How Anteneh Gashaw’s Rainwater-Storing Gojo Is Designed to Work

Anteneh Gashaw’s concept turns part of a Gojo’s surrounding frame into rainwater storage. Its reported 3,000-liter capacity is an estimate, not a verified test result.

Anteneh Gashaw’s rainwater-storing Gojo adapts the surrounding structure of a traditional Ethiopian dwelling into interconnected pipes that collect and hold roof runoff. The project author estimates that one client’s design could store about 3,000 liters when full, but the available project descriptions do not establish that capacity through independent testing.

How the rainwater-storing Gojo is intended to work

A Gojo is described in the project coverage as a traditional Ethiopian dwelling built around a central support and a surrounding frame. In Gashaw’s concept, parts of that surrounding structure become connected water-storage sections rather than serving only as building structure.

  1. Collect rain on the roof. A roof collector directs runoff toward the storage system.
  2. Route water into the frame. Fittings connect pipe sections incorporated into the Gojo’s surrounding structure.
  3. Store and draw water. The interconnected sections hold collected water, which can be drawn through an outlet near the bottom.

The descriptions explain this overall route, but do not provide a complete construction specification. They do not establish pipe material or dimensions, fitting details, roof-to-pipe connections, or a method for integrating water-filled pipes safely with the dwelling’s frame. The Appropedia project entry and Hackaday.io project page describe the concept; neither is a build-ready engineering plan.

What the 3,000-liter estimate means

Gashaw’s Appropedia project entry says: “At current design of the modified Gojo for one client, it is estimated to store about 3,000 liters of rain water at full capacity which is very good amount.” This is the project author’s estimate for a design for one client, not a measured or independently verified capacity. The entry does not give a measurement protocol or test results.

RTS Home Accents 50-Gallon ECO Rain Barrel Made with 100% Recycled Plastic, Flat Back Rain Water Collection Barrel, Black
  • 50-Gallon Capacity: Provides ample storage for harvested rainwater, ideal for watering gardens, lawns, and plants.
  • Durable Construction: Made from UV-resistant polyethylene for long-lasting durability and protection from the elements. Made of 100% Recycled plastic.
  • Overflow Valve: Built-in overflow valve for managing excess water and the option to connect multiple barrels for increased storage.
  • Convenient Spigot: Easy-to-use plastic spigot for quick and efficient water retrieval.
  • Low Maintenance: Easy to install and maintain, offering a simple, sustainable solution for homeowners.

Actual storage would depend on the dimensions and arrangement of the storage sections and on how much roof runoff reaches them. The project descriptions do not provide enough specifications to calculate a capacity for other Gojo designs.

Are the claimed wind and fire benefits established?

The inventor’s description proposes that water held in the surrounding pipes would add weight and might improve the dwelling’s stability in high winds. It also suggests the stored water could be useful during a fire. These are design rationales, not demonstrated safety outcomes: the available descriptions report no independent structural assessment, wind testing, or evaluation of fire performance.

Water storage built into a frame also raises practical engineering questions: how the added weight is carried, how connections behave under movement, and how the system can be inspected and maintained. The project descriptions do not answer those questions, so the concept should not be treated as evidence that a modified dwelling is safer or fire-resistant.

What remains to be specified before construction

The project pages do not establish a complete design for construction or document independent performance testing. In particular, they leave these items open:

  • EASY TO USE: 2 16" Manway lids on the water tank give flexibility for top-down plumbing, filtrated catchment, and access; 1.5" fitting at highest point for optimized fill, 2" fittings at lowest point for maximum drainage; Air bleeds allow for max fill
  • SAFE FOR DRINKING WATER: UV-resistant HDPE protects against the sun; Dark-colored tank will obstruct light from entering for pure, safe drinking water; Made from virgin polyethylene and compliant with FDA and NSF/ANSI 61 standards
  • DURABLE WATER COLLECTION: Banded body and reinforced top make this tough water barrel sturdy and ready for a long service life; Built-in gallon indicators provide easy fill level identification; Rotomolded build is resistant to rust, chips, and cracks
  • DELIVERY AND INSTALL: Tank is delivered via freight and may not fit in garage or through small gates; Recommended to sit on reinforced concrete block or pad for stability; Diameter: 72", Height: 94"
  • Materials and dimensions: no pipe material, diameter, wall specification, or fitting standard is specified.
  • Structural design: no load calculations or validation of the modified frame are reported.
  • Water quality: no treatment, testing, or suitability for drinking is established. Collected rainwater should not be assumed potable based on the storage concept alone.
  • Installation and upkeep: the descriptions do not give a complete build sequence or maintenance requirements.
  • Deployment: the available pages do not establish broad adoption or performance across multiple dwellings.

These gaps matter because the concept combines two jobs—supporting a dwelling and storing water. A construction plan would need to address both, as well as collection, access, maintenance, and the intended use of the water.

How it compares with conventional rainwater storage

The project descriptions mention large tanks and underground storage as conventional alternatives but supply no comparable prices, capacities, lifecycle costs, or performance data. The Gojo concept therefore cannot be judged cheaper, safer, or more effective on the available figures. A fair comparison would require project-specific information about capacity, installation, maintenance, structural effects, water treatment, and cost for each option.
