The right router bit for plywood depends on the cut and which face must stay clean. For a full-depth cut where both faces matter, start with a compression spiral bit; for a clean top face, use a down-cut bit, and for a clean bottom face or better chip removal in a deep cut, consider an up-cut bit.

For template trimming, use a bearing-guided bit or an external guide, and for straightening an edge, use a suitable bit with a fence or straightedge. A clean cut is not the same as a durable edge: exposure-rated plywood and an appropriate finish or edge-protection system matter when moisture is a concern.

Quick guide: match the bit to the cut

Task or priority Bit or guide to consider Important note
Full-depth cut; both plywood faces need a clean result Compression spiral bit Its opposing cut geometry is designed to reduce chip-out on both faces; results still depend on the panel, bit condition, and setup.
Top face is the show face Down-cut or down-shear bit Its cutting action favors the top surface.
Bottom face is the show face, or chip evacuation from a deep cut matters Up-cut spiral bit It favors the bottom face and lifts chips.
Follow a template or reference edge Bearing-guided flush-trim bit, or an unpiloted bit with a suitable guide Match bearing position to the template location. An unpiloted bit needs a straightedge, guide bushing, or other appropriate guide.
Straighten a sawn edge Straight, flush-trim, or spiral bit with a properly set fence or guide Use a controlled, light jointing pass rather than relying on the bit alone to guide the cut.
Cut a groove or dado A bit sized for the measured panel and joint Measure the actual plywood; nominal thickness may not equal the stated size.

Choose by operation and visible face

Before choosing a bit, identify the operation: through-cut, flush trim, straight-edge cleanup, groove or dado, or a small edge profile. Then decide whether the top, bottom, or both faces must remain clean. Consider whether the bit needs to follow a template, how the router will be guided, and which shank sizes the router’s collet accepts.

This helps avoid buying a specialized bit for the wrong job. Compression geometry is most useful when both faces need a clean result in a full-depth cut. It does not replace a bearing or external guide when following a template, and it is not the only option for straightening a rough-sawn edge.

Compression spiral bits

A compression bit combines an up-cut section and a down-cut section. This geometry is designed to pull chips from the bottom while pressing fibers down at the top, helping reduce chip-out on both veneer faces. It is a good starting choice for full-depth cuts in veneered plywood, Baltic-birch plywood, laminate, or melamine when both faces are visible.

Do not treat a compression bit as a guarantee of a flawless edge. Plywood quality, veneer condition, bit sharpness, cutting depth, feed, and workholding all affect the result. Choose a bit with a shank that fits the router and cutting length suited to the panel and intended pass. If you need to follow a template, use the bearing or external guide required by the setup; an unpiloted compression bit cannot guide itself.

Down-cut and up-cut spiral bits

A down-cut or down-shear bit is useful when the top face is the show face. An up-cut bit favors the bottom face and lifts chips, which can help clear them from a deep cut. Choose based on the face that matters and the operation rather than assuming one spiral direction is best for all plywood work.

Flush-trim and straight bits

A bearing-guided flush-trim bit is a straightforward choice for trimming material to a template or established reference edge. Select a top- or bottom-bearing arrangement to suit where the template sits relative to the cutter. If a bearing cannot ride the reference, use an appropriate straightedge or guide bushing with an unpiloted bit.

For straightening an edge, a router-table fence can guide a straight, piloted flush-trim, or spiral bit for a light jointing cut. A guided handheld setup can also work. Keep the work stable and make a test cut before routing a finished panel.

Compatibility and setup

Check the router manual and bit instructions before installing a cutter. A 1/2-inch shank can offer greater stiffness than a 1/4-inch shank when the router and collet accept it, but a 1/4-inch-collet trim router cannot take a 1/2-inch bit. Use the correct collet, clamp the bit securely, and select only enough cutting length for the panel and intended pass.

Follow the router manual and the bit manufacturer’s speed guidance. Never exceed the bit’s rated speed; there is no single appropriate speed for every bit diameter, material, router, and operation. Do not use dull or damaged bits.

How to reduce chip-out

  1. Make a test cut. Use an offcut from the same panel. Plywood varies in veneer, glue line, core construction, and face quality, so a sample reveals how this panel behaves.
  2. Check the bit and setup. Use a sharp, clean bit, secure the work, and confirm the guide, bearing, and cutter are appropriate for the cut.
  3. Take a lighter pass if needed. Shallower passes can reduce chipping and tearout. Do not force a heavy cut through fragile veneer.
  4. Support the vulnerable face. A sacrificial backer or sandwich around the work can help protect the exit face where the setup allows.
  5. Reassess the cutter geometry. If the top face chips, consider a down-cut bit; if the bottom face chips, consider an up-cut bit; if both faces matter in a full-depth cut, consider compression geometry.

Feed against the bit’s rotation as specified for the router operation. Feeding in the wrong direction can create a climb cut and loss of control. Secure the work and use the router-table guard, push devices, and other workholding appropriate to the machine instructions.

Clean edges versus durable edges

A router shapes and cuts the edge; it does not by itself make exposed plywood durable in moisture or weather. For interior furniture or cabinetry, an eased edge, edge banding, or solid-wood edging may suit the design and wear requirements. The finish system and service conditions determine protection.

For exterior or wet service, choose plywood rated for the intended exposure and follow the applicable product and coating instructions. APA distinguishes Exterior panels, suitable for long-term weather or moisture exposure, from Exposure 1 panels, which are intended for temporary construction exposure before protection. Do not treat an Exposure 1 stamp as a promise of permanent outdoor performance. APA

For APA Rated Siding, APA guidance calls for sealing cut edges with a paintable water-repellent preservative when staining or primer when painting, followed by the applicable finish system. Keep that recommendation specific to the product and its coating instructions. APA siding guidance

Router safety and dust

  • Clamp the workpiece; do not hold it in one hand while operating the router with the other.
  • After changing or adjusting a bit, make sure the collet nut and adjustment devices are secure.
  • Do not use dull or damaged bits, and stay within the router and bit speed limits.
  • Feed against the bit’s rotation and use guarding and workholding suited to the machine.
  • Capture dust near the source. OSHA identifies local exhaust ventilation as the primary dust-control method for woodworking equipment.

OSHA’s woodworking guidance includes router-table hood information. NIOSH reports that automated routers can generate substantial wood dust and recommends limiting exposure. Its reported results for a specialized, tested control system should not be assumed for ordinary home-shop dust collectors. OSHA woodworking guidance NIOSH woodworking information

Frequently Asked Questions

Which router bit should I use if both plywood faces need to stay clean?

For a full-depth cut, a compression spiral bit is the best starting choice because its geometry is designed to reduce chip-out on both faces. Test it on an offcut; the result still depends on the plywood, bit condition, and setup.

Should I use a down-cut or an up-cut bit for plywood?

Use a down-cut bit when the top face is the one you need to protect. An up-cut bit favors the bottom face and lifts chips, which can help with chip evacuation in a deep cut.

Can an unpiloted compression bit follow a template?

Not by itself. Use an appropriate external guide, such as a straightedge or guide bushing, or choose a bearing-guided bit suited to the template’s position.

Will a clean routed edge be weatherproof?

No. A clean cut does not establish weather durability. Use plywood rated for the intended exposure and follow the panel and finish manufacturer’s edge-sealing instructions.

Can I use a 1/2-inch-shank bit in a trim router?

Only if the router and its collet are designed to accept that shank. Check the router manual; never force a bit into an incompatible collet.

How can I reduce plywood edge chip-out?

Test on an offcut, use a sharp and clean bit, take lighter passes if needed, and support the vulnerable face with a sacrificial backer where appropriate. Choose down-cut, up-cut, or compression geometry according to which face or faces must remain clean.
