For most Samsung freezers in the United States, Samsung recommends a setting of -2°F. Its UK guidance gives -18°C as a general recommendation. Check your freezer’s manual if its controls or guidance differ, and use a thermometer to confirm the compartment temperature rather than relying on the display alone.
Which temperature should you use?
Samsung US Support says the ideal freezer setting is -2°F on most models. The same page says frozen food should be kept below 0°F, describing that as the food-safety threshold quoted from USDA guidance. The setting recommendation and threshold are different: -2°F is Samsung’s suggested control setting for most US models; below 0°F is the stated threshold for frozen food.
Samsung UK gives -18°C as general freezer guidance. Because the regional pages frame their advice differently, do not combine the figures into a single universal recommendation. Use the guidance for your region as a starting point, then follow the manual for your exact model and its available control range.

How to adjust the setting
Samsung freezer controls are not identical across models. Some panels change the temperature with repeated presses of a Freezer button; some connected models allow adjustment through an app. The available temperatures and display conventions also vary, so there is no button sequence that applies to every Samsung freezer.

- Identify your model. Find the model information on the appliance and locate its manual through Samsung Support.
- Check the model’s control instructions. Use the manual to confirm which panel control or app setting changes the freezer temperature and what values the model supports.
- Set the target shown in the manual. If the model’s instructions align with the regional guidance above, use the appropriate recommendation; if they differ, follow the model-specific instructions.
- Allow the compartment to stabilize before judging the result. Samsung says to wait 28 hours after an adjustment before checking the temperature with a thermometer.
How to verify the actual temperature
The number on the panel is a setting; a thermometer checks the temperature in the compartment. Samsung recommends placing a thermometer between packages of frozen food. Do not put it in water: Samsung warns that glass can shatter in the cold.
- Place a freezer thermometer between frozen food packages.
- Keep the doors closed and allow up to eight hours for an accurate reading, as Samsung advises.
- If you changed the setting, wait 28 hours before measuring again.
- Compare the reading with the model-appropriate target and adjust only as directed in the manual.
A basic freezer thermometer is an optional way to check whether the compartment has reached the intended temperature.

When to use Power Freeze
Power Freeze is a temporary rapid-freezing mode. Samsung says it increases fan speed to accelerate freezing and uses additional energy. Its run time depends on the model, so check the manual for how to activate and deactivate it.
Samsung’s convertible-refrigerator guidance describes a model-specific case in which Power Freeze can keep the freezer as cold as possible for up to 50 hours; it advises activating the feature at least 20 hours before adding a large quantity of food. A separate Samsung troubleshooting page says Power Freeze can remain active for up to 72 hours on some models. These are not universal timings. Turn the feature off when the extra rapid freezing is no longer needed, if your model requires manual deactivation.

If the freezer is too cold
Before requesting service, check the settings and operating conditions. Samsung identifies several possible contributors to overcooling:
- The temperature setting may be colder than intended.
- Power Freeze may still be active; Samsung says it can remain on for up to 72 hours on some models.
- The ice maker may affect freezer temperature. If no water line is connected, Samsung advises turning the ice maker off.
- An environment below 50°F can contribute to overcooling, according to Samsung.
If the freezer continues to run too cold after these checks, use Samsung’s overcooling troubleshooting guidance to request service.

If the freezer is not cooling well
Check the basic causes Samsung lists before seeking service:
- Confirm the appliance has power.
- Make sure the doors close fully and the door seals work properly.
- Check that the refrigerator is not in Cooling Off or demo mode.
- Remove items blocking airflow inside the appliance.
If the freezer remains too warm after these checks, Samsung directs users to request service through its cooling-issues troubleshooting page.
