Amazon’s Echo Show 21 is an excellent Alexa-centered smart-home dashboard, but it is not a universal smart-home brain. Its 21-inch screen, built-in Alexa, camera controls, routines, Matter support, Thread border-router capability, and Zigbee hub make it unusually convenient for a kitchen or family room. It can directly control compatible devices and provide a genuinely useful shared household display.
The qualification matters. Advanced automation, deep device configuration, platform-neutral control, and a fully custom dashboard still belong elsewhere—usually in the Alexa app, a manufacturer’s app, or a dedicated platform such as Home Assistant or Hubitat. The Echo Show 21 is almost perfect for an Alexa household that wants a large visual control panel. It is not almost perfect for everyone.

What I expected from a smart-home hub
“Smart-home hub” can mean several different things. An Echo Show 21 qualifies in some important senses, but not all of them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Alexa controller: It manages devices linked to your Alexa account, whether they use a manufacturer skill, Matter, Zigbee, or another supported integration.
- Zigbee hub: It can connect compatible Zigbee lights, plugs, switches, sensors, and locks directly, without requiring a separate Zigbee coordinator.
- Matter controller: Compatible Matter devices can be commissioned and controlled through Alexa over Wi-Fi or Thread.
- Thread border router: It can help compatible Matter-over-Thread devices join the home network.
- Automation center: It can run Alexa routines and scenes.
- Universal smart-home server: This is where it falls short. It is not a replacement for the deep local logic and broad customization of Home Assistant, Hubitat, or similar systems.
That distinction is the key to understanding the Echo Show 21. It is best thought of as a large Alexa smart display with built-in smart-home radios, rather than a platform-neutral automation server.

What the Echo Show 21 actually is
The Echo Show 21 is a mains-powered, wall-mount-oriented smart display released as a 2024 model. It has a 21-inch Full HD 1080p screen, built-in Alexa, and Fire TV. Amazon’s specifications list a 13MP camera with a physical privacy cover, four-microphone far-field array, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.0, 4GB of RAM, 16GB of eMMC storage, and Fire OS 7. Amazon’s device specifications provide the detailed hardware listing.
It is not a tablet. You cannot treat it as a general-purpose Android tablet with unlimited app and dashboard options. Its usefulness comes from the fixed smart-display environment: glanceable information, voice control, touch controls, camera viewing, household lists, calendars, entertainment, and Alexa routines in one permanently powered location.
The display can be mounted in portrait or landscape orientation. Portrait is potentially better for vertically arranged widgets, lists, and household information; landscape is more natural for Fire TV content and many video feeds. The choice should be made before mounting because changing the orientation later means physically repositioning the device.

The basic setup is familiar: mount or place the Echo Show 21, connect power and Wi-Fi, sign in to an Amazon account, update the software, and configure Alexa. If you intend to use Fire TV, you can also pair the Alexa Voice Remote.
The less familiar part is finding the right permanent location. The supplied wall bracket makes wall mounting possible, but installation requires tools and planning. Consider the wall structure, cable routing, glare, viewing angle, splash and heat near a kitchen, and whether people can comfortably reach the screen. A large display placed too high may be visible but awkward to operate.
The optional stand is another cost and placement consideration. TechRadar reported a US price of $399.99 for the Echo Show 21 without a stand and an additional $100 for the stand in its February 25, 2025 review. That is a historical price signal, not a verified September 2026 retail price, so check the current listing before buying. TechRadar’s review also describes the bracket, portrait and landscape mounting, and stand arrangement.
Before judging the dashboard, set the device location and time zone, review household and voice-profile settings, configure Drop In, and organize Alexa devices into accurate rooms and groups. Poor naming—such as several devices called “light” or similarly named rooms—can make a capable system feel unreliable.
How it handles everyday smart-home control
The Echo Show 21 is most convincing when used for simple, frequent actions:

- Controlling plugs and switches.
- Adjusting a thermostat.
- Launching a routine.
- Opening a doorbell or camera feed.
- Checking weather, calendars, reminders, and shopping lists.
Voice commands remain the fastest option when your device names and room assignments are sensible. Touch control is the reason to buy a large display rather than another voice-only Echo: a family member or guest can see what is available and tap a control without knowing the right Alexa phrase.
The large screen makes manual lighting control easier to understand than a list of tiny controls. It is also more useful as a shared household surface. One person can see the calendar, another can check the shopping list, and someone else can use a camera shortcut without taking over a phone.
That does not mean every integration behaves identically. A Matter bulb, a Zigbee plug, a thermostat connected through an Alexa skill, and a cloud camera are different systems behind the same interface. The Echo Show 21 may expose only the controls that Alexa and the device manufacturer support. Pairing successfully does not guarantee that every feature available in the manufacturer’s app appears on the Echo Show.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Individual controls are useful, but routines give the Echo Show 21 its strongest smart-home argument. Examples include:
- Good morning: Open blinds, turn on selected lights, report the weather, and read calendar reminders.
- Evening: Set downstairs lights to a lower brightness and adjust the thermostat.
- Bedtime: Turn off lights and plugs, lock compatible doors, and set an alarm.
- Leaving home: Shut down selected devices and announce any relevant reminders.
- Doorbell response: Announce a doorbell press and display the compatible camera.
- Motion lighting: Turn on a light when a compatible sensor detects movement.
These combinations make a single wall display feel more like a household command center than a large speaker. The Echo Show can expose or launch routines, but the Alexa app remains the more important place for creating, editing, diagnosing, and reorganizing them. Deep troubleshooting still tends to move back to the phone.
Routine reliability also depends on the underlying integration. A routine using locally connected Matter or Zigbee devices may behave differently from one involving a cloud-based skill, camera, account service, or internet-dependent action. “Local” should not be treated as a guarantee that an entire routine works during an internet outage.
Matter, Thread, and Zigbee: what each one adds
| Technology | What it is | What the Echo Show 21 handles | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Matter | An interoperability and application standard, not a radio | Compatible Matter devices over Wi-Fi and Thread; commissioning and control through Alexa | Supported categories and exposed features vary by device and firmware |
| Thread | A low-power IPv6 mesh network | Thread 1.3 border-router functionality for compatible Thread devices | Thread support alone does not make a product a Matter device |
| Zigbee | A separate low-power wireless protocol | Direct connection for compatible Zigbee 1.2 and 3.0 devices | Profiles, firmware, range, and manufacturer implementation affect compatibility |
Matter
Amazon says compatible Echo devices can act as Matter administrators and connect Matter devices over Wi-Fi or Thread. The Echo Show 21 is listed among Amazon’s Matter-compatible devices, and Amazon’s documentation references Matter 1.5 SDK support and a subset of Matter 1.5 and earlier device types. That does not mean every Matter 1.5 feature or product is supported. See Amazon’s current Matter documentation for supported categories and requirements.

- Alexa can show you more - Echo Show 5 includes a 5.5” display so you can see news and weather at a glance, make video calls, view compatible cameras, stream music and shows, and more.

Thread
Thread is the network underneath some low-power devices. Amazon identifies the Echo Show 21 as a Thread 1.3 border router. That helps Thread devices communicate with the home network, but the device still needs a supported application layer—typically Matter—for Alexa to control it in the expected way. Commissioning credentials, firmware, mesh conditions, and multi-admin arrangements can still cause problems.
Multiple Thread border routers are not automatically a problem, but adding more does not guarantee better reliability. Network design and device compatibility still matter.
Zigbee
Amazon lists Zigbee 1.2 and 3.0 support and identifies lights, plugs, switches, sensors, and locks as examples of compatible device types. The usual voice path is:
“Alexa, discover my devices.”
If discovery fails, put the product into pairing mode again, move it closer to the Echo Show, remove an old pairing if necessary, and check that it is actually Zigbee rather than Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or Thread. A proprietary bridge may still be required for some products. Zigbee range is affected by walls, interference, placement, and powered devices acting as mesh routers; a quoted range of roughly 50–100 feet is not a guarantee for every home.
Cameras are one of its best use cases—but not a security-monitor replacement
A 21-inch screen is genuinely useful for video doorbells and indoor cameras. A live feed is easier to see from across a kitchen or family room than on a small smart display, and the device also supports video calls and Alexa Drop In. The 13MP front camera and physical shutter are useful hardware features.
There are important limits. A camera feed may rely on the camera company’s cloud service even when a light or sensor is controlled locally through Matter or Zigbee. Camera-specific features, two-way talk, switching behavior, and simultaneous feeds depend on the manufacturer’s Alexa integration. The source hands-on coverage found camera viewing particularly useful but reported occasional loading delays and inconsistent switching; those are observations from that use case, not a promise about every camera or network.
The Echo Show 21 is therefore a good glanceable monitor, not necessarily a dedicated security console. If you need continuous multi-camera recording, local video processing, detailed alerts, or guaranteed low-latency feeds, use a system designed for that purpose.

Privacy also requires more than closing the camera shutter. The shutter covers the camera, but the microphones remain active unless muted. Review Drop In permissions, voice purchasing, personal results, voice and facial recognition settings, and the information visible in calendars, reminders, and camera feeds. A permanently powered screen deserves careful placement in bedrooms and other private areas.

The big-screen advantage is real—but so is the cost
What the size improves
- Camera and doorbell feeds are easier to view.
- Touch targets are more approachable for guests, children, and less technical family members.
- More widgets and household information can be visible at once.
- Calendars, weather, shopping lists, reminders, music, and photos become shared rather than phone-bound.
- Portrait orientation can suit vertically arranged information.
- Landscape orientation is better for Fire TV and many videos.
- One screen can replace several smaller household displays in a carefully chosen location.
What the size makes worse
- The device is expensive compared with smaller Echo products and many tablets.
- It is conspicuous and not portable.
- Wall mounting requires tools, cable planning, and suitable support.
- A stand may cost extra.
- Glare and viewing angle matter more.
- Recommendations, rotating content, and interface clutter are harder to ignore.
- One shared location is less convenient than a phone or portable display.
Size is an advantage only if the household uses the screen. If most control is by voice and the main requirement is a few lights and plugs, the premium is difficult to justify.
Where the software falls short
The largest weakness is not the built-in radio hardware. It is the tension between several jobs: smart-home controller, photo frame, Alexa assistant, Fire TV screen, video-call device, information panel, and Amazon content surface.
The home screen can feel busy. Recommendations and rotating content may compete with the controls you actually want. The interface is more flexible than a voice-only speaker, but it is not a free-form Home Assistant-style dashboard. Before buying, verify the current controls for smart-home favorites, room groups, camera shortcuts, calendar, shopping list, reminders, weather, photos, and content recommendations. UI labels can change with software updates.
Some tasks also take too many taps. Device naming and room organization matter enormously, and the Alexa app remains necessary for adding accounts, renaming devices, editing complex routines, managing permissions, changing advanced settings, and troubleshooting integrations. The Echo Show 21 reduces the need to reach for a phone during daily use; it does not eliminate the app.
That distinction also affects the “perfect” verdict. A display that can control many devices is not the same as a display that lets you design exactly the interface and automation behavior you want.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happens when something fails?
A sensible evaluation should separate the following failure cases:
- Wi-Fi or internet outage: Compatible local Matter or Zigbee controls may still behave differently from cloud skills, cameras, media, and account services.
- Echo Show restart: Allow the device to reconnect and confirm that rooms, favorites, and routines return as expected.
- Camera offline: A smart-home dashboard cannot display a feed that the camera service cannot provide.
- Duplicate names: Rename devices and rooms clearly before testing voice control.
- Moved devices: Recheck room assignments after relocating a product.
- Existing Matter pairing: A device already connected to Apple Home, Google Home, or SmartThings may require multi-admin setup or a new commissioning step.
- Existing Zigbee coordinator: Moving a Zigbee device to the Echo Show may require resetting and re-pairing it.
Matter’s Multi-Admin capability can allow compatible devices to be connected to more than one platform, but that does not turn the Echo Show 21 into a neutral interface for Apple Home, Google Home, Home Assistant, or Hubitat. It remains an Alexa-centered experience.

Echo Show 15 (2nd Gen)
The Echo Show 15 (2nd Gen) follows a similar wall-display concept with a smaller footprint. It retains Alexa, Fire TV, widgets, and smart-home features while demanding less wall space. Choose the Echo Show 21 when across-room readability and large camera feeds justify the additional size and cost.
Echo Show 8
The Echo Show 8 is the better fit for basic voice and touch control at a countertop or bedside. It is less suitable as a shared family dashboard but far easier to place.
Tablet plus a smart-home app
A tablet can offer more app flexibility and portability, but it may require separate charging, mounting, voice hardware, and camera integrations. It is attractive when dashboard customization matters more than a single integrated Alexa appliance.
Home Assistant, Hubitat, and SmartThings
Home Assistant offers deep integrations, local control, and highly customizable dashboards, at the cost of setup and maintenance. Hubitat is more automation-focused and supports local operation across a broad device ecosystem. SmartThings is a mainstream mixed-brand option with a separate display experience. These platforms make more sense when automation depth and ecosystem flexibility matter more than the convenience of a large built-in Alexa screen.
Final verdict
The Echo Show 21 is a legitimate smart-home hub in the narrow technical sense. Amazon lists it as supporting Matter, Matter over Thread, Thread border-router functionality, and Zigbee device control. It can connect compatible devices locally rather than relying exclusively on individual Alexa skills or a separate hub.
In daily life, though, its greatest value is as a large, shared Alexa control panel. Lights, plugs, thermostats, routines, cameras, calendars, lists, weather, and entertainment are more visible and approachable than they would be on a small speaker or a phone. That combination can make it exceptionally convenient in an Alexa-centered home.
It is not a universal controller, a fully local automation server, or a completely custom dashboard. Matter improves interoperability but does not guarantee every feature, Thread does not equal universal compatibility, and Zigbee support does not eliminate device-specific limitations. The Alexa app remains essential for serious configuration and troubleshooting.

So the “almost perfect” judgment is justified only for a specific buyer: someone who wants a large, permanent Alexa household dashboard and will use its camera, routine, information, and touch-control features. For everyone else, the Echo Hub, a smaller Echo Show, a tablet, or a dedicated smart-home platform may be the more sensible answer.
