Dalhousie architecture students will turn an everyday pedestrian corridor in Halifax into an outdoor investigation for Nocturne 2026. Their temporary installation, (Un)Seen City: Systems Between, slows and redirects movement so visitors can examine the decisions, relationships and infrastructure that shape public space. It is open Saturday, October 17, from 6:00 p.m. to midnight beside the Dalhousie School of Architecture.
What (Un)Seen City: Systems Between does
The installation is part of Nocturne 2026’s Embodied City theme. Rather than presenting architecture as a finished object to view from a distance, it changes how people move through a familiar route. Visitors are invited to ask four practical questions: What systems are present? Why do they exist? Who do they serve? How do they influence the way people move, gather and experience this place?

Nocturne’s official project description says the work “invites visitors to experience a familiar pedestrian corridor in an unfamiliar way.” The intervention creates pauses and shared points of attention, turning an individual walk into a collective act of inquiry. In the students’ framing, the corridor is not simply a neutral path. It has been produced by systems, decisions and relationships that continue to influence how the city is inhabited.

How the student-led construction model works
A self-assembled committee
The Dalhousie School of Architecture Nocturne Committee is a self-assembled student group. Each year it develops and constructs a new temporary public installation in response to Nocturne’s curatorial theme. That model gives students responsibility for translating an abstract idea into a full-scale intervention that has to function in a live public setting.
The credited team
The official listing credits the Dalhousie Architecture Students Association, Adriana Lilley Osende, Christina García, Wilson Faught, Mahmoud Istanbouli and Claire MacDonald. Architecture49 is listed as a supporting organization.

- Authentic, Real-World Construction Experience: The Pitsco True Scale House Framing Kit delivers a realistic construction model rather than simple assembly play. Students build a true 1:16 scale house model using 485 precision-cut balsa wood pieces, following professional-style house plans and construction methods aligned to real building practices. This architectural framing kit helps learners understand stud framing, scale lumber, and structural design in a way traditional model kits cannot.
- Blueprint Reading & Skill-Building: Designed as a hands-on architecture lesson for ages 14+, this model house framing kit guides students through a structured learning progression. Learners begin by interpreting blueprints, measuring to scale, and understanding architectural drawings before cutting, framing, and assembling the structure. The challenge builds accuracy, focus, and confidence, making it ideal for homeschooling, high school engineering projects, and blueprint reading practice tools.
- Choice-Based Design & Structural Comparison: Unlike most balsa wood house kits, this architectural model making supply allows students to choose between two realistic roof systems: truss or hip. Comparing a truss building kit to a hip roof framing model gives learners firsthand experience with real-world structural approaches used in residential construction, reinforcing problem-solving, interpretation, and decision-making while maintaining authentic construction standards.
- Classroom-Ready & Collaborative by Design: This classroom building kit is designed for individual or paired work, supporting collaboration and communication as students divide tasks, measure materials, and assemble the wooden house frame model together. Instructions are student-facing, with minimal teacher prep required beyond gathering shared tools. Projects can be stored safely during multi-week builds, making it well suited for extended classroom use.
- Career Pathways in Construction & Design: The True Scale House Framing Kit connects hands-on building to real careers in construction, architecture, engineering, drafting, and skilled trades. By applying construction terminology, reading plans, and working with a realistic construction model, students gain exposure to Career and Technical Education (CTE) construction concepts and civil engineering foundations, positioning this as a powerful architecture study kit and vocational training resource.
The published information explains the concept and visitor experience but does not specify the installation’s dimensions, budget, construction materials or fabrication schedule. Those details should not be inferred from the project’s temporary, architectural format.
What visitors are being asked to notice
- Movement: The familiar route is interrupted so walking becomes a conscious activity rather than an automatic commute.
- Public-space decisions: The installation prompts visitors to consider how a corridor’s layout and rules affect gathering, access and circulation.
- Relationships: The work connects physical surroundings with the social and organizational systems that support them.
- Shared attention: Moments of slowing down allow observations to become a collective experience rather than a private glance.
This is why the project’s title separates “unseen” from “seen.” The students are not claiming that the city’s systems are literally invisible; they are making routinely overlooked structures easier to question.

- PLAN, DRAFT, BUILD: Learn the real-world architectural workflow in four fun steps. Plan the layout on the grid, draft crisp lines with the tools, decorate with textures, and build the structure vertically. It is a rewarding project that teaches logic, patience, and creative confidence.
The companion project at Architecture49
(Un)Seen City: Spaces Between accompanies the Dalhousie installation at Architecture49. The satellite work expands the inquiry from the systems shaping one specific place to the spaces that connect the wider city. Together, the projects move from a close reading of one pedestrian corridor toward a broader consideration of how urban places relate to one another.
How this fits the committee’s recent work
The committee’s 2025 Nocturne installation, Extraction, provides context for its continuing method, but it is not evidence that Systems Between uses the same materials or mechanics. Extraction asked visitors to move material between sites and contribute it to a new built form, using a pavilion to reveal links among extraction, labor, consumption and environmental impact.

Both projects treat construction as a way to make an urban process tangible. In Systems Between, the published emphasis is on movement, observation and the systems embedded in an everyday route; the project description does not identify a comparable material-transfer activity.
Related 2026 work: a different way to show a layered city
Visible Cities by Ada Denil is a separate 2026 project, not part of the Dalhousie installation. It uses five laser-engraved acrylic panels whose overlapping views represent multiple realities occupying one location. The comparison is useful because both projects treat the city as layered physical and social space, but their visitor experiences differ: Systems Between redirects movement through a corridor, while Visible Cities uses overlapping visual panels to present spatial perspectives.

A practical visit plan
- Arrive at the Dalhousie School of Architecture, 5410 Spring Garden Rd., on Saturday, October 17.
- Enter the pathway from Spring Garden Road or DaCosta Row. The installation runs along the east side of the school and extends toward the Provincial Courthouse.
- Allow time to move slowly. The work is designed to interrupt habitual movement and create moments of shared attention, not to be passed as quickly as an ordinary walkway.
- Use the route’s accessible setting and bring family members if appropriate; the official listing identifies the installation as wheelchair accessible and family friendly.
- If you want to continue the inquiry beyond this corridor, visit the companion (Un)Seen City: Spaces Between installation at Architecture49.
Why the project matters for architecture and construction
(Un)Seen City: Systems Between demonstrates how architectural construction can operate as a temporary public investigation. The students are not only designing an object; they are reorganizing a real route so that ordinary infrastructure, circulation patterns and social relationships become subjects of attention. That approach makes the construction process part of civic learning: the built intervention changes what people notice about the city while they are using it.
Nocturne’s official listing provides event hours and location, but it does not publish attendance figures, performance measurements or an independent evaluation of impact. The project’s documented outcome is experiential: a familiar corridor is reframed so visitors can question how urban space is made and used.
