Can You Use a Smart TV Without the Internet?

A smart TV can usually work without internet as a traditional TV or display, but streaming apps and most smart features require a connection.

Yes—usually. Without an internet connection, a smart TV can still function as a conventional television or large display. You can often watch antenna channels, use a cable or satellite box, connect a game console or disc player, display a computer, and sometimes play compatible files from USB. Netflix, YouTube, app downloads, cloud voice search, recommendations, and most other smart features generally will not work.

The important qualification is setup: some brands and models require internet access or an account for first-time activation, while others offer a basic-TV or “connect later” option.

What works without internet?

What you want to do Internet needed? What you need
Watch local broadcast channels No, after supported setup Antenna and built-in tuner
Watch cable or satellite Usually not for the TV Provider receiver connected by HDMI
Play offline console games No Console and HDMI cable
Watch DVDs or Blu-rays No Disc player and HDMI cable
Use the TV as a monitor No Computer and HDMI cable
Play local USB media Usually no Compatible TV, drive, and file formats
Stream Netflix or YouTube Yes Internet through Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or hotspot
Download apps or firmware Yes Internet connection

“Smart TV” describes the software platform, not a requirement that every function use the internet. HDMI, antenna, USB, and ordinary picture and sound controls are separate from online streaming.

What you cannot normally do offline

Installed apps still need internet to retrieve programs, authenticate your account, and receive service data. Without a connection, streaming apps may open but display an error or fail to sign in. Cached content is not automatically available, and downloaded programs remain subject to each service’s rules.

INSIGNIA 32" Class F20 Series LED HD Smart Fire TV, Voice Remote with Alexa, Free & Live TV
  • 720p resolution - View your favorite movies, shows and games in high definition.
  • Alexa voice control - The Alexa Voice Remote lets you easily control your entertainment, search across apps, switch inputs, and more using just your voice. Press and hold the voice button and ask Alexa to easily find, launch, and control content, and even switch to cable.
  • Access thousands of shows with Fire TV - Watch over 1.5 million streaming movies and TV episodes with access to thousands of channels, apps and Alexa skills, including Prime Video, Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, YouTube, Apple TV+, Disney+, ESPN+, Sling TV, Paramount+, and other services right from this TV.*
  • DTS Virtual-X Sound - An immersive sound format creates a three-dimensional sound experience with your TV’s speakers.
  • Supports HDMI ARC - Sends audio directly from the HDMI jack to a compatible soundbar or AV receiver, removing the need for an extra cable.

You also lose app-store access, software updates, online recommendations, cloud-based voice recognition, and many electronic program guides. A physical remote usually continues to work, but a phone remote-control app generally needs a local network. Bluetooth accessories may work because Bluetooth is a local connection, although pairing menus vary by model.

Does no internet mean no Wi-Fi?

No. These are different situations:

  • No internet: The TV may be connected to a router, but that network has no broadband access.
  • No Wi-Fi: The TV has no wireless connection. It may still use Ethernet, HDMI, antenna, USB, or another wired input.
  • No network: The TV is completely offline.
  • No cable service: You may still receive local broadcasts with an antenna.

A phone hotspot supplies internet; it is not an offline solution. It can be useful for occasional activation or streaming, but it may consume mobile data and be limited by cellular coverage, battery life, speed, or your carrier’s plan.

Watching local channels with an antenna

An antenna receives over-the-air broadcasts directly, so it does not require broadband or Wi-Fi. Connect its coaxial cable to the TV’s Ant/Cable In socket—not an HDMI port—and run the television’s channel scan. Depending on the brand, the command may be called Scan for Channels, Auto Program, or Channel Scan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect the antenna to Ant/Cable In.
  2. Power an amplified antenna from its outlet or USB supply.
  3. Open the TV’s channel or Live TV settings.
  4. Start an automatic channel scan.
  5. If reception is poor, move the antenna near a window or higher in the room and scan again.

Available stations depend on location, terrain, building materials, antenna placement, and local broadcast coverage. An antenna does not provide an on-demand catalog like Netflix. Offline program guides may be limited or unavailable because guide data can come from the internet.

Roku’s instructions describe connecting an antenna to the Ant/Cable In port and scanning for channels, but Roku also warns that setup and Live TV behavior vary by TV system. See Roku’s antenna and cable-TV instructions.

Using cable or satellite without internet

If your provider supplies a separate cable or satellite receiver, the TV can usually display its HDMI output without having internet itself:

  1. Connect the receiver to an HDMI input.
  2. Turn on the receiver and television.
  3. Press Input or Source.
  4. Select the HDMI port in use.
  5. Use the provider’s remote to change channels and open its guide.

The provider may have its own communication requirements. On-demand programs, pay-per-view, authentication, or provider apps may need an internet connection. A direct coaxial connection works only where the provider still supports it; many services require a set-top box.

Using HDMI devices offline

HDMI carries audio and video from a source to the TV; it does not itself require internet. You can connect an offline-capable game console, DVD or Blu-ray player, laptop, camera, camcorder, or other video source.

  1. Connect the source to an HDMI port.
  2. Turn on both devices.
  3. Choose the matching HDMI input with Input, Source, or the TV’s input menu.

The source device may have separate requirements. A console might need internet for account verification, game downloads, updates, or cloud saves, but the TV can still display an offline game. Similarly, HDMI from a laptop is generally more dependable offline than wireless casting.

If the screen says No Signal, check that the source is powered on, select the correct input, reseat both cable ends, try another HDMI port, and test another compatible cable. Some sources also require compatible HDCP support or a particular resolution. For 4K or HDR equipment, follow the cable and port guidance for your specific devices; Roku’s HDMI requirements guide gives a useful general reference.

Playing files from a USB drive

Some TVs can play locally stored photos, music, and videos from USB, but a USB port does not guarantee video playback. Check the model manual for “USB media playback,” supported file formats, codecs, subtitles, resolutions, and file-system limits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

One MP4 may play while another does not because the files use different video or audio codecs. Some ports are intended only for service, storage, or power. DRM-protected streaming downloads generally cannot be copied to a drive and played freely.

First-time setup may require internet

Initial activation can be stricter than later offline use. During setup, look for options such as:

  • Skip
  • Set up later
  • Connect to the internet later
  • Use as a basic TV
  • Set up without internet

Then connect the antenna, HDMI device, or USB drive and test it before removing any temporary network connection. If the TV has no offline option, a phone hotspot may allow activation, but it is not guaranteed to work: the TV may also need account verification, a software download, or a stable connection.

Use a factory reset only as a last resort because it erases settings and accounts. After resetting, look carefully through every setup screen for a smaller “Later,” “Skip,” or basic-use option.

Brand and platform differences

Roku TV

Roku’s current documentation distinguishes between TV systems. Some Roku TVs require internet for initial setup, while eligible systems provide a Connect to the Internet Later path or an unlinked mode. In unlinked mode, Roku streaming services and the Streaming Store are unavailable, but external inputs and, on supported systems, antenna or cable sources remain usable. See Roku’s unlinked-mode guidance.

LG webOS TV

LG says its televisions can display antenna or cable content without internet, while streaming apps and other internet-dependent features will not work. Exact menus, tuner availability, and USB behavior depend on the model and region. LG’s general explanation is available at LG’s Smart TV guide.

Samsung TV

Samsung describes external HDMI devices and terrestrial or over-the-air television as available functions on applicable TVs without account login, while Samsung TV Plus is an internet-based service. Model year, region, tuner, and software version matter; consult the model’s manual and Samsung’s TV Plus information.

Sony Google TV and Android TV

Sony documentation indicates that some TV functions and apps can be used without signing in to a Google account. That is different from being offline: streaming still requires internet access. See Sony’s account guidance.

Other brands can behave differently, and firmware updates may change menus or requirements. The model-specific manual is the most authoritative source.

If the TV demands Wi-Fi

  1. Look for a small Skip, Later, or Basic TV choice.
  2. Try completing activation temporarily through a phone hotspot.
  3. Disconnect the hotspot after activation and test the antenna or HDMI input.
  4. For Roku, check whether the specific model supports unlinked mode or “Connect to the Internet Later.”
  5. Use a factory reset only after recording settings and understanding that accounts and preferences will be erased.

If an antenna works during setup but not afterward, check that the antenna amplifier still has power, the channel scan was saved, and the TV has a separate antenna or TV input that does not depend on an online guide.

Which option fits your situation?

Your goal Best fit Main trade-off
Free local news, weather, and broadcast stations Antenna Reception and channel selection depend on location
Existing paid television service Cable or satellite receiver Monthly service and provider-specific requirements remain
Offline games, discs, or personal files Console, disc player, computer, or USB Source-device compatibility and separate cables or remotes
Occasional streaming or activation Phone hotspot Uses cellular data and depends on coverage
Better smart-TV software where internet is available External streaming device It does not provide streaming without internet

A Roku, Apple TV, or similar streaming box will not solve a genuinely offline streaming problem. These devices are designed to access online services through Wi-Fi or Ethernet. They can serve as another HDMI source, but they do not create internet access.

Does an antenna need Wi-Fi?

No. An antenna receives broadcast signals directly. An amplified model still needs electrical or USB power.

Can I use USB movies without internet?

Sometimes. The TV must support USB media playback, and the video’s container, codec, audio, subtitle, and resolution must be compatible.
