This adaptable plan uses a 4 × 8-foot ground-level bed as its example, with walls made from 2 × 12 lumber. The finished frame is 2 feet tall; its soil capacity depends on the actual inside dimensions and how high you fill it. Start by checking access, sun, slope, and what lies beneath the bed, then adjust the cut list to fit your site and the lumber you can buy.

What is a good size for a raised bed planter?

Choose the width for comfortable reach, not appearance alone. Iowa State University Extension recommends keeping a bed reachable from one side to about 1.5–2 feet wide. If you can reach it from both sides, 3–4 feet is a practical width range. An 8-foot length is easy to build from standard 8-foot boards, but a shorter or longer bed may suit your space better.

  • Check access: Leave room to walk along the sides you need to reach. Avoid making the bed so wide that you have to step into it to plant or weed.
  • Check the site: A sunny, level location near a water source makes planting and upkeep easier. Most vegetables and flowers need at least six hours of full sun for peak performance, according to Iowa State University Extension.
  • Reduce waste: Plan around available board lengths. The University of Georgia Extension advises considering access, slope, and materials when choosing dimensions; using common lumber lengths can reduce offcuts.
  • Account for slope: Level the frame. On a slope, orient the bed’s shortest dimension perpendicular to the slope, like steps, following University of Georgia Extension guidance.

How deep should a raised garden bed be?

Match soil depth to the crop and what is below the bed. The University of Georgia Extension says most garden crops need at least 10 inches of soil. A bed over loosened native ground can let roots continue downward, so the entire root zone does not have to be contained by the frame. Over concrete or another hard surface, provide adequate soil depth for the crops and a reliable route for excess water to drain.

The example frame uses 2 × 12 boards, which are nominally 12 inches wide; the actual board width and resulting inside dimensions depend on the lumber. If you stack boards for a taller wall, account for the added soil weight and reinforce the structure accordingly. Taller beds also need more fill. For wheelchair access, the Georgia guidance suggests a 24-inch height; a bed 36 inches off the ground can reduce bending. Set the height to the gardener’s reach and ensure the support structure can carry the load.

Materials and cut list for the 4 × 8-foot example

The University of Delaware Cooperative Extension handout specifies the following for its 4 × 8 × 2-foot example. It is a source plan, not a universal cut list: confirm the desired finished dimensions and actual board sizes before cutting.

Material Quantity Use or note
2 × 12 × 8-foot boards 4 Long sides; cedar or pressure-treated wood in the handout
2 × 12 × 4-foot boards 4 End boards; cedar or pressure-treated wood in the handout
1.5 × 1.5 × 2-foot braces 6 Corner and side reinforcement
1 × 4 × 6-foot boards 2 Optional side seats
Coated 2.5-inch screws 32 Use outdoor-suitable fasteners
Coated 3.5-inch screws 24 Use outdoor-suitable fasteners
Drill bit As needed Only if the chosen screws are not self-tapping

The handout lists fill materials as 1.5 yards of topsoil (40 cubic feet), 0.7 yards of compost (20 cubic feet), and 0.4 yards of peat moss (4 cubic feet), with perlite or vermiculite offered as a substitute for peat moss. Those yard-to-cubic-foot figures do not all convert consistently, so do not use the list as a verified order quantity. Calculate the bed’s volume from its measured interior dimensions and intended fill depth instead.

How do I construct a raised bed?

  1. Lay out the footprint. Mark the bed where it will sit and confirm that you can reach the planting area and access water. For the example, the plan calls for 8-foot sides and 4-foot ends; check how your chosen board layout affects the actual outside and inside dimensions.
  2. Cut and arrange the lumber. Cut the boards to the dimensions required by your layout. Pair the long boards to form each side, and prepare the end boards and six braces listed above.
  3. Build and reinforce the sides. The Delaware sequence braces pairs of 8-foot boards to form the long sides, then attaches the 4-foot end boards. Secure the walls against outward movement and reinforce the corners. The Georgia Extension guide says one-inch lumber needs a vertical support about every four feet; that guidance is specific to thinner lumber, so determine suitable reinforcement for the thickness, height, and loads of your own build.
  4. Set the frame in place and level it. Check level before filling. On sloping ground, adjust the site or frame rather than leaving the bed tilted.
  5. Add optional seats, if wanted. The Delaware example lists two 1 × 4 × 6-foot boards for side seats. Fit them to your layout and fasten them securely; do not treat them as structural bracing unless designed for that purpose.
  6. Fill after checking volume and drainage. Use a soil mix suited to your site and crops. Leave a little room at the top for watering and settling instead of filling to the rim.

Choose materials and decide whether the bed needs a bottom

Cedar and redwood resist decay and are commonly used for garden-bed walls. Other possible materials include composite lumber, PVC boards, metal, masonry, rock, or brick. Select materials intended for outdoor use and suitable for contact with the surrounding soil. Iowa State cautions that some treated wood and galvanized metal may require care to reduce potential contaminant exposure; treatment and product details matter, so neither all treated products nor all metal should be treated as automatically safe or unsafe.

A ground-level frame is often bottomless, allowing roots to reach native soil and water to drain into the ground. If you place a bottom on an elevated tabletop planter, drainage becomes part of the design. Iowa State’s tabletop guidance specifies 1/2-inch drainage holes every 6 inches across the base and a water-permeable fabric liner to hold soil while letting water escape. Those directions apply to that elevated design, not to every ground-level bed.

Calculate soil volume and choose a mix

Measure the finished frame’s inside length and width, then multiply those measurements by the fill depth. Use one unit throughout; for feet, the result is cubic feet.

Interior length × interior width × fill depth = soil volume.

For example, if a measured bed has an interior footprint of 7.5 × 3.5 feet and you fill it 1 foot deep, it takes 26.25 cubic feet before allowing for settling. This is only an illustration: calculate from your own inside measurements, not the nominal outside size. Order somewhat more than the calculated volume if settling or uneven ground will reduce the finished level, but do not assume that the Delaware handout’s inconsistent conversions represent the volume for your build.

There is no single mandatory recipe for every location. Iowa State describes equal parts topsoil, organic matter, and coarse sand, or roughly 70% topsoil and 30% compost. Utah State describes a one-to-one-to-one blend of composted organic matter, drainage material, and topsoil or native soil. Test the soil where appropriate and adapt the ingredients to local conditions, crop needs, and the quality of available materials. Aim for a light, well-drained mix rather than compacted garden soil alone.

Plan watering and seasonal care

Raised beds warm earlier in spring than in-ground gardens, but they can dry out faster, especially in warm or dry weather. Put the bed within reach of a hose or another dependable water source. Check soil moisture regularly and water as needed; drip or trickle irrigation is a practical option for beds, as noted by Utah State University Extension.

How the plan changes for other sizes and tabletop planters

Changing the footprint

Keep the reach limits in mind when changing width, and choose lengths that use available lumber efficiently. Recalculate the inside dimensions, soil volume, brace placement, and fastener needs. A longer wall or a taller bed places greater demands on its connections and supports; do not assume the example’s six braces are enough for every alteration.

Building an elevated tabletop planter

A tabletop design is a different structure from a ground-level frame: it needs a supported base, adequate leg and joint strength for wet soil, and drainage holes. Use the Iowa State tabletop spacing of 1/2-inch holes every 6 inches across the base with a permeable liner as guidance for that style. Determine the planting depth from the crops and the gardener’s reach, and design the stand for the filled planter’s weight. The Delaware 4 × 8-foot cut list is not a tabletop plan.

Making a bed accessible

Set the bed height and width around the person who will tend it. Georgia Extension’s 24-inch height suggestion for wheelchair access and 36-inch height suggestion to reduce bending are starting points, not guarantees of fit. Confirm that the gardener can reach the planting area from the intended approach, and reinforce taller walls and their supports for the added soil load.
