Phil Gregory’s Best-Lawn Routine: Soil Care, Mowing and the Limits of the “Secret”

Phil Gregory’s reported best-lawn routine centres on soil care, feeding, frequent mowing and early weed control—not a guaranteed shortcut for every garden.

Phil Gregory of Morley, Perth, was reported as the winner of the Yates National Gardening League’s best-lawn competition, receiving the Championship Green Thumb Ring and $10,000 in prize money. His reported “secret” is not one product: it is a demanding routine built around soil care, close and frequent mowing, feeding and early weed control.

What Phil Gregory did to win

PerthNow’s 9 December 2025 report describes Gregory’s lawn as couch grass and says he uses a ruler to check its height, mows regularly and may mow daily during a period of intensive maintenance. It also reports that he waters on Mondays and Fridays. Those details describe his own approach in Morley; they are not a schedule or mowing prescription for other gardens.

Gregory’s core message is to care for the soil rather than rely on water alone: “If you don’t look after the soil, you can dump water on it and it just won’t keep green.” His five reported tips are:

  • Choose couch grass.
  • Look after and feed the soil.
  • Fertilise regularly.
  • Mow regularly.
  • Deal with weeds while they are small.

The reports give different estimates of the time involved. PerthNow says Gregory spends four to five hours a week tending the lawn; YourLifeChoices reports two to three hours weekly. The discrepancy is not resolved in the coverage. Both sources describe frequent mowing, while YourLifeChoices says he mows every day or two and PerthNow reports daily mowing during a serious maintenance period.

Why the routine is not a universal lawn-care plan

Gregory’s experience is a reported example, not a controlled comparison. The coverage does not establish that any single product or practice caused the competition result, or that his approach suits a different grass type, climate, soil or local watering restrictions. His Monday-and-Friday watering schedule, close mowing and couch-grass choice should be assessed against local conditions rather than copied automatically.

Gregory’s soil-first emphasis is a useful way to think about lawn care, but the reporting does not include an independent horticultural trial or an expert assessment. It also does not establish the competition’s complete official judging rubric. A national title is the reported outcome of the competition, not proof that one routine will produce the same result elsewhere.

The lawn food named in follow-up coverage

Follow-up stories identify Yates Click And Grow Dynamic Lifter Lawn Food And Soil Improver, 700 ml, as Gregory’s reported product choice. Realestate.com.au describes it as a hose-on product. These are journalistic descriptions, not independent tests or verification of the current formulation. Gregory’s reported use is not evidence that the product was responsible for his win or is required for a healthy lawn.

YourLifeChoices and realestate.com.au reported a $20 price, in December 2025 and April 2026 respectively. That is a dated reported price, not a current quote; price and availability can change. Check the product label and local retailer before buying, and follow the label’s directions for application.

What to take from Gregory’s example

For a homeowner, the practical takeaway is the sequence of attention: understand the lawn and its soil, feed appropriately, mow consistently, and tackle weeds early. The amount of mowing, watering and feeding needed depends on the grass and local conditions. Gregory has also described the work as something he enjoys: “You’ve got to spend some time, it’s not a chore, you’ve got to love doing what you’re doing.”
