At Richard Neutra’s Corwin House in Weston, Connecticut, a restoration brought back the large, landscape-facing glass opening that had been replaced with smaller windows—while using insulated sliding panels instead of reinstating the original single-pane glazing. The result aims to recover Neutra’s visual connection between the house and its wooded river setting without restoring the heat and cold transfer that made the original glazing uncomfortable.
The construction date is reported differently: the Neutra Institute lists 1955, while Sky-Frame says Neutra completed the house in 1956. Both accounts place the project in the mid-1950s.

What is the Corwin House, and where is it?
The house sits on wooded terrain above the Saugatuck River in Weston, Connecticut, oriented toward a river view and a large rock on the site. Sky-Frame describes it as one of only three houses Richard Neutra built in Connecticut. The Neutra Institute’s record describes a composition of brick, glass, tongue-and-groove redwood and dark slate flagstone.
Inside, a two-story foyer leads to a living room shaped by strong horizontal planes, ash cabinetry and a fireplace. The design was worked out through an exchange of letters between Neutra and client Henry Corwin; according to the Neutra Institute, they debated the living room’s footprint in relation to the wooded, rocky landscape.

Why were the original windows changed?
The expansive original glazing helped connect the living space to the landscape, but its single-pane glass admitted excessive heat and cold. In the 1980s, the Corwins replaced the large glazed surface with smaller windows. That improved comfort but broke the broad view into smaller openings, changing the relationship between the interior and the site.

How did the restoration recover Neutra’s design intent?
Owner Aziz Osko treated the work as stewardship rather than an effort to reproduce every 1950s construction detail. Before intervening, he spent a year observing how daylight changed through the seasons, reviewed original drawings and documents the Corwin family had left at the house, and—with help from the Neutra Foundation—consulted the original specification book in UCLA archives.

Osko described the owners’ role this way: “We see ourselves more as custodians of this house, not simply as the ones who hold the key.” He also said of Neutra, “He listened to people and wanted to improve their lives,” and, “The way Neutra designed the house is beautifully balanced, almost like an ecosystem. Everything is connected.”
Why was Sky-Frame Classic used for the large opening?
The restoration needed to address two different problems: the smaller replacement windows had fragmented the view, while the original single glazing had performed poorly for comfort. Sky-Frame Classic let the project retain a large sliding-glass opening without simply putting the original single-pane assembly back.
Sky-Frame’s technical reference describes floor-to-ceiling sliding glass, vertical profiles of approximately 20 millimeters, insulated glazing and full thermal separation. Those features explain the design choice: a narrow-profile system can visually recede while insulated, thermally separated construction addresses the heat-transfer problem identified in the earlier glazing. They do not, by themselves, establish the finished house’s energy use or quantify the comfort improvement.

What can this restoration teach owners of modernist houses?
The Corwin House illustrates a useful distinction: preserving a historic design does not always mean repeating its original materials or technical limitations. Here, the project retained the large opening and landscape connection while changing the glazing system, and used archival evidence to guide other details. The aim was fidelity to the house’s spatial intent, not a literal recreation of every original condition.
For a similar project, the sequence matters. First understand how the building works across changing light and seasons; then compare surviving fabric with original drawings and specifications; finally, decide which features express the design’s intent and which can be updated to meet present-day needs. Osko called the work “a labour of love for us. I tried to complete a part of the work that Richard Neutra and his team had begun.”
The Neutra Institute cites Neutra: Complete Works by Barbara Lamprecht (Taschen, 2000) as the source for its Corwin House entry. It is an architectural reference, not a technical installation manual or a complete account of this restoration. Osko summed up the project’s place in the house’s history: “For us, it is a joy to be part of the next chapter of this house’s history,” says Aziz Osko.
