Start with a dry, protected area and a few sturdy, low-risk features; fit them to your birds and available space rather than following a one-size-fits-all blueprint.
Plan around the run and the flock
Enrichment works best as part of a secure, usable run—not as a substitute for adequate housing, care or confinement. First look at the space you already have. Identify a dry patch for scratching and dust-bathing, clear routes for birds to move, and enough open floor for them to land without crowding.
Choose features for the birds that will use them. Age, body size, mobility, flight ability, flock dynamics and the run layout all affect what is safely reachable. Keep structures conservative in height, particularly for young, heavy-bodied or inexperienced birds. That is a cautious design approach, not a tested height specification: the guidance does not establish one ideal height or layout for every backyard flock.
Choose features that support different behaviours
Rather than relying on a single “chicken playground” toy, offer a few kinds of opportunity. UK government laying-hen welfare guidance lists straw or shaving bales, perches, platforms, pecking objects and dust-bathing boxes as enrichment examples. These can support movement, roosting, scratching, pecking and dust-bathing when birds can reach and use them safely.

Build perches and platforms for safe access
Perches let chickens roost and rest. Extension guidance also notes that they may give lower-ranking birds a way to avoid some aggressive encounters. But a perch can create risk if birds have to make awkward flights or misjudge a landing.
Set perches and platforms where birds have a clear approach and landing area. Avoid unstable supports, sharp edges, splinters, exposed fasteners, abrupt jumps between levels and arrangements that funnel birds into one another. UK welfare guidance advises careful placement of perches, tiers and ramps to prevent collisions and falls, and cautions against structures so high that birds struggle to use them or risk injury.

There is no universal backyard-playground perch height or spacing established by the guidance. Choose modest, reachable levels for the birds in your flock, then observe how they use them; a layout suitable for one flock or run may not suit another.
Make room for scratching and dust-bathing
Include an accessible, dry place where birds can move in loose material and dust-bathe. Dust-bathing is a normal behaviour, and extension guidance notes that chickens may continue the motions even when they cannot access a dust bath. A dust-bathing area is useful enrichment, but it should not be treated as a way to prevent feather pecking, control parasites or resolve flock behaviour problems on its own.

Protect the enclosure while adding enrichment
New structures should not create openings or weak points in the run. UMN Extension’s mobile-hut example warns that chicken-wire openings can be large enough for some ground predators to reach through and uses hardware cloth on the lower portion. Hardware cloth can therefore be a useful material for a chicken run, but that example is not a complete predator-proofing specification.
Consider the predators in your area and inspect the whole enclosure—not just the playground feature—including openings, edges and access points. A perch or platform should not compromise a secure boundary or create a reach-through gap.

Keep the playground clean, stable and usable
Use sturdy, cleanable materials that support birds comfortably and do not cause pain, distress or injury. Keep food and water access clear, inspect supports and fasteners for movement or damage, and remove contaminated or deteriorating material. Watch whether every bird can reach useful features and whether a structure causes crowding or conflict. If it is ignored or creates problems, adjust or remove it rather than assuming more equipment will help.
The UK government’s Code of practice for the welfare of laying hens and pullets states: “Environmental enrichment can improve bird health and welfare during rearing and in lay, by reducing disturbances, aggression, injurious pecking, fear responses and stress.” The guidance describes enrichment as a way to encourage activity and normal foraging and to give birds opportunities to escape confrontation and find refuge; it does not make a particular backyard feature a guarantee against aggression or injury.
