The robot behind the provocative headline is Moya, the Bionic Human, a highly lifelike humanoid platform developed by Shanghai-based DroidUp, also known as Shanghai Zhuoyide Robotics. It is designed to walk, look, move and interact more like a person than a conventional machine.
But Moya is not an established consumer home robot. There is no verified public U.S. ordering channel, official retail price, home-installation package or evidence that ordinary households can currently buy and safely operate one. The stronger evidence points to a prototype and commercial-service platform aimed first at institutional and business applications.

What is DroidUp’s Moya?
Moya is a biomimetic humanoid robot presented by DroidUp at Shanghai’s Zhangjiang Robotics Valley. Unlike industrial humanoids designed primarily for factories, warehouses or heavy lifting, Moya is built around social presence.

Its design combines a humanlike body with expressive facial features, eye tracking, soft exterior materials and a multimodal intelligent-agent system. DroidUp presents the broader platform as suitable for companionship, healthcare, reception, education, cultural performances and public-facing services.
#1 Best Overall
- Three models, one lightweight platform R1 Air (20 DOF, monocular camera), R1 (26 DOF, binocular camera, head+waist joints), and R1 Edu (26 DOF + SDK/API for programming). All weigh ~29kg / 123cm – one person can lift, move, and fit into a car trunk.
- Easy setup – no coding required for basic use Unbox, power on, and start. Manual teaching feature: physically pose the robot, and it replays the motion. Graphical drag-and-drop programming also available.
- More DOF = more expressive movement 26‑DOF models (R1 / R1 Edu) add head and waist articulation for smoother dance and running. For safety reasons, only basic actions are currently available; advanced movements are not yet released.
- Voice interaction + two color options Responds to English voice commands (music, conversation, photo). Choose Gold or Blue‑White with automotive‑grade gloss paint.
- R1 Edu adds open development SDK/API access for custom programming, simulation platforms, and future Unistore content downloads. Adult use only – under 18 requires adult supervision.
The company’s about page describes its work in biomimetic bodies, multimodal intelligence and tendon-driven robotics. Its product pages list humanoid and expressive-face robots, although they do not provide a complete, independently verified consumer specification sheet for Moya.
What can Moya actually do?
Public demonstrations and company material associate Moya with several humanlike features:
- Bipedal walking intended to resemble a human gait.
- Facial expressions and microexpressions.
- Eye-mounted cameras or sensors that can track movement.
- A soft exterior intended to feel less cold and metallic.
- Customizable or modular head and facial designs.
- A possible male-bodied variant.
DroidUp has also described a “cerebellar motor control model” and lightweight, lattice-like artificial “muscle” structures. Those are company descriptions, not results from an independent laboratory test. Event footage may show a controlled demonstration, but it does not establish how Moya performs in a cluttered home, on stairs, over rugs or while handling everyday objects.

Reported specifications
Several third-party reports and databases associate Moya with an approximate height of 1.65 metres, a mass of 32 kilograms and a claimed humanlike gait accuracy of 92 percent. Other reports cite a target exterior temperature of roughly 32–36°C.
These figures should be treated as reported estimates or company claims. The public sources reviewed do not adequately establish Moya’s battery capacity, runtime, recharge time, walking speed, payload, fall recovery, weather resistance, safety certification or final production design.
What does “warm” mean?
Moya’s reported warmth does not mean it has human skin. The concept refers to artificial exterior material and heating or temperature-control systems intended to make contact feel less like touching exposed metal.
That could make a social robot feel more approachable. It could also make the robot more unsettling because warmth is a strongly human sensory cue. A warm surface is not automatically safe for prolonged contact, children, people with reduced sensation, sleeping areas or medical use. Until DroidUp publishes tested limits and safety guidance, “warm” should be understood as a design goal rather than proof of safe physical interaction.
Why does Moya trigger the uncanny valley?
The uncanny valley describes a possible drop in comfort when an artificial figure becomes very humanlike but still contains noticeable discrepancies. The idea is associated with Japanese roboticist Masahiro Mori and is widely discussed in robotics, animation and human-computer interaction.

Moya concentrates several features that can produce that reaction:
- A face that appears human instead of visibly mechanical.
- Eyes that attempt to make contact and follow people.
- Facial expressions designed to communicate emotion.
- A body intended to move with a humanlike gait.
- Soft, warm covering rather than exposed metal.
The closer a machine gets to human appearance, the more noticeable small errors can become. A fixed stare, stiff step, delayed smile, synthetic skin, mistimed expression or emotionally inappropriate response may be more disturbing than the same error from a clearly robotic machine.
The effect is not universal or precisely measurable in every situation. Some people may find Moya impressive or reassuring; others may find it frightening. Reactions can also change depending on whether the robot is seen in a staged video, a reception area or close physical contact.

That has not been established. The original headline’s suggestion that Moya is entering homes goes beyond the evidence currently available.
DroidUp’s materials mention both commercial and family customers, but its listed application areas prominently include research, education, cultural tourism, public service and industrial use. A Shanghai municipal government report said founder Li Qingdu expected the company to focus on business-to-business service markets from 2025 through 2027.
The public material reviewed does not show:
- A normal consumer checkout process.
- A confirmed U.S. distributor or shipping policy.
- An official consumer price.
- A home-installation guide.
- A household warranty or support plan.
- Evidence of unsupervised operation in ordinary homes.
That does not prove private sales are impossible. It does mean Moya should currently be described as a humanoid platform being positioned for future human-facing and possibly domestic use—not as a readily available home product.
How much might Moya cost?
Third-party reporting has cited a target price near ¥1.2 million, roughly $167,000–$173,000 depending on the source and exchange rate. A late-2026 sales target has also appeared in third-party databases.
Those figures conflict slightly and are not confirmed official retail terms. DroidUp’s public pages do not currently provide a standard consumer price or purchase process. Any final cost could also include shipping, specialist installation, software, maintenance, replacement coverings, repairs and support.

A convincing exhibition demonstration answers only a narrow set of questions. Before a humanoid robot could responsibly operate in a home, buyers would need clear evidence about:
- Navigation: Can it cross thresholds, rugs, wet floors, stairs and clutter without falling?
- Manipulation: Can it reliably grip, carry and put away ordinary household objects?
- Safety: What happens when it loses balance, overheats or encounters a child, pet or older adult?
- Autonomy: Can it work without constant supervision, or are demonstrations scripted or remotely assisted?
- Privacy: What do its cameras and microphones record, where is that data processed and how long is it retained?
- Reliability: What are the battery life, recharge time, service intervals and failure-recovery procedures?
- Physical materials: How durable, cleanable and replaceable is the artificial skin?
- Understanding: Does expressive behaviour reflect genuine system understanding, or does it merely produce convincing responses?
The reviewed public sources do not answer these questions adequately. A humanlike face can also encourage emotional overtrust: users may assume the robot understands, cares or exercises more judgment than it really does.

Moya’s humanlike appearance could be useful where presentation and interaction matter more than industrial productivity. Potential applications include reception, visitor information, education, entertainment, cultural venues, research into human-robot interaction and supervised care or companionship experiments.
That is a different value proposition from a practical domestic worker. No evidence reviewed establishes that Moya can reliably cook, clean, provide independent elder care, manage a household or operate safely around children. Its strongest differentiator is social and tactile realism—not proven household productivity.
How Moya differs from other robots
| Robot category | Typical priority | How Moya differs |
|---|---|---|
| Industrial humanoids | Factory, logistics and lifting tasks | Moya places greater emphasis on appearance, expression and social interaction. |
| Research platforms | Development, testing and university use | Moya is presented as a more public-facing and biomimetic platform. |
| Consumer social robots | Conversation, entertainment or assistance | Moya is full-size and bipedal, but far less clearly available to consumers. |
| Telepresence robots | Remote communication | Moya is presented as an embodied autonomous system rather than simply a mobile screen. |
| Animatronics | Appearance and scripted performance | Moya’s stated goal includes mobile locomotion and multimodal interaction. |
The bottom line for prospective buyers
Moya matters because it pushes humanoid robotics toward a combination of humanlike movement, facial expression, eye contact, soft materials and tactile warmth. That combination may make robots more socially useful—or intensify the uncanny valley when their behaviour falls short.
It does not yet demonstrate that an affordable, reliable household android is available. Until DroidUp publishes confirmed retail terms, safety documentation, support arrangements and independent performance evidence, Moya should be viewed as an emerging prototype and commercial platform, not a robot that ordinary U.S. homeowners can simply order.
