Yes—the Philips Hue Twilight can simulate both sunrise and sunset. Its Wake up automation gradually changes the lamp from dim, warm light to brighter, cooler light. Its Go to sleep automation reverses the process, fading through warm and red-toned light before turning off.
Twilight is best understood as a premium Hue smart lamp with sleep-and-wake routines, not as a conventional alarm clock. It has a swiveling front reading light, a rear ColorCast gradient light for washing the wall with color, and physical buttons. The U.S. product page listed it at $319.99 when checked on August 18, 2026; prices and availability can change. Check the current Philips Hue price.

What is the Philips Hue Twilight?
Twilight is an integrated Philips Hue bedside lamp designed around bedtime and morning routines. Unlike a standard Hue bulb, it combines two useful light sources:
Recommended Free Tools
- Front light: a swiveling reading and illumination light.
- Rear ColorCast light: a gradient source that projects blended colors onto the wall behind the lamp.
It is a full-color RGBW Hue lamp that can also function as an ordinary reading light, ambient lamp, and smart-home light. Philips lists 1,380 lumens at 4,000 K, a color-temperature range of 2,000–6,500 K, integrated 13.4-watt LEDs, Bluetooth and Zigbee connectivity, a two-year warranty, and a nominal LED lifetime of 25,000 hours. The lamp is approximately 13 inches high, 6.25 inches long, and 6.5 inches wide. It requires mains power, so it is not portable.

How the sunrise simulation works
Twilight’s Wake up automation is a timed color-and-brightness transition:
- The routine begins at its scheduled start time with very dim, warm light.
- The color moves through warmer morning tones.
- Brightness increases progressively.
- By the selected wake time, the lamp reaches a brighter, cooler-toned setting.
This is a sunrise-style transition that simulates the colors and gradual brightening of sunrise. Philips does not describe it as a measured recreation of outdoor daylight or a specific lux-equivalent exposure. Its effect will depend on the lamp’s position, the brightness of the room, blackout curtains, the sleeper’s sensitivity to light, and sleep depth.
A practical starting point is to begin the routine 20–30 minutes before the desired wake time, then adjust the duration and final brightness. Aim the rear gradient toward a nearby wall visible from the bed. Keep an audible alarm while testing it: light-based alarms do not wake everyone, particularly heavy sleepers or people wearing sleep masks. Philips’ wake-up guidance also uses a 20–30-minute example range.

How the sunset simulation works
Twilight’s Go to sleep automation gradually dims the light, shifts into warm and red-toned scenes, and eventually turns the lamp off. Philips describes the sleep-oriented scenes as designed without blue light. That describes the selected Hue scenes—not every possible color setting—and it is not evidence that Twilight treats insomnia, resets the circadian rhythm, or delivers clinically proven sleep outcomes.
The Hue button on top of the lamp starts the Sunset-style routine by default, making it possible to begin the wind-down sequence without opening the app. With a Hue Bridge, the button behavior can be customized. Philips’ launch description refers to sleep and circadian considerations as part of the product design rationale; those claims should not be confused with independent clinical validation. Read Signify’s launch announcement.
What do the physical buttons do?
By default, Twilight’s controls do not behave like a conventional dimmer:

Do you need a Hue Bridge?
No, not for basic control. Twilight can be controlled over Bluetooth through the Hue app. Bluetooth is suitable for a simple setup with one lamp: turning it on and off, changing brightness and color, and performing basic local control.
The Bridge becomes more useful when you want remote control away from home, broader automation options, customized accessories and buttons, coordination with other Hue lights, or wider smart-home integration.

Placement and routine advice
For a gentler wake-up
- Place the lamp where its light is visible from the bed.
- Use a nearby light-colored wall to make the rear gradient more noticeable.
- Start with a 20–30-minute transition.
- Increase the final brightness or extend the transition if you do not notice it.
- Keep a normal audible alarm until the routine has proved reliable for you.
For bedtime
- Schedule the routine when low-stimulation activities begin.
- Avoid pointing the bright front light directly into your eyes.
- Use the front light for reading before starting the sleep routine.
- Check whether the automation includes other Hue lights.
For a whole-room sunrise
One bedside lamp may not produce noticeable light across a large or bright bedroom. Add other Hue lights to the same automation if you want the room—not just the bedside area—to brighten. Confirm the selected room or zone before saving.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Twilight worth $319.99?
The price premium pays for the integrated dual-source design, rear wall wash, swiveling reading light, physical controls, and Hue ecosystem compatibility. It does not establish that Twilight provides a more medically powerful wake-up signal than a dedicated sunrise lamp.
A Hue Bridge is optional for basic Bluetooth use but adds cost if you need remote control, extensive automation, accessories, or multiple Hue lights. Philips pages showed different Bridge prices in the available listings—$59.99 on one product page and $69.99 on another—so check the live price before buying.
Twilight makes the most sense if you already use Hue, care about design and ambient color, and want one premium bedside fixture to handle reading, atmosphere, and routines. It is less compelling if your only goal is an inexpensive sunrise alarm, built-in audio, battery backup, or a dedicated clock interface.

Twilight versus Philips SmartSleep
Philips SmartSleep models are more suitable when the main requirement is a standalone sleep-and-wake device. Philips lists features across the range such as simulated sunrise and sunset, multiple lights and sounds, and, on some models, FM radio and breathing guidance. Features vary by model; see the Philips SmartSleep comparison page and the HF3650 product page.
- Choose Twilight: for premium Hue integration, ColorCast ambiance, a reading light, and smart-home coordination.
- Choose SmartSleep: for alarm-focused controls, sound, radio, breathing features, or a more standalone experience.
- Choose a standard Hue color lamp or bulb: for a potentially cheaper route into Hue wake-up automations, accepting that you will not get Twilight’s integrated rear gradient, dedicated sleep button, or purpose-built dual-source design.
- Add more Hue lamps: if one bedside unit cannot illuminate a larger bedroom, accepting the additional equipment cost.
Troubleshooting
Twilight does not appear in the Hue app
Confirm that it is powered, move the phone closer for Bluetooth setup, scan the product QR code, or use the app’s search/no-QR-code route. Restart the app and retry. For a Bridge setup, confirm that the phone and Bridge are on the same local network. See Philips’ connection support.
The automation runs but does not wake you
Extend the transition, raise the final brightness, move the lamp nearer or toward a visible wall, add another Hue light, and retain an audible alarm.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe routine controls unwanted lights
Review the selected room or zone, remove unintended lights, and check accessory assignments and button customization if you use a Bridge.
The buttons do not dim the lamp
That is expected by default. The physical buttons are assigned to scenes and the sleep routine; a Bridge enables more customization.
Bottom line
The Philips Hue Twilight genuinely simulates sunrise and sunset through gradual color and brightness changes. Its rear ColorCast light makes the effect more distinctive than a basic smart bulb, while the front swiveling light keeps it useful as a bedside lamp. However, it remains a smart lamp rather than a complete alarm clock or clinical light-therapy device. Buy it for premium Hue integration and design; choose SmartSleep or a cheaper Hue setup if standalone alarm features or value matter more.
