When and where is the Borrowed Earth opening?
The opening takes place Saturday, October 24, 2026, from 2–5 p.m. at Art Omi, 1405 County Route 22, Ghent, New York 12075. Admission is free and the event is open to all ages. Art Omi encourages visitors to RSVP, but walk-ins are welcome.

The installation stands outdoors in the Sculpture & Architecture Park, so visitors encounter it as part of the site rather than in a conventional gallery room. The program is built around the work itself and its relationship to the surrounding land.
What is Borrowed Earth made of?
Tatiana Bilbao ESTUDIO built Borrowed Earth from rammed earth using locally sourced soil. Rammed earth is formed by compacting soil into a solid construction element; here, that material system becomes a group of columns that function simultaneously as architectural objects and landscape features.

Art Omi describes the columns as intentionally temporary. Seasonal weather will gradually erode them, allowing the material to blend back into the ground. The project therefore treats weathering as part of the design rather than as damage to be prevented.
Why are the columns designed to erode?
Borrowed Earth is organized around designed impermanence: the idea that an architectural work can belong to land, time and natural cycles without aspiring to remain unchanged. As rain, wind, freezing conditions and other seasonal forces alter the rammed earth, visitors can observe time through physical material change.

This approach shifts the usual construction priority from maximum durability to a deliberate life cycle. The columns begin as built forms, occupy the landscape, and are expected to return to it. Art Omi frames that process through the relationship among people, time and place, emphasizing that the installation is part of an environment rather than separate from it.

Who performs at the opening?
Lita Vinueza and Sonic Liberation Devices
Lita Vinueza performs outdoors beside Borrowed Earth at 3 p.m. using custom-designed electronic instruments. Art Omi identifies Vinueza as an Ecuadorian-American anti-disciplinary artist and the founder of Sonic Liberation Devices (SLDs), a collective and research platform focused on experimental instruments and open-source technologies.

Tatiana Bilbao ESTUDIO
Tatiana Bilbao founded her Mexico City practice in 2004. Art Omi describes the studio as humanistic and collaborative, combining research, design and responsible construction while considering social, cultural and environmental impact. The studio is led by Tatiana Bilbao with partners Catia Bilbao, Juan Pablo Benllure, Mariano Castillo, Alba Cortés and Soledad Rodríguez.

Because the work is installed outdoors, the opening offers an immediate view of how rammed earth can operate at the boundary between building material and terrain.
