Michigan State University is renovating the Kellogg Center in two stages beginning in September 2026. Exterior work will repair and update the porte-cochere, signage and lighting first, followed by interior improvements to the State Room restaurant, lobby, corridors and selected meeting spaces through fall 2027. Visitors should expect intermittent sidewalk closures and possible temporary loss of the main entrance during the exterior phase; the hotel says its parking-ramp entrance is expected to remain accessible.
What is being renovated at the Kellogg Center?
The project modernizes both the building’s arrival area and key public interiors. Michigan State’s Infrastructure Planning and Facilities department says the work was consolidated from four separate projects into a coordinated upgrade intended to bring the center’s appearance into closer alignment with nearby 1855 Place, the Student Recreation and Wellness Center and Munn Ice Arena.

Exterior work comes first
The first phase addresses failing downspouts and canopy roofing at the porte-cochere—the covered entry where guests and luggage are dropped off. Crews will also replace or update canopy signage to current MSU standards and install exterior lighting. These changes affect the building’s most visible arrival point rather than adding a new wing or changing the center’s overall use.
Interior areas planned for renovation
The second phase is planned for the State Room restaurant, lobby, corridors and some meeting and conference rooms. The published project description does not identify every room, finish, fixture or technology that will change, so those details should not be assumed from concept images or existing gallery photographs.

When will the Kellogg Center work be finished?
MSU’s project schedule lists construction beginning in September 2026 and substantial completion in fall 2027. It divides the work into an exterior phase followed by an interior phase, but does not provide a more precise final date for each room or operation.

These are planned dates, not a guarantee of conditions on a particular day. Construction sequencing, weather and campus operations can change access or completion timing.
How will construction affect visitors?
MSU says sidewalks on Harrison Road may close intermittently on weekdays from September 28 through December 18, 2026. The same notice warns that the main entrance may be temporarily unavailable while exterior work is underway.

Use the parking-ramp entrance if directed
The Kellogg Hotel & Conference Center’s visitor notice says the parking-ramp entrance is expected to remain open and accessible. Guests should follow on-site signs rather than assume the usual porte-cochere route is available, allow extra time for a detour and confirm current directions before traveling to campus.
What the notices do not establish
The published schedule does not promise uninterrupted access to every sidewalk, restaurant area or event room, and it does not announce a blanket closure of hotel or conference services. Anyone attending a meeting, dining reservation or overnight stay should check directly with the center for conditions on the relevant date.
What do the available photos show?
The center’s official photo gallery includes images of the entrance, guestrooms, the State Room restaurant, patios and meeting spaces. The gallery does not date the images or label them as before-and-after or construction-progress photographs.

Those pictures are useful for understanding the facility’s layout and existing appearance, but they cannot establish that a renovation is complete. A caption should identify a gallery image as an undated official photograph unless its date and construction status have been independently confirmed. New progress photos would need a clear shoot date and location to support a before-and-after comparison.
Why is the Kellogg Center important to MSU?
MSU says the center was dedicated on September 17, 1951. It was originally developed to house and feed guests attending educational conferences and meetings. Today it combines hotel lodging, restaurant service, event and conference space, and hands-on hospitality experience for students.
The Kellogg Foundation provided a $1.4 million grant in 1951 to support the center’s development, according to the facility’s official history. That historical figure is separate from the current renovation: MSU has not published a project budget or a current attendance statistic on the cited project and history pages.
