Turn unwanted jeans into a lined storage bin with a denim exterior, batting for body, and a fabric lining. Betz White’s Make: tutorial gives patterns for three sizes and allows you to adjust the dimensions for what you want to store.
Choose a bin size
The measurements below are the tutorial’s finished dimensions. Its cutting measurements are pattern instructions; use them as given rather than treating them as a mathematical recalculation of the finished bin.
| Size | Finished height | Finished diameter | Denim leg pieces | Side-panel pattern | Bottom circle |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Large | 10 inches | 10 inches | Two pieces about 15 inches long | 16 inches across top, 14 inches across bottom, 14 inches tall | 9 inches in diameter |
| Medium | 9 inches | 8 inches | Two pieces about 14 inches long | 14 inches across top, 12 inches across bottom, 13 inches tall | 7 inches in diameter |
| Small | 8 inches | 6 inches | One piece from a 12-inch leg section | 16 inches across top, 14 inches across bottom, 11 inches tall | 5.5 inches in diameter |
Consider the contents and the fabric you have on hand when choosing. Yarn, magazines, craft supplies, and small toys are examples of things the tutorial suggests gathering in the bins. It does not give a load rating or claim that one size is sturdier than another.
Gather materials and tools
The tutorial’s supply quantities are for the large bin; smaller versions may use less. Check your fabric stash before buying anything.
#1 Best Overall
- This set of 2 storage boxes, made of a durable cotton blend construction, are the perfect closed storage option to corral office supplies, toys, accessories, and more
- Each storage cube provides ample space for folded clothes, bags, shoes, office supplies, and other frequently used items
- Integrated grommet handles makes moving these organizers a breeze, and they can be easily collapsed for space-saving storage when not in use
- Made from polylinen and cardboard
- Each box measures 11.5 inches L x 11.5 inches W x 11 inches H
- One pair of jeans
- 1/2 yard of lining fabric, such as lightweight cotton or mid-weight twill or canvas
- 1/2 yard of interfacing if the lining fabric is lightweight
- 1/2 yard of quilt batting
- 1 yard of rickrack, ball fringe, or other trim
- A heavy-duty sewing machine needle intended for denim
- A fabric marking tool, ruler, fabric shears, and iron
Batting adds a layer between the denim and lining. Interfacing is specified for lightweight lining fabric, not as a required addition for every lining. The tutorial does not name a needle brand or model.
Cut the denim, lining, and batting
- Select jean legs with enough usable fabric for the chosen pattern. Cut the leg section or sections to the lengths listed above. Open each leg along the inseam. You can keep a decorative flat-felled seam as a visible detail.
- Remove the original hem and square the bottom edge. Mark and cut the side-panel trapezoids to the pattern measurements for your chosen size.
- Use the denim panels as templates for the lining and batting side panels. Add interfacing to the lining pieces if you are using lightweight fabric.
- Cut matching circles for the base from lining, batting, and leftover denim. If one denim scrap is too small for the circle, the tutorial notes that you can join two smaller scraps.
Sew the bin shells
- Sew the angled side seams for the denim pieces and for the lining-and-batting pieces, using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Press the seam allowances open. For the small bin, fold the single piece to form each outer and lining assembly rather than joining two separate side panels.
- Match the base circles to their corresponding sides, aligning seam and fold marks. Sew each base in place with a 1/2-inch seam allowance, then trim the allowances to 1/8 inch.
- Pin trim around the top edge of the denim shell and sew it 1/8 inch from the edge.
- Place the denim shell inside the lining-and-batting shell with right sides together. Align the top edges and side seams, then sew around the top using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Leave a 4–5-inch opening for turning. Trim the seam allowances to 1/8 inch except at the opening.
- Turn the bin right side out through the opening and tuck the lining inside. Press the top edge, checking that the trim can tolerate the iron’s heat. Close the turning opening and topstitch around the top 1/8 inch from the edge.
The top edge can be rolled down to show the lining. For the full project instructions and illustrations, see Betz White’s “Denim Do-it-All Bins” at Make:, published April 25, 2011; the page also displays May 22, 2015.
