ODOT installed drone-in-a-box systems on the roof of Longworth Hall in Cincinnati in March 2026, with construction monitoring for the Brent Spence Bridge Corridor project identified as their planned near-term use. The docked drones can be launched remotely, collect project information, fly pre-programmed routes, and return to their dock for charging. ODOT says the aim is to provide timely information for planning, inspection, and project management—not that measured savings or safety improvements have already been demonstrated.
What ODOT installed and where
ODOT’s DriveOhio Uncrewed Aircraft Systems Center reported installing drone-in-a-box systems on the roof of Longworth Hall in Cincinnati in March 2026. The agency said the systems would soon support construction monitoring for the Brent Spence Bridge Corridor project. The installation location and intended use are described in ODOT and DriveOhio’s March 2026 announcement.

The corridor project spans an eight-mile stretch of I-71/75 in Kentucky and I-75 in Ohio, according to the project team’s project description and releases. Longworth Hall is therefore a fixed base near the work, not a description of the full project area the drones may cover.

How a drone-in-a-box system works
A drone-in-a-box pairs an aircraft with a permanent docking site. In the workflow ODOT describes, the drone can be launched remotely to collect project information, follow a pre-programmed route autonomously, and return to its dock for charging. DriveOhio’s earlier reports also describe a base where the drone can return for recharging and data offloading.

That setup can reduce the need to dispatch a pilot to the aircraft’s launch point for every planned collection mission, but it does not mean the system operates without human oversight. ODOT’s announcement describes remote launch and programmed flight; it does not specify staffing, approval procedures, airspace authorizations, or how collected imagery is processed or shared.
What the systems are intended to contribute to construction
ODOT says early drone use can provide accurate, real-time information to streamline site planning, inspection, and project management. In construction, recurring aerial information can help teams see site conditions and progress across areas that are difficult to assess from a single ground-level viewpoint. The agency’s statement is a rationale for the deployment, however, not a published measurement of this project’s performance.

ODOT has not published a flight count, collection schedule, quantified time or cost savings, or measured safety and schedule effects for the Longworth Hall installation. The announcement also does not identify the drone’s manufacturer or model, the image-processing method, or the data-access and privacy policies. Those specifics should not be inferred from the term “drone-in-a-box.”

- 2023: DriveOhio reported initial research and planning for remotely deployed drone operations to support corridor construction monitoring and incident management in its 2023 annual report.
- 2024: DriveOhio reported the Ohio UAS Center’s first drone-in-a-box purchase and said future integration into the corridor project was planned in its 2024 annual report.
- December 2025: ODOT reported a first system installed at the National Advanced Air Mobility Center of Excellence, with integration into a large ODOT construction project planned for the following year. The announcement does not establish that this was the same system as the Longworth Hall installation; see ODOT and DriveOhio’s December 2025 update.
- March 2026: ODOT reported the Longworth Hall roof installation and planned corridor construction-monitoring use.
- March 16, 2026: The corridor project timeline lists construction plans finalized.
- April 1, 2026: The timeline lists demolition beginning at Longworth Hall, starting with removal of its 1960s addition and then a portion of the original building.
- May 8, 2026: The project timeline lists the corridor project groundbreaking.
The construction dates are listed on the corridor team’s project timeline. They place the installation in the run-up to major corridor work, but do not by themselves establish when the drones began flying or how often they are used.

The available ODOT announcement confirms the installation location, intended project use, and broad operating concept. It does not name the vendor or aircraft model, report completed missions, or quantify operational results. It also does not explain flight frequency or duration, image-processing methods, data access, privacy safeguards, or airspace authorization details. Until the agency provides those particulars, claims about performance or system specifications would be premature.
