New Atlas’s 2024 roundup selected ten tiny-house projects for their unusual designs—not as a ranked list or a tested guide to what buyers should build. The examples range from a tracked truck conversion and a shipping-container home to compact towables and a retired wind-turbine nacelle. Together, they show how varied the term “tiny house” can be, and what each design gains or gives up in its use of space.

What “best” means in this roundup

Adam Williams’s New Atlas article, published December 26, 2024, calls these projects notable designs rather than winners in a comparative test. It is not strict about what counts as a tiny house, and it does not focus on practical suitability. The list is unranked: its value is the range of construction ideas, layouts and conversions on display.

The dimensions, capacities and prices below are figures New Atlas reported in 2024; they are not independently verified measurements or current quotes. The article does not establish present-day availability, code compliance, structural performance, warranties or permission to occupy or transport a particular build. Those questions depend on the specific design and location.

Ten tiny-house designs, from micro-builds to adaptive reuse

Rubishack by Rubitracks: a tracked truck conversion

Rubishack is a 16-foot-long, 7-foot-wide motorized build on a heavily modified truck base. It uses a first-generation Cummins engine and four bolt-on off-road tracks, putting it closer to a motorhome than a conventional tiny house. The interior is simple, with a double bed and swiveling seats salvaged from a 1970s motorhome. Rubitracks created it as a promotional vehicle, not as a model it planned to sell.

Levi Kelly’s unnamed micro-home: a 19.46-square-foot footprint

The smallest example in the roundup measures 19.46 square feet (1.8 square meters), according to New Atlas. Its essentials include a storage sofa, a small mezzanine sleeping area, a sink and a portable camping-style stove. It has no indoor bathroom: the shower is outside, and a camping-style toilet is stored in an external box.

New Atlas reported a build cost of about US$5,000. That was Kelly’s account of this particular project, with important context: he already owned the trailer and did the work himself. It should not be treated as a typical tiny-home budget.

Cargo by Madeiguincho: a container home with a roof terrace

Built in Lagos, Portugal, Cargo uses a shipping container as its base. New Atlas gives its approximate footprint as 20 by 8 feet (6 by 2.5 meters). The wood-finished interior fits a raised bed with storage, an L-shaped seating area, a kitchen and a small bathroom. Above, a rooftop terrace has a large overhang.

Bonzai by Baluchon: a compact, adaptable interior

Bonzai is a 15-foot-long (4.5-meter) home on a double-axle trailer, clad in red cedar and topped with an aluminum roof. The bathroom sits near the entrance and connects to the kitchen. A shoji-style sliding door separates those service areas from a multipurpose living room, which accommodates a dining table, home-cinema setup and roll-up bed.

Loft Ruby Edition by Mint Tiny House Company: three bedrooms in 34 feet

The 34-foot (10.36-meter) Loft Ruby Edition is reported to sleep six across three bedrooms. The main bedroom is downstairs; two upstairs loft bedrooms have low ceilings. The arrangement prioritizes sleeping capacity in a towable home, while making the lofts less like full-height rooms.

Element is a 16-foot-long (4.8-meter) model with a plywood interior, basic kitchen, compact bathroom and loft bedroom reached by ladder. New Atlas reported a price below US$25,000 when its article appeared in December 2024. That is a historical publication figure, not a current quote.

MO.CA by IAAC: a movable, off-grid concept

MO.CA, short for Mobile Catalyst, is a 17.8-foot-long (5.4-meter) design by the Institute for Advanced Architecture in Catalonia. It is built mainly from wood, with fabric-lined walls that can be raised using a manual pulley system. New Atlas describes this project with solar panels and a battery bank, a composting toilet, greywater recycling and a filter for drawing water from rivers. These are reported features of this design, not evidence of its long-term performance or suitability for other sites.

Vattenfall and Superuse Studios: a home inside a retired turbine nacelle

This adaptive-reuse project turns the nacelle—the housing at the top of a wind turbine—into a home. New Atlas reports that the nacelle came from a Vestas V80 2-megawatt turbine that had operated for 20 years at a wind farm in Austria. The resulting dwelling has about 376 square feet (35 square meters) of floor area. It is a one-off reuse project in the roundup, not evidence of a standardized or widely available housing product.

What these designs reveal about tiny-house trade-offs

  • “Tiny house” can describe very different things. This selection includes towable homes, a container conversion, a tracked motor vehicle and an adaptive-reuse project.
  • Less floor area can mean fewer conventional amenities. Kelly’s 19.46-square-foot micro-home has no interior bathroom, while using outdoor facilities and external storage instead.
  • More length can support separation and sleeping capacity. The 34-foot Loft Ruby Edition reports three bedrooms and six sleepers; the 45-foot Pisgah Park Model separates living and sleeping areas with a porch.
  • Off-grid features and reused structures raise project-specific questions. The roundup describes MO.CA’s systems and the nacelle conversion, but does not establish their cost, long-term performance, permitting or suitability for general use.

What to verify before treating an idea as a build plan

A visual idea is not a construction specification. Anyone considering a similar project would need to establish details the 2024 roundup does not provide, including usable floor area, road and transport requirements, structure, current cost, included systems, and the rules for occupying the home at its intended site.

  • Local permitting, transport legality, insurance and site requirements.

These are location- and project-specific checks; the roundup does not answer them. Its designs are best used as inspiration for space planning and construction approaches, not as evidence that a particular build is available, code-compliant or ready to occupy.
