A full freezer with its door kept closed can hold a safe temperature for approximately 48 hours; a half-full freezer, approximately 24 hours. Those are estimates, not guarantees. After power returns, use a thermometer if available and assess food individually. Food that still has ice crystals or is at or below 40°F (4°C) can generally be refrozen or cooked, but the safe choice depends on the food. Never taste food to decide whether it is safe.
How long will a freezer stay safe without power?
According to FoodSafety.gov’s outage chart, reviewed August 8, 2024, a full freezer holds a safe temperature for approximately 48 hours, and a half-full freezer for approximately 24 hours, provided the door remains closed. Opening the door lets cold air escape, so keep it shut as much as possible during the outage.
These times are approximate. They do not prove that every item is safe once the stated period has passed—or unsafe before it. Actual food temperature, remaining ice crystals, time spent above 40°F (4°C), and food type all matter.
How to decide what to keep after power returns
Check temperature and ice crystals
If you have a freezer thermometer, check the temperature. Food that is still at or below 40°F (4°C), or still contains ice crystals, can generally be refrozen or cooked, although refreezing may reduce quality. If you did not have a thermometer in the freezer, inspect packages individually and use the official food-specific chart rather than assuming the freezer stayed cold based only on elapsed time.
#1 Best Overall

Do not rely on smell or appearance alone, and never taste food to test its safety. FoodSafety.gov’s power-outage chart distinguishes food that still has ice crystals and feels cold as if refrigerated from food exposed to 40°F (4°C) or above for more than two hours.
Use the food-specific guidance
There is no single rule that fits everything in a freezer. The chart lists meat, poultry, seafood, soups and stews, many dairy products, casseroles, and frozen meals among foods to discard when they have been above 40°F (4°C) for more than two hours. It also gives exceptions: hard cheese and some breads and pastries may be refrozen under the chart’s conditions; fruit products may be refrozen with spoilage signs as a caveat; and some vegetable products have a six-hour threshold above 40°F (4°C). Check the chart for the exact food and its stated conditions.

- Measuring range:-20~80℉
- Material type:Stainless steel
- Installation mode:Wide base and integrated hook allow it to be placed anywhere in the refrigerator
- Easy to read
- Great quality
One notable exception: discard ice cream and frozen yogurt if thawed. A general rule about refreezing food with ice crystals does not override the chart’s instructions for specific items.
What to do during a prolonged outage
- Keep freezer and refrigerator doors closed. Open them only when necessary.
- Move food to a cooler if needed. Use ice or frozen gel packs and keep the cooler at or below 40°F (4°C). Continue to assess the food by temperature and the food-specific chart.
- Use dry ice only with care. FoodSafety.gov gives 50 pounds of dry ice as an example for holding an 18-cubic-foot freezer for two days. Do not handle dry ice with bare hands or put it directly against food. See FoodSafety.gov’s outage guidance for details.
How to prepare before the next outage
- Keep appliance thermometers in the refrigerator and freezer so you can assess temperatures after an outage. FoodSafety.gov recommends setting the freezer to 0°F (-18°C) or below.
- Freeze gel packs or containers of water ahead of time, and group food together in the freezer.
- Keep a cooler available if an outage may last more than four hours.
- Plan ahead for ice or dry ice if an extended outage is possible, and follow safe handling guidance.
These measures help preserve cold, but they do not guarantee food is safe. Use temperature, ice crystals, elapsed time above 40°F (4°C), and the food-specific chart to make the final decision.
