Yes—Gemini for Home is available for early access in the United States, but joining the program does not activate it immediately. Google is inviting eligible homes in stages. Basic Gemini for Home voice-assistant features do not require a subscription; selected features, including Gemini Live, require Google Home Premium.
Before joining, note the biggest catch: Google says a home cannot switch back to Google Assistant after upgrading.

What is Gemini for Home?
Gemini for Home is Google’s smart-home intelligence system and voice-assistant upgrade for compatible Google Home and Nest speakers and displays. It is not simply the Gemini mobile app being installed on a Nest speaker.

Google currently lists the United States as an early-access country. For US users, the listed supported languages include English (United States) and Spanish (US).
Check your eligibility first
You have the best chance of enrolling if all of the following apply:
- You are in the United States and use a supported language.
- You are a member or manager of the relevant Google Home.
- You have the latest version of the Google Home app.
- Your speaker or display is on Google’s compatible-device list.
- Your device meets Google’s minimum firmware requirement.

Google says older speakers and displays support most Gemini for Home features, but not Gemini Live. Device compatibility therefore does not mean every device has identical capabilities.

- Speakers: Cast firmware 3.76 or newer.
- Displays: Fuchsia firmware 28 or newer.
Firmware updates are generally delivered to the device rather than installed through the enrollment screen, so an eligible model may still need time to update.
How to request Gemini for Home early access
- Sign in to Google Groups.
- Open Settings.
- Make sure “Add me to their groups” is enabled.
- Save the setting.
- Update the Google Home app.
- Open Google Home and tap your profile picture or account initial in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Home settings.
- Tap Early Access.
- Follow the enrollment prompts.
The Google Groups setting matters because Google says it must be enabled before you can sign up. Enrollment is a request for consideration—not an instant download or guaranteed immediate upgrade.

What happens after you join?
Google will notify you when Gemini for Home becomes available for your home. The setup notification is called “Introducing Gemini for Home.” Open it, tap Get started, and follow the setup instructions.
The upgrade applies at the home level. Once activated, everyone in that Google Home household can use Gemini for Home on eligible devices. Compatible devices added later can also use it, and Google says devices that become compatible later may switch automatically.
This change is not reversible: Google’s support documentation says that once a home switches to the Gemini for Home voice assistant, it cannot switch back to Google Assistant.
What is free and what requires Google Home Premium?
Basic Gemini for Home voice-assistant capabilities are available without a subscription. These include:
- Smart-home controls
- Media search and playback
- Alarms and timers
- Calendar requests
- Notes, lists, and reminders
- General questions
Google Home Premium is optional for those basic functions but required for selected advanced features. Google’s current US Store pricing, seen August 16, 2026, is:

Early Access is not Public Preview
Google uses these labels for different programs. Gemini for Home early access concerns the Gemini for Home voice-assistant upgrade and related features. Public Preview is a separate testing program for features in the Google Home app. Joining Public Preview is not a substitute for requesting Gemini for Home early access.

The Early Access option is missing
Check these items in order:
- Install the latest Google Home app.
- Confirm you are using the Google account connected to the intended home.
- Check that Google Groups allows you to be added to groups.
- Confirm that you are a member or manager of the relevant home.
- Check your home’s country and language settings.
- Verify that at least one speaker or display is supported.
- Update device firmware and reopen the app.
These checks cannot force access. Google’s rollout remains staged and invitation-based.
You joined but received nothing
That is not necessarily an error. Google says users will be notified when Gemini for Home becomes available for their home. Check the Google Home app inbox and notifications, keep the app updated, and wait for the rollout.
Setup fails after the invitation arrives
- Update the Google Home app.
- On Android, update Speech Recognition and Synthesis.
- Check your Wi-Fi and internet connection.
- Confirm that the app is using the intended Google Home.
- Check device firmware.
- Retry from the “Introducing Gemini for Home” notification or the app inbox.
Avoid deleting and recreating your home unless Google Support specifically tells you to do so; doing that can affect household membership and device assignments.

A device is missing after activation
Gemini for Home applies to eligible devices, not necessarily every third-party or unsupported product. Check the exact model and firmware against Google’s compatibility information.
Should you join?
Join early access if you want a more conversational smart-home assistant, manage several Google speakers or displays, or are comfortable testing a staged rollout and accepting an irreversible household-level change.
Waiting is sensible if your household depends on predictable command-based behavior, has privacy concerns about conversational AI, includes people who prefer Google Assistant, or does not want to pay for advanced features.
You do not need to buy a new speaker simply to obtain basic Gemini for Home access. Google lists several older devices as compatible. Consider new hardware only if you need coverage in another room, want newer hardware, or specifically need a feature unavailable on your existing device.
