Wild Animals in Your Attic? Signs, Risks, and Humane Solutions

Droppings, gnaw marks, or repeated activity can signal attic wildlife, but they do not prove the species. Learn safe checks, urgent precautions, and humane exclusion steps.

Repeated noises, droppings, or damage may mean wildlife has entered your attic, but one clue rarely identifies the animal. Keep people and pets away, avoid touching animals or waste, and confirm the entry route before taking action. If a bat is inside the living area or anyone may have had contact with one, contact your local health department or animal control promptly.

How to tell whether an animal may be in your attic

Look for a pattern rather than relying on a single sound, stain, or dropping. Note when you hear noises or see activity, and inspect the outside of the building from a safe distance. Do not reach into roof spaces, wall cavities, or other hidden areas to investigate.

  • Droppings or gnaw marks: The CDC lists these as signs of rodent presence, but they do not by themselves confirm the species or show whether an animal is still there. See the CDC rodent guidance.
  • Possible bat activity: From a safe distance, watch suspected exit points around dusk. The CDC recommends observing where bats leave to help identify openings they use; do not approach or handle them. See the CDC bat guidance.
  • Repeated sounds or other signs: Record when they occur and where they seem to come from. Sounds alone are not a reliable species identification.

If you cannot confidently identify the animal or its access point without entering its space, ask local animal control, a wildlife professional, or the appropriate local authority for help.

What risks need an urgent response?

If a bat is found in the home

Do not touch or release it before speaking with animal control or your health department. The CDC advises contacting them for safe capture and testing advice. Bat bites can be small and difficult to notice, so promptly seek medical or public-health assessment if anyone may have had contact with the bat, including a possible bite or scratch. The CDC rabies guidance explains prevention, and its clinical screening guidance is for health professionals.

FIXTIMEN One Way Squirrel Door, 3"x3"x9" Black Wildlife Exclusion Device, Humane One Way Exit for Attic, Soffit, Chimneys & Vents, Stainless Steel Easy Install with 50cm Steel Wire (1 pcs)
  • Humane Wildlife Exit: This one way squirrel door provides a humane way to help wildlife leave attics, soffits, and wall openings through their existing entry point. A non-lethal solution designed to support safe animal removal around the home.
  • Standard Exclusion Design: Features a 3 x 3 inch opening with an extended tunnel structure commonly used for squirrel and small wildlife entry areas on roofs, siding, vents, and exterior structures.
  • Heavy-Duty Stainless Steel: Constructed from durable stainless steel with reinforced wire mesh, built to withstand outdoor weather conditions including rain, heat, wind, and seasonal exposure for long-term reliability.
  • Complete Installation Kit: Includes 1 exclusion doors, mounting screws, copper wire, cable ties, and 50cm Steel Wire Included. Accessories help secure placement over openings and reinforce installation around damaged areas.
  • Quick Installation:Simply position over the active hole and secure using included hardware. Ideal for attics, soffits, vents, chimneys, and siding gaps. The tunnel design encourages animals to exit naturally.

Rabies risk depends on the animal, location, and nature of contact. The CDC identifies bats, raccoons, skunks, and foxes among U.S. wildlife associated with rabies; an animal being in an attic does not, by itself, mean someone was exposed.

If there are rodent droppings or nesting materials

Rodent urine, droppings, and nesting material can expose people through contaminated air or contact. Do not dry sweep or vacuum droppings. Follow the CDC cleanup instructions, which include wetting rodent urine and droppings with disinfectant as directed. For extensive contamination or uncertain animal waste, get professional advice before cleaning.

Gallagher Solar Electric Fence Deer Foot Plot Kit, Up to 1 Acre Coverage
  • Protect Food Plots from Deer Damage | Electric fencing creates an effective psychological barrier that prevents deer from entering food plots and destroying crops before they reach full nutritional maturity.
  • Complete Electric Fence Kit for One Acre | Includes solar fence energizer, posts, reels, poly tape, ground rod, tensioners, warning signs, and all essential hardware needed to build a reliable deer exclusion fence.
  • Solar Powered and Field Ready | Lithium solar fence energizer provides consistent power without the need for utility access, making this kit ideal for remote hunting properties and off-grid food plot locations.
  • Two Tier Fence Design for Maximum Deterrence | Dual fence layout disrupts deer depth perception, making the barrier appear wider and more intimidating, reducing jump attempts and fence challenges.
  • Non-Lethal Wildlife Control for Hunters and Landowners | Humane electric fencing discourages deer without injury, helping protect crops while supporting responsible wildlife management and long term hunting success.

Keep people and pets away

Do not handle a wild animal, dead or alive, or its waste with bare hands. Wash hands after contact with wildlife or areas where wildlife may have been. The CDC provides additional wildlife safety guidance.

How to get an animal out humanely

  1. Identify the animal and its routes. Look for entry and exit points from a safe distance. Do not block an opening while an animal may still be inside.
  2. Check for young and local restrictions. A one-way device can separate adults from young if used at the wrong time. Laws, permits, protected species, and appropriate removal seasons vary by location, so check with local wildlife authorities when species or timing is uncertain.
  3. Choose a species-appropriate way out. A one-way excluder may allow an animal to leave but prevent re-entry, but it is not right for every species or situation. It must be fitted and monitored appropriately; seek qualified local help if unsure.
  4. Confirm the animal has left before sealing the opening. After safe exclusion, repair the access point using a suitable, durable material for that opening.

Additional precautions for bats

The CDC recommends watching at dusk to locate bat exits and describes using an appropriate loose one-way barrier so bats can leave before openings are sealed. Bats can use openings as small as ¼ inch. The CDC says openings larger than a dime can be caulked and gives screens, chimney caps, and draft guards as examples of barriers. It cautions against bat-proofing from May through August if young could be trapped. Some bats are endangered or need special care, and local rules apply, so consult local authorities before exclusion if you are uncertain.

WCS Pro-Cone One-Way Bat Excluder - Clear Polycarbonate Wildlife Exclusion Device for Bats, Flying Squirrels & Birds - Reusable, Humane Exit Cone for Attics, Soffits & Eaves (Not for Gray Squirrels)
  • ONE-WAY EXIT DESIGN - Animals push through the wide end to exit, but the tapered shape narrows toward the outside, making re-entry nearly impossible. The smooth interior prevents bats from gripping the walls to crawl back in. Install at a downward angle so gravity works against them. No flaps or moving parts to fail
  • SIZED FOR BATS & SMALL FLYING ANIMALS - Works great for bats, flying squirrels, and similar-sized animals. NOT designed for mice (too small to trigger exit) or gray squirrels (too large, they will push back in). Opening tapers from 2-1/4" to 1-1/2". Know your pest before you buy
  • CLEAR POLYCARBONATE CONSTRUCTION - See-through design lets you confirm animals have exited. UV-resistant material stays crystal clear and will not yellow with age. Reusable season after season - just remove, clean, and redeploy at the next location. Made in USA
  • NOT FOR GRAY SQUIRRELS - Gray squirrels are too large and strong - they will push their way back through the cone. If you have gray squirrels, check out our larger excluder options or one-way doors instead. This cone is sized for bats and smaller animals only
  • SIMPLE INSTALLATION - Mount over the entry hole at a downward angle using 3/8" staples, 1" screws, or silicone caulk. Seal edges with copper mesh or foam backer rod. Leave in place for minimum 3-5 days to ensure all animals have exited, then seal the hole permanently. Do NOT remove during bat birthing season - contact your local wildlife agency for timing

For rodent problems

After animals are safely out, seal holes to help prevent new infestations. The CDC also provides rodent trapping guidance. Poison baits can endanger people and animals; use them only according to label instructions.

Choosing exclusion materials and preventing re-entry

Choose materials only after identifying the animal and the opening. The Humane Society guide describes hardware cloth, vent covers, netting, and one-way excluders as wildlife-conflict tools; CDC separately discusses screening and sealing for bat exclusion. Neither source presents a single material as a solution for every animal or entry point.

BestNest Bat Exclusion Tube
  • One-Way Bat Trap – Each exclusion tube acts as a one-way exit valve, allowing bats to safely leave your home, attic, or structure while preventing them from re-entering.
  • No Re-Entry Design – Innovative plastic sleeve collapses inward when bats attempt to return, creating an effective, humane barrier that eliminates re-infestation without harming wildlife.
  • Humane Bat Relocation – Encourages bats to relocate naturally and safely. When installed properly, these tubes guide bats out of your structure while keeping them excluded for good.
  • Durable, Weather-Resistant Construction – Made from sturdy PVC and flexible plastic for long-lasting performance in outdoor conditions. Ideal for use on attics, soffits, eaves, or rooflines.
  • Easy Installation & Effective Results – Simple to mount using sealant or tape (not included). Use multiple tubes for larger infestations to ensure all bats exit quickly and safely.
  • Match the material to the opening: A vent, roof gap, or other access point may need a different fit and barrier. Hardware cloth or vent screening may be options where appropriate.
  • Do not seal animals inside: Make sure wildlife can leave before permanently closing the route. Use a one-way excluder only when it suits the species and can be monitored.
  • Consider safe installation: Work at height or around a suspected nest can create hazards. Use a qualified professional if you cannot install a barrier safely.
  • Reduce access and attractants: Address conditions that could invite wildlife back, without assuming a repellent, sound device, or one repair will work for every species.

The Humane Society wildlife-conflict guide offers general prevention options, not a substitute for species-specific or local advice. For bats, possible exposure, protected wildlife, or uncertain cleanup, contact the relevant local animal control office, health department, state wildlife agency, or a qualified wildlife professional.
