Philips Hue lights get bigger, brighter, and cheaper with a major product refresh

Philips Hue’s 2025 refresh adds a high-capacity Bridge Pro, lower-cost Essential bulbs, brighter light strips and Matter-over-Thread support. Here is what changed and which setup makes sense.

Philips Hue’s September 2025 refresh was much broader than a bulb update. It introduced the higher-capacity Hue Bridge Pro, lower-cost Essential bulbs, brighter and smoother new light strips, expanded outdoor Festavia products, native Matter-over-Thread support on selected bulbs, and software features such as MotionAware.

The best upgrade depends on what you need. New buyers can enter the Hue ecosystem more cheaply with Essential products, large installations have a clear reason to choose Bridge Pro, and Matter-first households may be able to skip a Hue Bridge altogether. Existing owners with a small or medium system generally do not need to upgrade.

What changed in the Philips Hue refresh?

Signify announced the refresh at IFA on September 4, 2025. Rather than replacing one product, Philips Hue expanded several parts of its system:

Product or feature Main change Best suited to
Hue Bridge Pro Up to 150-plus lights, 50 accessories, MotionAware and expanded storage Large or growing Hue installations
Hue Essential Lower-cost bulbs, strips and starter kits New and budget-conscious buyers
OmniGlow 2,700-lumen, smoother 10-foot strip Visible architectural lighting
Flux strips Lower-cost 10- and 16-foot options Hidden or value-focused installations
Festavia expansion New outdoor globe and permanent string-light products Patios, rooflines and seasonal decoration
Matter-over-Thread bulbs Selected bulbs can connect directly to compatible smart-home platforms Small Matter- and Thread-first systems
MotionAware and AI features More automation options through Hue software Users building a broader smart home

Signify describes the update as an attempt to make Hue a broader smart-home platform, not simply a collection of connected lamps. The headline “bigger, brighter, and cheaper” is broadly fair, but it applies to different products in different ways. Signify’s announcement and Philips Hue’s current product pages provide the relevant specifications.

  • EXPAND YOUR SETUP: Add a Hue Bridge and other Hue products to unlock more features, including home security and content syncing with music, movies, and video games

Hue Bridge Pro: the meaningful upgrade for large installations

The Hue Bridge Pro remains a central hub, but it is designed for substantially larger systems than the standard Bridge.

  • Bridge Pro: up to 150-plus lights and 50 accessories.
  • Standard Bridge: up to 50 lights and 12 accessories.
  • Bridge Pro storage: more than 500 custom lighting scenes.
  • Connections: Ethernet or Wi-Fi, although Philips recommends Ethernet for maximum stability.
  • App requirements listed by Philips: Android 12 or later and iOS 17 or later.

Signify says the Bridge Pro has a processor five times more powerful and memory 15 times larger than the standard Bridge. Those are manufacturer comparisons, not independent performance benchmarks, so they should not be read as a guarantee of a particular speed improvement in everyday use.

The current U.S. list price is $139.99, checked August 18, 2026. Bridge Pro launched in North America at $98.99 in September 2025, so repeating the launch price would be misleading. The standard Bridge is currently listed at $69.99. See the official Bridge Pro page for current specifications and availability.

What is MotionAware?

MotionAware allows compatible Hue lights to help detect motion, potentially reducing the number of separate Hue motion sensors needed. Philips says up to 95% of existing Hue products are compatible, but that is Philips’ claim and should not be treated as an independently verified result.

MotionAware may simplify room automations, but it is not automatically a replacement for every dedicated motion or presence sensor. Placement, compatible hardware and firmware matter. Buyers should check the exact products in their installation before relying on the feature for security or critical lighting.

  • SWITCH TO SMART LIGHTING: Enjoy smart lighting instantly: screw in your bulb, download the Hue app, and control your light remotely.

  • EXPAND YOUR SETUP: Add a Hue Bridge and other Hue products to unlock more features, including home security and content syncing with music, movies, and video games.

Who should buy Bridge Pro?

Bridge Pro makes the most sense if you:

  • Have, or expect to have, more than 50 Hue lights.
  • Need more than 12 accessories.
  • Are combining indoor, outdoor and decorative lighting.
  • Want MotionAware.
  • Plan to build around Hue Secure and other Hue services.
  • Need to place the hub away from the router using Wi-Fi.

It is not a universal speed upgrade. A small apartment with several bulbs, a switch and a few scenes will usually get the core Hue experience from the standard Bridge at roughly half the current price.

Hue Essential: cheaper entry-level lighting, with compromises

Hue Essential is the lower-cost range. The initial products include A19 bulbs, BR30 bulbs, GU10 spotlights, strip lights and starter kits. Signify says Essential products use the same general software and connectivity foundation as Hue’s main line, while simplifying lighting performance to reduce cost. They work through Bluetooth and gain more features when connected to a Hue Bridge.

A current U.S. example is the 800-lumen Essential A19 four-pack for $59.99. That is a significant reduction in entry price, but “cheaper Hue” does not mean every Essential bulb is identical to a premium Hue bulb. Compare each model’s:

  • Brightness and equivalent wattage.
  • Color range and white-light capability.
  • Dimming behavior and color performance.
  • Bluetooth, Bridge and Matter support.
  • Pack size and any included hub or accessories.

Philips’ current U.S. lighting catalog and starter-kit catalog show current product combinations and prices. Promotions and bundle pricing can change, so treat those figures as date-specific rather than permanent retail prices.

OmniGlow and Flux: the biggest visual change

OmniGlow

The 10-foot OmniGlow strip is rated at 2,700 lumens and currently listed at $139.99 in the U.S. It uses chip-scale packaging to create a smoother, more continuous appearance with fewer visible hotspots.

  • SMART CONTROLS: Control your LED light remotely using the award-winning Hue app or add a Bridge to control using your preferred home assistant—compatible with Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple Home

  • BUILT TO LAST: These Hue LED bulbs are designed to last, with an average lifespan of 25,000 hours

That makes OmniGlow the more interesting choice when the strip itself will be visible or used for architectural lighting. It is intended for direct or indirect illumination where uneven points of light would be noticeable.

Flux

Flux strips target value and length:

  • 10-foot Flux: 1,200 lumens and $69.99.
  • 16-foot Flux: 2,000 lumens and $99.99.

Flux products include Chromasync precision color blending, customizable scenes and effects, and bright white-light output. They are likely to make more sense when installed behind furniture, molding or a diffuser, where the strip is hidden and the lower price matters more than premium diffusion.

Lumens alone do not determine strip quality. Before buying, check whether the exact model can be cut or extended, whether its power supply is included, whether it is indoor- or outdoor-rated, and whether it supports the lighting effects you want.

For television lighting, do not assume that a new Hue strip is a complete synchronization system. Philips lists the Play gradient lightstrip as requiring both a Hue Bridge and Hue Sync Box. Other strips may be intended for general room or architectural lighting rather than screen syncing.

Matter, Thread and the Hue Bridge are different choices

Hue now supports Matter through two distinct routes.

Matter through a Hue Bridge

Philips says both the regular Bridge and Bridge Pro support Matter after software updates. Hue products connected to a Bridge can therefore be exposed to compatible ecosystems such as Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Samsung SmartThings. This route preserves the broader Hue ecosystem, including its app, scenes, accessories and entertainment features.

Direct Matter-over-Thread

Selected newer bulbs can connect directly to a compatible smart-home platform without a Hue Bridge. This requires:

  • A bulb with the Matter logo on its packaging.
  • A compatible Thread Border Router.
  • A compatible controller ecosystem.
  • The Matter QR code supplied with the bulb or setup documentation.

Examples of Thread Border Router hardware listed by Philips include Apple HomePod mini, fourth-generation Amazon Echo smart speakers, certain Nanoleaf products and Google Nest Hub hardware.

Direct Matter-over-Thread can be a good fit for a few bulbs in a Matter-first home, but it does not expose every Hue-specific feature. Bluetooth-connected products cannot be used with Matter through the Bridge arrangement, and Philips identifies exceptions including the Hue Play HDMI Sync Box and the dial on the Tap Dial Switch.

Do existing Hue owners need to upgrade?

Usually, no. The standard Bridge still supports 50 lights and 12 accessories and provides the core Hue experience: scenes, automations, remote control and broad smart-home integration.

Bridge Pro is worth considering when your installation is approaching those limits, when you want MotionAware, or when you are building a whole-home system with many rooms and outdoor products. It is also attractive to new buyers who want the newest hub and prefer Wi-Fi placement, although Philips recommends Ethernet for stability.

If you migrate from a standard Bridge

Existing Hue products remain compatible with Bridge Pro, and Philips provides a migration process. Before starting:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Document or back up important rooms, scenes and automations.
  2. Confirm that the new Bridge Pro is associated with the correct Hue account.
  3. Follow Philips’ migration instructions rather than deleting the old Bridge first.
  4. Keep the old Bridge powered until migration succeeds.
  5. Recheck room assignments, accessories, automations, voice assistants and third-party integrations.

Do not assume that every third-party integration will require no attention after migration. The migration experience can depend on the size and complexity of the installation.

How Hue compares with alternatives

System Most appealing to Main trade-off
Govee Buyers prioritizing lower prices, bright effects and a broad strip-light range Feature and integration differences vary substantially by model
Nanoleaf Matter/Thread users and buyers seeking modular wall lighting Its product range is different from Hue’s mature bulb-and-accessory system
LIFX Buyers wanting bright Wi-Fi bulbs without a proprietary hub Wi-Fi lighting has different network and scalability considerations
IKEA smart lighting Budget-conscious multi-room installations Generally less focused on premium color lighting and entertainment syncing
Home Assistant Advanced users wanting local, multi-brand automation More setup and troubleshooting than a consumer Hue installation

Hue remains strongest when you value a mature bulb-and-accessory ecosystem, entertainment lighting, reliable hub-based scaling and a polished app. Govee, IKEA or direct Matter products may offer better value for a small or price-sensitive installation. Home Assistant is a different proposition: it is an automation platform rather than a simple plug-and-play Hue replacement.

Which Philips Hue setup should you buy?

  • A few bulbs and the lowest entry cost: Start with Essential bulbs. Bluetooth may be enough for basic local control; add the standard Bridge if you need the full Hue ecosystem.
  • A typical small or medium Hue home: Choose the standard Bridge. It remains the better-value hub unless you specifically need Pro features.
  • A large or expanding installation: Choose Bridge Pro for its 150-plus-light and 50-accessory capacity, expanded scenes and MotionAware.
  • A Matter-first home: Consider direct Matter-over-Thread bulbs if you already have a Thread Border Router and do not need Hue Sync, advanced Hue accessories or Hue Secure integration.
  • Visible architectural strip lighting: Choose OmniGlow when smoothness and reduced hotspots matter more than price.
  • Hidden or budget strip lighting: Choose Flux when a diffuser or concealed installation makes premium diffusion less important.
  • Television synchronization: Check the exact Hue Sync requirements. A strip may require both a Bridge and Sync Box.

The refresh makes Hue more accessible without making every Hue product inexpensive. Essential lowers the entry point, OmniGlow improves the premium strip-light proposition, and Bridge Pro gives large systems room to grow. For most existing owners, however, the standard Bridge is still sufficient; the upgrade case is capacity and new features, not a universal improvement in everyday lighting.
