For a buried-wire comparison, start with the exact PetSafe model and the eXtreme tier you would buy. Their published specifications describe different capacities and components, but do not establish which brand contains dogs more effectively or lasts longer.
Compare the specific kits, not just the brand names
PetSafe sells in-ground, wireless, and GPS fencing products; eXtreme Dog Fence’s comparison covers several wired-system tiers. A wireless circular boundary is not equivalent to a custom buried-wire loop. This comparison focuses on the cited PetSafe In-Ground Fence, model PIG00-13661, and eXtreme’s Standard, Pro Grade, and Max Grade systems. PetSafe’s fencing catalog distinguishes its in-ground, wireless, and GPS categories.
Specifications below are manufacturer claims, not independent test results. eXtreme’s system comparison lists its tier capacities and hardware; PetSafe’s In-Ground Fence product page describes the cited kit.

PetSafe’s published expansion figures are not uniform across its range. Its support page for the Basic In-Ground Fence says the 500-foot kit covers up to one-third acre and expands to 5 acres, and lists several model numbers, including PIG00-14582, PIG19-16412, PUL-275, and ZIG00-16969. Which system better fits your property?
Choose around the boundary shape and acreage
For a custom buried-wire layout, map the full loop and any areas you want to exclude before comparing kit capacities. PetSafe describes a customizable boundary and keep-out areas. eXtreme lists twisted dead-zone wire for Pro and Max, but not Standard. These features should be matched to the layout you need; the published specifications alone do not show which system will work better on a particular property.
If you are planning trenching or other yard work, settle the wire route before disturbing the ground, and verify the required wire length and installation instructions for the exact kit. The supplied manufacturer pages do not establish a comparable eXtreme installation-time estimate.

Consider the dog and collar fit
PetSafe’s cited product page gives a lower weight threshold and a neck-size range; eXtreme lists a broad recommended pet-weight range. These are each company’s stated criteria, not an individualized assessment of whether static correction is suitable for a particular dog. Confirm fit, age guidance, receiver details, and correction settings with the exact product documentation and, where appropriate, your veterinarian or a qualified trainer.
Weigh wire and included hardware against your plan
eXtreme’s published tiers differ in wire gauge and jacket thickness, and its Pro and Max listings include an external surge protector and twisted dead-zone wire. PetSafe’s cited kit includes a surge protector plus installation accessories and 500 feet of wire. A heavier-gauge wire specification is a hardware difference, not proof of greater containment effectiveness or service life.

PetSafe’s kit list includes a transmitter and adapter, receiver collar with an RFA-67 battery, flags, test-light tool, and manual, as well as the wire and installation parts noted above. eXtreme lists unlimited pets with additional collars sold separately. Confirm collar and battery compatibility for the exact kit; PetSafe’s cited collar uses an RFA-67 battery, while eXtreme lists 6-volt batteries, and those should not be assumed interchangeable.
What do the setup and warranty details mean?
PetSafe estimates one to two days for setup on the cited product page; its Basic In-Ground support page describes that model as a DIY weekend project. These descriptions are not directly comparable to an eXtreme installation estimate, which was not stated in the cited comparison materials.

eXtreme’s detailed warranty information says Standard kits have five-year coverage and Pro Grade and Max Grade kits have ten-year coverage. It describes defect coverage for the transmitter, collar, and surge protector, and excludes boundary wire. Its system comparison instead says ten years across all three tiers, so get the applicable written terms for the exact kit before buying. eXtreme’s competitor comparison is vendor-authored; treat its comparisons as the company’s claims, not independent validation.

- Identify the exact product. Record the PetSafe model number or eXtreme tier; do not apply one model’s acreage or warranty to an entire brand.
- Sketch the route. Measure the planned loop, gates, and keep-out areas, then verify the required wire length and the manufacturer’s acreage guidance for that specific kit.
- Check collar fit and contents. Confirm the dog meets the manufacturer’s size guidance, and check receiver, battery, number of collars, and included installation parts.
- Compare installation demands. Use the model’s instructions to understand wire placement and site work. PetSafe provides setup estimates for the cited system; the reviewed eXtreme comparison does not provide a matching time estimate.
- Get written commercial terms. Verify current price, return policy, warranty duration and exclusions, and the exact kit contents directly with the seller. Prices and product assortments can change.
PetSafe is worth comparing if its included kit components, customizable layout, or broader fencing range match your plan. eXtreme Pro or Max may merit comparison where the listed acreage or wire specifications better fit the proposed boundary. Neither recommendation establishes independent durability or containment results, and buyers needing a no-dig circular boundary should evaluate PetSafe’s separate wireless category rather than treating it as an in-ground equivalent.
