Pinterest announced Try On for Home Decor on January 31, 2022—not in 2026. The Pinterest Lens-powered feature let U.S. users place eligible furniture and home décor products virtually in their rooms before clicking through to a retailer’s website. Its present availability is less certain: Pinterest’s current help documentation is archived and warns that Try On may not be available in every region.
What Pinterest launched
Try On for Home Decor extended Pinterest’s existing augmented-reality shopping approach from beauty products such as lipstick and eyeshadow to furniture and décor. Pinterest said the launch included more than 80,000 shoppable Pins and named Crate & Barrel, CB2, Walmart, West Elm, and Wayfair as U.S. launch partners.

Those figures describe Pinterest’s January 2022 launch. They do not mean every product from those retailers—or every furniture Pin today—supports AR.

How the AR furniture preview worked
- Open an eligible furniture or décor Product Pin in the Pinterest mobile app.
- Tap Try in your space in the Pin’s close-up view.
- Allow Pinterest to use the camera.
- Point the camera at the room and place the virtual product.
- Move, resize, or rotate the object to inspect how it appears in the space.
- Review the product information and follow the retailer link if you want to buy it.
Pinterest’s archived Try On guidance says that only some Pins are eligible. Look for a Try On control or cube icon. On Android, the feature required Google Play Services for AR, in addition to a compatible device and the Pinterest app.
Which retailers and products were included?
The named U.S. launch partners were:
The category was suited to visually evaluated products including sofas, chairs, tables, lamps, mirrors, rugs, and decorative objects. However, a product appearing in a retailer’s catalog or on Pinterest did not automatically make it AR-enabled.
Where it was available
The original rollout covered the United States on Pinterest’s iOS and Android apps. Pinterest said global availability was planned for the future; the announcement should not be read as proof of a worldwide launch.
Availability in 2026 requires a further qualification. Pinterest still has a page describing virtual placement, but it is routed as an archived Try On article and warns that the feature may not be available in a user’s area. Pinterest’s current shopping guidance also notes that features can vary by account and rollout. Therefore, users should treat the Try On button as the practical test of availability rather than assume that the original experience remains universally active.

What AR could—and could not—tell a shopper
The feature made Pinterest’s inspiration-led browsing more concrete. A shopper could get an early sense of whether a piece’s general silhouette worked with existing furnishings, whether its apparent placement felt crowded, and whether it was worth investigating further.
It was not a substitute for a construction-quality fit check. Before ordering furniture, measure:
- Room width, depth, and ceiling height.
- Doorways, corridors, stairwells, lifts, and other delivery routes.
- Clearance around drawers, cabinet doors, recliners, and walkways.
- The space occupied by existing furniture.
AR can also misrepresent or simplify texture, stitching, wood grain, reflectivity, cushion softness, hardware, and color under different lighting. Use the preview to assess appearance—not to guarantee physical scale, finish, comfort, or delivery access.
Pinterest said users were five times more likely to purchase from Try On-enabled Pins than from standard Pins. That is a Pinterest-reported internal comparison, not independent evidence that AR caused the difference.

What happens when you buy?
Pinterest was a discovery and referral layer, not the furniture seller. The purchase continued on the retailer’s website. Price, inventory, delivery, assembly, taxes, customization, and return terms could change after a Pin was created.
Before paying, verify the exact dimensions, materials, finish, weight, lead time, delivery method, assembly requirements, return window, restocking charges, and seller identity—especially when a retailer operates a marketplace. Pinterest’s current shopping help page says it does not handle merchant disputes, shipping, tracking, refunds, or product problems; those issues must be taken to the retailer.
If the Try On option does not appear
- Use the Pinterest mobile app rather than desktop web.
- Update the app and confirm camera permission is enabled.
- On Android, check whether Google Play Services for AR is installed and supported.
- Try another Pin, preferably from one of the named launch retailers.
- Look for the cube icon or Try On button in the Pin close-up.
- If it still does not appear, assume the product, device, account, or region may be unsupported.
As alternatives, Pinterest’s current shopping tools include ordinary product search, visual search, Shop the look, Shop similar, and board-based product discovery. These tools can help locate products but do not necessarily provide room-scale AR placement.

Pinterest’s later shopping direction is related but not identical. Pinterest Assistant, introduced in beta for U.S. users aged 18 and older, focused on personalized and multimodal shopping discovery. The company’s Ask Pinterest announcement describes a limited-access 2026 experiment involving more conversational, complex decisions such as furnishing a room over time.

When Pinterest’s AR approach is useful
It is most useful when you are still deciding what style or shape might work and want a quick visual check before visiting a retailer’s product page. It is a poor fit when you need exact room planning, guaranteed current inventory, precise color matching, or confidence that a large item can pass through a narrow entrance.
Retailer-native AR tools may be better connected to current product catalogs and retailer support, while dedicated room-planning software is generally more appropriate for accurate layouts and multi-item planning. The right choice depends on whether your priority is inspiration, product purchasing, or measurement.
