For a gas stove, the best range hood is usually a correctly sized, quiet-enough hood that captures cooking emissions and vents them directly outdoors. Choose by capture performance, rated airflow and sound, duct compatibility, and combustion safety—not by the largest CFM number alone. What kind of range hood is best for a gas stove?
Choose a ducted hood that exhausts outdoors. A recirculating model passes air through filters and returns it to the kitchen; it does not send exhaust outside. For a gas range, the EPA says the hood should capture combustion products and vent them directly outdoors. If your kitchen has no suitable duct route, ask a qualified installer about options rather than treating recirculation as equivalent. EPA remodeling guidance
What to compare when choosing a hood
- Capture efficiency: How well the hood captures emissions at the cooking surface matters alongside its airflow rating.
- Airflow and sound: Look for credible ratings at the tested operating point, including a setting you are likely to use every day.
- Duct compatibility: Confirm duct diameter, route, elbows, and exterior termination against the specific hood’s installation documentation.
- Usability: Consider controls, lighting, access to grease filters, and how easily the unit can be cleaned.
- Combustion safety: Consider how the exhaust fan may affect home pressure, especially if the home has other natural-draft combustion appliances.
How many CFM do you need?
There is no single CFM figure that establishes the right hood for every gas range and home. EPA cites 100 cubic feet per minute (CFM) as guidance for a typical range, attributing that recommendation to ASHRAE and HVI. It is not presented as a universal code minimum or a model-specific sizing formula. The duct system and home configuration affect what a fan can deliver once installed. EPA remodeling guidance
Compare airflow ratings under a stated test method and pressure, not just a manufacturer’s maximum setting. EPA Indoor AirPlus Version 2 recommends HVI 920-equivalent airflow and sound ratings and specifies airflow ratings at a minimum static pressure of 0.375 inches water column (in. WC). Why more airflow is not always better
A high-capacity fan can pull substantial air out of a home. If replacement air cannot enter adequately, the resulting pressure change may contribute to backdrafting from combustion appliances. Larger fans can also require makeup air. Before selecting or installing a high-flow system, have a qualified professional assess the installation and any other natural-draft appliances in the home. Check capture efficiency and everyday noise
Airflow describes how much air a fan moves under specified test conditions; capture efficiency describes how effectively the hood captures emissions at the cooking surface. A large airflow figure alone does not establish strong capture in your kitchen. EPA Indoor AirPlus Version 2 recommends a minimum capture efficiency of 70% for range hoods and microwave-range hoods, tested under ASTM E3087 or an equivalent method. Noise matters because a hood that is unpleasant to run may be used less often. EPA’s Indoor AirPlus guidance recommends no more than 2 sones at an airflow setting of at least 100 CFM for demand-controlled kitchen exhaust. Make sure the duct will work in your home
A hood’s rated airflow does not guarantee the same performance after installation. Duct length, diameter, bends, and the exterior termination all influence the system. Follow the hood manufacturer’s duct requirements, use the prescribed sizing guidance, and choose a compatible, certified termination fitting. Have an installer assess the route before buying if the duct path is long, has multiple elbows, or needs to be created through finished construction. Use and maintain the hood effectively
- Turn the hood on while cooking so it can capture emissions as they are produced.
- Use the back burners when practical; they are more likely to be within the hood’s capture area.
- Keep the hood running for 10–20 minutes after cooking, as recommended in EPA cooking guidance.
- Clean the grease filter routinely, following the manufacturer’s instructions, and replace filters only with compatible parts.

Opening doors or windows when it is safe and outdoor air is suitable, and using an appropriately sized portable air cleaner that does not produce ozone, can be supplemental steps. They are not equivalent to a hood that captures gas-range combustion products and exhausts them outdoors. If you are planning a kitchen remodel, ask an installer whether a safe outdoor duct route can be added. EPA cooking infographic
