1X’s NEO Beta was a home-oriented humanoid prototype, not a robot that consumers could buy. Announced on August 30, 2024, the bipedal machine marked 1X Technologies’ move from controlled demonstrations toward limited, real-world testing in selected homes. The company said a small number of NEO Beta units would be deployed during 2024 for research and development.

That distinction matters. NEO Beta was intended to help 1X learn how a lightweight, human-compatible robot behaves around furniture, occupants, pets, objects, lighting changes, and the unpredictable routines of a domestic environment. The announcement did not establish that it could independently perform a complete list of household chores, nor did it present an independent safety certification or standardized performance benchmark.

The launch was framed as a departure from conventional industrial robots, which are typically optimized for repeatable work in controlled areas and may be rigid, heavy, or unsuitable for close interaction with unprotected people. NEO Beta’s design direction was instead based on operating in human spaces and developing what 1X called broadly capable physical intelligence.
For a construction or building-technology audience, the important point is not that the robot had become a finished home appliance. It is that 1X was treating the home as a development environment. The company’s strategy assumed that a general-purpose domestic robot must encounter the same variation that makes residential construction and maintenance difficult: different floor plans, narrow passages, stairs, uneven lighting, clutter, changing surfaces, and people who do not behave like factory operators.
Why 1X wanted to test NEO Beta in homes
Factories offer repeatable layouts, marked work zones, controlled lighting, predictable objects, and procedures designed around the robot. Homes offer almost the opposite. A domestic robot may need to distinguish a fragile object from a durable one, work around a sleeping person, avoid a pet, navigate a room that has been rearranged, or operate safely when a child or visitor unexpectedly enters its path.
1X’s stated rationale was that this variation could not be fully reproduced in a laboratory or factory. Limited home deployments would give the company feedback about how NEO performed in real settings and expose the system to a wider range of environments.
That is a development rationale, not proof that NEO Beta could autonomously manage every household condition. The available launch material does not provide a reliable task-by-task list covering laundry, cooking, cleaning, childcare, eldercare, or other high-consequence activities. It also does not provide a third-party benchmark for autonomy, reliability, battery life, payload, or household safety.

A softer, more human-compatible design
NEO Beta’s central design idea was compatibility with people. 1X emphasized a bio-inspired form, approachable appearance, and movements intended to reduce the hazards associated with placing a large industrial machine near household occupants.
Contemporary reporting also described lightweight construction and foam-like or soft exterior elements. These choices point to a different priority from that of a factory robot. Rather than maximizing payload, speed, or continuous industrial throughput, the Beta concept emphasized reduced mass, compliance, and the ability to share space with people.

In this context, it describes a design philosophy: a human-scale, bipedal machine with softer physical characteristics and movement intended for environments built around people.
What NEO Beta could—and could not—be said to do
The August 2024 announcement focused primarily on the robot’s intended environment, safety priorities, and deployment strategy. It was not a detailed technical specification sheet or an independent product review.
It is accurate to say that:
- NEO Beta was a bipedal humanoid prototype.
- It was designed with home use in mind.
- 1X planned limited deployment in selected homes for research and development.
- The company intended real-world exposure to help develop a general-purpose home robot.
- Its lightweight, soft-oriented design was presented as a safety and human-compatibility choice.
It is not supported by the launch evidence to say that NEO Beta was:

Reuters footage from October 30, 2024 showed several NEO units and described the latest version as being prepared for home piloting. That supports the conclusion that 1X was moving toward physical home trials, but the footage should not be treated as a complete independent evaluation of the robot’s autonomy, reliability, or safety.

NEO Beta is easy to confuse with later products because 1X continued developing the same broad home-humanoid concept. The generations should be kept separate:
| Model | Date and status | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| NEO Beta | August 2024 | A home-oriented bipedal prototype. 1X announced limited deployment in selected homes for research and development. |
| NEO Gamma | February 2025 | The next generation of 1X’s home humanoids, with a more consumer-oriented design and announced improvements in gait, manipulation, reliability, and home testing. |
| NEO Home Robot | October 2025 | A later product presented as the successor to both NEO Gamma and NEO Beta, with pre-order terms and planned U.S. delivery beginning in 2026. |
In its February 21, 2025 Gamma announcement, 1X described features including emotive ear rings, a whole-body controller, improved manipulation, and a soft-covered tendon-drive architecture. The company said Gamma could walk with a human-like gait, swing its arms, squat to pick up objects, and sit in chairs.
1X also described a manipulation system trained to pick up a broad variety of objects in situations not seen during training. According to the company, neural networks predicted teleoperated actions from raw sensor data. Those details suggest a development approach combining learned autonomous behaviors with teleoperation and continuing training. They do not prove that every advertised behavior worked unattended in an ordinary home—and they describe Gamma, not Beta.
What changed with the later NEO product
On October 28, 2025, 1X announced the NEO Home Robot and opened pre-orders. The company described its hardware platform as succeeding both NEO Gamma and NEO Beta.

A home humanoid is also a test of the built environment. Human homes are designed around human reach, balance, sightlines, stair dimensions, door clearances, countertop heights, storage systems, and appliance interfaces. A bipedal robot may be able to use those features, but it must also cope with the assumptions and inconsistencies built into them.
That creates several practical questions for future residential design:
- Can the robot move through doorways and around furniture without damaging finishes or blocking occupants?
- Can it manage thresholds, stairs, rugs, wet floors, and other changes in surface condition?
- Are controls, handles, switches, and storage areas reachable and visually understandable to both people and machines?
- Can a home provide safe charging and parking space without creating a trip, fire, or evacuation hazard?
- How should homes be designed when a robot may be remotely supervised or piloted?
- What privacy, access-control, and cybersecurity measures are needed when cameras and sensors operate throughout a residence?
NEO Beta did not answer those questions. Its significance was that 1X was beginning to test them outside a controlled facility. The selected-home approach treated domestic architecture as part of the robot’s operating problem rather than as a standardized backdrop.

Bottom line on the NEO Beta photos and launch
The August 2024 NEO Beta unveiling showed a strategic shift: 1X wanted to develop a lighter, softer, human-compatible humanoid by placing limited prototype units in real homes. The milestone was the move toward domestic field research, not the arrival of a finished household appliance.
Later NEO Gamma and NEO Home Robot announcements show how the platform evolved, but they should not be used to inflate what was demonstrated by Beta. The most accurate description remains: NEO Beta was a bio-inspired humanoid prototype intended for limited home-use research, with no evidence in the available materials of universal autonomy, independent safety certification, or general consumer availability.
