Yes, Power Mole is a real product. Made by Acqua Industries, it transfers low-voltage power across a window or other nonmetallic barrier using magnetic induction. The indoor unit plugs into a wall outlet, while the outdoor unit provides power through USB or another 5-volt connection.
That makes it useful for some cameras, lights, and sensors without drilling through a wall or leaving a window open. It does not replace an outdoor electrical receptacle and cannot run high-power equipment.

What Power Mole is
Power Mole is a two-part wireless power bridge:
- An indoor transmitter is mounted against the inside of a fixed window section.
- An outdoor receiver is mounted directly opposite it.
- The transmitter connects to an indoor electrical outlet.
- The receiver supplies low-voltage power to an outdoor USB device.
The two units must be aligned across the barrier. The system is intended to avoid drilling, extension cables through a window gap, or installing an exterior outlet.

How it transmits power through glass
Electricity does not flow through the glass as though the window were a wire. Instead, Power Mole uses short-range magnetic induction, broadly similar to the principle used by wireless phone chargers.
Alternating current in the indoor transmitter coil creates a magnetic field. That field crosses the nonmetallic barrier and induces current in the receiver coil. The receiver converts that energy into direct current for the connected device.
The manufacturer also describes use through wood, plastic, and other nonmetallic materials. Metal frames, screens, films, or other conductive components may interfere with transfer.
Indoor outlet → transmitter coil | glass or other nonmetallic barrier | receiver coil → USB device

Power output: the important qualification
The current product is advertised as providing up to 11 watts, but the maximum depends on the distance between the two units.
| Specification | Current claim or guidance |
|---|---|
| Maximum advertised output | Up to 11 watts |
| Full-output range | Approximately 32 mm, according to the official setup information |
| Maximum advertised barrier | Up to 36 mm (about 1.4 inches) |
| Output at the maximum gap | 5 watts, according to the official setup information |
| Output type | Low-voltage 5-volt/USB equipment |
| Indoor outlet distance | Up to approximately 9 feet (2.75 metres), according to installation guidance |
Do not read “11 watts through 36 mm” as a guaranteed specification. The manufacturer’s instructions distinguish between the shorter distance for 11 watts and the longer distance for 5 watts. Older articles describe an earlier model rated at 10 watts through up to 30 mm, so those figures should not be mixed with the current product claims.
What it can power
Power Mole may suit devices such as:
- USB security cameras;
- small outdoor or decorative USB lights;
- low-power sensors;
- some smart-home devices accepting regulated 5-volt power.
USB alone does not guarantee compatibility. Before installation, check the device’s required voltage, wattage, connector, polarity, cable length, and startup demand. A camera that boots during the day may draw more power when infrared night vision, a heater, or another high-power mode activates.

Do not connect equipment requiring 9, 12, 19, or 24 volts unless a specifically compatible conversion arrangement is supported. A passive plug adapter does not change voltage, current capacity, polarity, or the device’s startup requirements.
Double glazing, triple glazing, and Low-E glass
The relevant measurement is the complete transmitter-to-receiver separation—not simply the thickness of one pane. Measure both panes, the air space between them, coatings, spacers, films, recessed surfaces, and any uneven mounting distance.
Acqua Industries says the product works through windows up to 36 mm, including Low-E windows. That remains a manufacturer claim rather than an independent guarantee for every Low-E coating or window assembly. Test the exact installation location before permanently mounting the units.

Installation procedure
- Confirm that the outdoor device works with its original power adapter.
- Select a fixed part of the window, not a sliding or opening section.
- Make sure no window screen lies between the two units.
- Confirm that an indoor outlet is within approximately 9 feet of the window.
- Check that the indoor and outdoor cables will reach their intended locations.
- Clean the glass thoroughly.
- Attach the receiver to the outside of the glass.
- Connect the outdoor USB device, using an appropriate adapter or extension only if the electrical specifications remain compatible.
- Attach the transmitter directly opposite the receiver on the inside.
- Plug the transmitter into the indoor outlet.
- Check the indicator and confirm that the outdoor device powers up.
- Only then finalize the camera, light, or sensor mounting position.
According to the manufacturer’s setup instructions, the transmitter briefly shows a red light while searching for the receiver. The light goes off when the receiver is found and power transfer begins.
Efficiency and practical trade-offs
Wireless transfer is convenient, but it is not as efficient as a direct cable. Earlier reporting cited approximately 50% efficiency for the original system at its maximum spacing and up to about 75% at very short spacing. Coverage of the newer V2 reported approximately 63% efficiency at 30 mm. These figures are product-specific reports, not a universal independent efficiency standard.
In practical terms, the indoor outlet may supply substantially more energy than the outdoor device receives. Losses vary with alignment, gap thickness, load demand, and operating conditions.
Other trade-offs include:
- Both pucks must remain aligned.
- The hardware and outdoor cable remain visible.
- Adhesive performance depends on clean, smooth surfaces, temperature, condensation, and weather exposure.
- The product still needs an indoor outlet.
- Long outdoor cable runs can introduce additional voltage drop and weatherproofing concerns.
- Accessible information does not independently verify current V2 output, thermal performance, long-term outdoor durability, or adhesive life in every climate.
Troubleshooting common failures
The device repeatedly disconnects
- Disconnect the outdoor load.
- Re-align the two pucks so they are directly opposite.
- Confirm they are attached to the fixed window section and directly against the glass.
- Check the total coil-to-coil gap.
- Test a low-power USB light or another known-good 5-volt load.
- Reconnect the intended device only after the low-power test succeeds.
Misalignment, excessive spacing, a screen or metal component, a shifted adhesive pad, unsuitable cabling, or excessive startup demand can all affect operation. Earlier product coverage also described the transmitter shutting down when it cannot establish a connection or detects an energy-absorbing metal object; treat that as a manufacturer-reported product behavior, not as independent certification.

The camera works by day but fails at night
Check its highest-power operating mode. Infrared illumination, heaters, or other night functions may push demand beyond what the receiver can reliably deliver.
The adhesive will not hold
Dust, condensation, textured glass, extreme temperatures, and unsuitable surfaces can reduce adhesion. The manufacturer recommends clean glass and firm pressure for at least 10 seconds to activate the 3M VHB adhesive. Outdoor weather exposure deserves particular attention before relying on the system to support expensive equipment.
Removing the unit
The adhesive is strong. The manufacturer recommends sliding a credit card or another thin, rigid plastic tool behind the unit and pushing through the adhesive rather than pulling the unit directly away from the glass.
Power Mole compared with alternatives
| Alternative | Best suited to | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Permanent outdoor receptacle | Higher-power or long-term installations | May require an electrician, permits, and more cost |
| Outdoor extension cable | Temporary, efficient wired power | Visible cable, weather sealing, security, and window-gap issues |
| Battery camera or light | Locations without a nearby outlet | Battery charging or replacement is required |
| Solar-powered device | Sunny locations where cable-free placement matters | Performance depends on sunlight, season, battery capacity, and night-time demand |
| Power over Ethernet | Suitable networked devices with a planned cable route | Requires Ethernet infrastructure and compatible hardware |
Is Power Mole worth buying?
It is a good fit when a renter or homeowner needs continuous power for a low-power 5-volt device located beside a window, cannot or does not want to drill through a wall, and can accept visible pucks and cabling.
It is a poor fit when the device needs more than 11 watts, requires a conventional AC outlet, sits behind a gap larger than the specification allows, has demanding weather exposure, or will be installed permanently where a properly wired outdoor receptacle is practical.
For a camera, verify the complete power requirement—including night operation—before purchase. For a permanent construction project, a code-compliant outdoor receptacle or a properly designed wired solution will generally be more conventional, efficient, and flexible.
