Off-gassing is the release of gases from solids or liquids. In homes, it commonly refers to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by products and building materials. VOCs are a broad class of chemicals—not one substance, and not a guarantee of a particular health risk. The practical response is to identify likely sources, reduce emissions where possible, and bring in fresh outdoor air when conditions allow.
What is off-gassing?
Off-gassing occurs when a material or product releases gases into the surrounding air. Some emissions happen while a product is being used or stored; some building materials and furnishings can emit pollutants more or less continuously. EPA lists paints, varnishes, cleaning products, air fresheners, furnishings, flooring, pressed-wood cabinetry, adhesives, and hobby products among possible indoor sources. EPA’s introduction to indoor air quality and its historical overview of VOCs describe these sources.
VOC is a category covering many different chemicals. A broad label such as “low-VOC” or “VOC-free” does not, on its own, establish that a product has no emissions or addresses every chemical. The relevant question is what the claim or certification measures and whether it applies to the material’s intended use.
Is off-gassing harmful?
It depends on the chemical, the amount released, how long and how much a person is exposed, and individual susceptibility. EPA identifies possible short-term effects of some indoor air pollutants, including irritation of the eyes, nose, or throat, headache, dizziness, and fatigue. Some indoor air pollutants may have long-term effects, but responses differ and the concentrations and exposure periods associated with particular health outcomes are not always certain. EPA’s indoor-air guidance does not support treating every instance of off-gassing as dangerous.

A noticeable odor can be a reason to inspect a recent product or renovation and consider ventilation, but smell is not a measurement. Odor alone cannot identify the chemical, establish its concentration, or determine the health risk. Likewise, the presence of a product that can emit VOCs does not prove that it is causing a problem.
How long does off-gassing last?
There is no single reliable timeline for all materials and products. Emissions vary with the product’s chemistry and quantity, use and storage conditions, and the ventilation available. The EPA guidance cited here does not set a universal number of days after which every new furnishing or building material can be assumed safe. Odor fading is not a dependable substitute for a product-specific emissions measurement.

EPA’s Total Exposure Assessment Methodology (TEAM) Study, completed in 1985, found about a dozen common organic pollutants at levels 2 to 5 times higher indoors than outdoors in the homes studied. That historical result applies to the pollutants and homes in that study; it is not a current universal indoor-to-outdoor ratio for every VOC or home. A 1987 study of 15 building materials and consumer products detected about 10–100 organic compounds off-gassing from each material analyzed. That range describes the materials and method in that study, not a count that applies to all products. The study is indexed in EPA’s HERO record.
How do I reduce VOCs in my home?
EPA’s general principle is to address the source first: “Usually the most effective way to improve indoor air quality is to eliminate individual sources of pollution or to reduce their emissions.” The Inside Story: A Guide to Indoor Air Quality pairs source control with practical ventilation measures.

Find and reduce likely sources
- Consider recent flooring, furniture, pressed-wood products, paints, adhesives, cleaners, air fresheners, and hobby products. Their presence alone does not prove a harmful exposure; consider recent use, the room’s ventilation, and whether concerns recur.
- When choosing materials for a project, select the least-emitting option that adequately serves its purpose. Check the emissions information and the scope of any independent certification rather than relying only on odor or a general marketing claim.
- EPA’s 2014 retrofit protocol gives examples of criteria and programs used to evaluate emissions, including California Department of Public Health Specification 01350, Carpet and Rug Institute Green Label/Green Label Plus, Green Seal GS-11, GREENGUARD Children and Schools, and SCS Indoor Advantage Gold. Ventilate during work and product use
For painting, sealing, finishing, or similar work, follow the product directions, including instructions about ventilation and when occupants should stay away. Where appropriate, isolate the work area and exhaust air outdoors. Allow odors to dissipate before re-occupancy when the applicable protocol calls for it. EPA’s 2014 protocol covers work practices and ventilation for home energy upgrades.
When outdoor conditions permit, opening windows can increase fresh-air exchange. Bathroom and kitchen fans that exhaust outdoors can also help remove pollutants; a fan that merely recirculates indoor air does not provide the same outdoor exhaust. Choose the right response for a persistent source
If a suspected source is confined to one room and cannot be removed, EPA’s retrofit protocol says local exhaust ventilation may be considered. If source reduction and ventilation do not resolve persistent odors or complaints, assessment by a qualified professional may be useful. The protocol says VOC testing is unnecessary in most circumstances, so testing is not usually the first step when a likely source can be addressed directly.

Do not try to speed up emissions by heating an occupied building. EPA’s retrofit protocol advises against a post-occupancy “bake-out”: VOCs may be absorbed by other interior materials, and building components may be damaged. Source control and appropriate ventilation are the safer starting points.
