Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen) review: The coolest yet

The fourth-generation Nest Learning Thermostat is Google’s most polished model yet, but its $279.99 price and Google Home dependence make it a targeted upgrade rather than an automatic buy.

Verdict: The fourth-generation Google Nest Learning Thermostat is Google’s most attractive and capable Nest thermostat, but its $279.99 U.S. price makes it a premium upgrade rather than an automatic buy. It is a strong choice for Google Home households that want automatic scheduling, a polished physical control, broad 24V HVAC support, and an included remote temperature sensor. It is less compelling for budget buyers, local-control advocates, and anyone whose existing thermostat already keeps the home comfortable.

Before buying, check your HVAC system with Google’s compatibility checker. “Usually does not need a C wire” is not the same as “works with every system,” particularly with heat pumps, dual-fuel equipment, multiple transformers, zoning, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, and ventilation equipment.

What is new in the fourth-generation Nest?

The practical improvements are more important than Google’s “smartest yet” marketing language. The Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen) has a larger 2.7-inch circular display with 600 × 600 resolution, a redesigned body available in Polished Silver, Polished Obsidian, and Polished Gold, built-in Soli motion sensing, temperature, humidity and ambient-light sensors, Matter certification, broader terminal support, and an included Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd Gen).

Setup and primary configuration now require the Google Home app rather than the older Nest-app experience. The thermostat also adds or expands automation features including Adaptive Eco, Natural Heating and Cooling, Smart Ventilation, Savings Finder, Seasonal Savings, and Smart Schedule. Those features may reduce effort or energy use, but energy savings depend on climate, insulation, HVAC efficiency, occupancy, utility rates, and the temperatures a household accepts.

Google lists the thermostat at $279.99 in the U.S., including one temperature sensor. See the official specifications for the current product details.

Design and display: the main reason to want it

The fourth-generation model looks and feels more like a premium piece of home hardware than a small wall-mounted control. Its larger circular screen should be easier to read across a room, while the rotating outer ring and click action remain more immediately understandable than a touchscreen-only interface.

The display can show the target temperature, current temperature, weather and other system information, and wakes when someone approaches. The polished finishes are distinctive, although reflective surfaces can show fingerprints and glare. Whether the redesign justifies the price depends on how much the thermostat is part of your room’s visual environment; the underlying heating and cooling controls are not transformed simply because the case is more attractive.

A trim plate and steel plate are included to help cover old screw holes or paint marks. However, owners of older Nest models should not assume this is a display-only replacement. The fourth-generation thermostat uses new installation hardware, so replacing an older Nest involves removing the existing base and installing the new one.

Learning and scheduling: useful, but not magic

The thermostat observes manual temperature changes and routine patterns, then can create or modify a schedule. Presence and activity signals can also influence how it behaves. It offers suggestions and energy-saving adjustments rather than requiring every decision to be automatic.

That works best for households with predictable routines. A family that leaves at similar times each weekday may appreciate a schedule that adjusts itself. Shift workers, people who work from home irregularly, households with babies or pets, and frequent guests may prefer a manually created schedule with automation limited to reminders or small adjustments.

You can override the thermostat from the wall or Google Home, but automation is only useful if the household trusts it. Review the schedule after installation and turn off or limit features that create uncomfortable setbacks. Do not buy it on the assumption that Google’s learning features guarantee a particular reduction in energy bills.

Is the included temperature sensor worth it?

Yes, if the thermostat is installed in a hallway or other location that does not represent the room you actually care about. The included Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd Gen) can measure a bedroom, nursery, office or living area and let the thermostat use that room as the target location at selected times. Up to six additional sensors can be added per thermostat, and Google says all generations of Nest Temperature Sensor work with this model.

A realistic use case is prioritizing the bedroom overnight and the office during working hours. The sensor can improve comfort in one selected room without requiring you to stand near the thermostat to change settings.

It does not create independent HVAC zones. A single-zone system still heats or cools as one system, so prioritizing the bedroom can make another room less comfortable. A sensor cannot repair undersized ductwork, poor insulation, blocked vents or a badly balanced system.

Google Home and Matter: better interoperability, not full independence

Matter certification makes the thermostat more useful in homes that combine platforms. After setup, it can be controlled through Google Home and compatible Matter-enabled apps and voice assistants. That is a meaningful improvement for people who do not want every basic temperature command tied exclusively to one brand.

There is an important limitation: initial setup still requires Google Home. Matter also does not guarantee that every Nest-specific feature appears in Apple Home, Alexa, SmartThings or another Matter controller. Basic temperature and mode controls may be available while Google-specific schedules, energy programs, sensor selection, presence behavior and alerts remain dependent on Google Home.

Matter should therefore be treated as an interoperability benefit, not proof of fully local control or feature parity across platforms. If Apple Home is your primary smart-home system, verify the exact functions you need before buying.

HVAC compatibility: check before you install

Google says the fourth-generation thermostat supports most 24V systems, including gas, electric and oil equipment; forced-air and radiant systems; heat pumps; up to three heating stages; up to three cooling stages; heat pumps with auxiliary, alternate or emergency heat; fan control; and supported humidifier, dehumidifier and ventilation connections.

Google’s product page says the thermostat works with approximately 85% of systems. Older third-generation comparison material cited up to 95% compatibility. These figures should not be treated as a direct head-to-head measurement because Google may be using different definitions, wiring assumptions or product configurations.

Use the compatibility checker with your actual wiring before purchase. Pay particular attention to:

  • Heat pumps, especially systems with auxiliary, alternate or emergency heat.
  • Dual-fuel systems.
  • Dual-transformer systems with more than one R wire.
  • Zoned systems.
  • Whole-home humidifiers and dehumidifiers.
  • Ventilation equipment.
  • Systems with unfamiliar terminals or specialized controls.

Google’s compatibility and wiring guidance is the right reference for these cases. If the wiring is ambiguous, use a qualified HVAC professional rather than guessing from terminal labels.

Does it need a C wire?

Usually no, but sometimes yes. Google says the thermostat uses Power Sharing technology and works without a common wire in most homes. Its specifications say a C wire or Nest Power Connector may be necessary in limited cases, listed as fewer than 1% on the specifications page.

That percentage is not a guarantee for your installation. Power problems can appear as battery warnings, random disconnections, reboots, intermittent heating or cooling, or equipment that does not start reliably. Heat pumps and specialized systems deserve particular caution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A C wire supplies continuous power to the thermostat; it does not directly control heating or cooling. If the system requires one and the cable is absent, you may need a Nest Power Connector or new wiring. Do not purchase a Power Connector automatically: confirm the need through compatibility checking or professional diagnosis.

Installation: straightforward wiring is not the same as effortless setup

For a conventional compatible system, the physical installation is manageable. The Google Home app guides the process, and the box includes the display, base, trim plate, steel plate, screws and wire labels.

Independent coverage has found that a straightforward installation can be completed quickly, while also reporting that Google Home pairing may take multiple attempts. The distinction matters: wiring can be easy while app setup is frustrating.

If installation goes wrong

  • No power: Turn HVAC power off again, check the breaker and terminal seating, and confirm the wires are in the correct terminals.
  • Wiring or compatibility warning: Stop guessing and use Google’s compatibility guidance.
  • Repeated power warnings: Investigate whether a C wire or Nest Power Connector is required.
  • App pairing failure: Confirm the phone is on the intended Wi-Fi network, restart the thermostat and router, and repeat setup.
  • Heating works but cooling does not, or vice versa: Check terminal assignments and system type before continuing to operate the system.

Energy-saving features: potential, not a payback promise

Adaptive Eco, Seasonal Savings, Natural Heating and Cooling, Smart Ventilation and Savings Finder are designed to reduce unnecessary heating or cooling, improve scheduling, or suggest changes. They can help when a home routinely heats or cools empty rooms or maintains an unnecessarily narrow temperature range.

The result varies widely. A well-insulated home with an efficient HVAC system and careful manual scheduling may see little additional benefit. A home with predictable occupancy and frequent forgotten setbacks may benefit more. Climate, utility pricing, equipment efficiency, comfort preferences and the willingness to accept temperature changes all matter.

The thermostat is ENERGY STAR certified and may qualify for a utility rebate, but eligibility varies by provider, location and program date. Check your utility’s current rules rather than assuming the purchase will pay for itself.

How it compares

Model Best for Important distinction
Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen) Google Home users wanting premium hardware, learning and room sensing $279.99 U.S.; includes one Nest Temperature Sensor; Matter support; broad 24V compatibility
Nest Thermostat Buyers wanting basic smart scheduling at a lower cost Does not support Nest Temperature Sensors, according to Google’s comparison material
Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd Gen) Existing Nest owners finding a discounted or refurbished unit May be sufficient if the current Nest works well; lacks the fourth generation’s newer hardware and Matter support
ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium Room-sensor users wanting a broader non-Google feature set Strong sensor ecosystem and additional features; check current pricing and accessory costs
ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced Buyers seeking a lower-cost ecobee option More affordable route for households that do not need Premium features; sale prices change
Honeywell Home T9 Buyers preferring a conventional touchscreen and remote sensors Good fit for Honeywell Home users who do not want Google as the primary ecosystem

For reference, ecobee’s official catalog showed a certified-refurbished Smart Thermostat Premium at $219.99 and the Smart Thermostat Enhanced at $129.99 during an August 18, 2026 price check. Those are time-sensitive U.S. sale signals, not permanent prices. Honeywell’s official T9 page confirms remote-sensor and Wi-Fi support but did not provide a dependable current price at that time.

Who should buy it?

  • You already use Google Home or other Google smart-home products.
  • Your thermostat is in a poor location and a remote sensor would improve comfort.
  • You want an attractive physical control with a rotating ring and readable display.
  • You prefer automatic schedule learning to building every schedule manually.
  • Your HVAC system is a compatible 24V setup, or it passes Google’s compatibility check.
  • You want Matter interoperability but accept that Google Home remains required for setup and some advanced features.

Who should skip it?

  • You want the lowest upfront price.
  • Your current thermostat already controls the home comfortably and you have no need for a sensor, Matter or new HVAC support.
  • You want local-first operation or dislike dependence on a vendor’s cloud services.
  • You want Apple Home to be the primary platform without Google Home involvement.
  • You expect a remote sensor to solve a ductwork, insulation or zoning problem.
  • You are buying it mainly because you expect guaranteed energy savings.

Bottom line

The Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen) earns “the coolest yet” title within Google’s Nest line through its refined design, larger display, included sensor, learning features, Matter support and broader HVAC compatibility. It is the right premium choice when those improvements solve a specific comfort or convenience problem.

It is not automatically the best thermostat overall. At $279.99, it asks buyers to pay for design and ecosystem integration, while setup still depends on Google Home and advanced Matter behavior may vary by platform. Check HVAC compatibility first, especially for complex systems. If your existing thermostat works well, the fourth generation is a luxury upgrade—not a necessary one.
