Jihlava Municipal Arena—also known as Horácká multifunkční aréna—is a four-building sports and civic campus on the edge of Jihlava’s historic center in Czechia. Designed by CHYBÍK + KRIŠTOF, the completed complex combines a flexible arena hall with public paths, hospitality, fitness, food and drink, a hotel and a rooftop running track. Construction began in July 2023, lasted 26 months and was reported complete in October 2025.
What is Jihlava Municipal Arena?
The project is more than a replacement hockey rink. It is a multipurpose urban complex intended to connect daily city life with sport, concerts and events. Its site sits beside Smetana Gardens and the neighboring university, at the boundary of Jihlava’s historic center. The design links those surroundings through open-air walkways, planted spaces and a visually open ground floor.

CHYBÍK + KRIŠTOF describe the scheme as “a porous urban campus opening its multipurpose infrastructure to everyday public life and play.” In the architects’ original project announcement, founding architects Ondřej Chybík and Michal Krištof called it “a social campus for the city – used by the people, thereby designed for the people.”
Who designed the arena, and what was the design idea?
A four-building campus
The 2020 design brief organized the complex as four buildings: two existing structures and two new ones. They are connected by open-air routes and green areas rather than functioning as an isolated object. The arrangement is intended to extend the city center toward the park and university and to encourage movement between public, sports and event spaces.

An adaptable main venue
The new arena is planned for hockey, exhibitions, concerts and other events. Its ground-floor frontage is transparent, allowing activity inside to remain visible from the street. That visual openness is central to the project’s civic ambition: people can use the surrounding campus even when they are not attending a ticketed event.
The red triangular envelope
A red metal grid wraps the arena, with apposed triangular forms. The project announcement says the geometry refers to Jihlava’s origins; that is the architects’ stated design framing, not an independently established historical conclusion. The façade is therefore one expression of the concept, rather than the whole point of the building.
What is in the complex besides the hockey rink?
- A 29-room hotel.
- A fitness center and public gym.
- Food and drink venues.
- A public rooftop running track.
- Outdoor stepped seating between buildings, creating a route between Tolstého Street and the park.
- Spaces capable of hosting concerts, exhibitions and civic events as well as sport.
The combination is designed to support activity throughout the day and across different event calendars. The arena hall is the largest component, but the campus model gives the project uses that do not depend on a game or concert.

How many people can Jihlava Municipal Arena hold?
GEMO, the general contractor, reports capacity for 5,581 spectators in sports configuration and 7,416 places for concerts. StavbaWeb gives slightly different figures—5,650 for sports and more than 7,400 for concert or exhibition configurations. The available sources do not explain the discrepancy, so the numbers should not be treated as interchangeable seating guarantees. Capacity changes with the event layout, stage, sightlines and circulation requirements.
| Configuration | Reported capacity | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Sports | 5,581 spectators | GEMO project information, 2025 |
| Concerts | 7,416 places | GEMO project information, 2025 |
| Sports | 5,650 spectators | StavbaWeb feature; publication date not shown on the reviewed page |
| Concerts or exhibitions | More than 7,400 | StavbaWeb feature; configuration-dependent |
When was it built?
- CHYBÍK + KRIŠTOF presented the project concept in 2020.
- An early July 2020 announcement proposed a 2021–2023 construction schedule. Those dates were a plan, not the completed timeline.
- Construction and demolition began in July 2023.
- GEMO reports a 26-month construction period.
- Peikko’s project reference dates completion to October 2025.
The reviewed sources do not establish a formal public opening-event date with certainty. Completion or handover information should therefore be distinguished from the date of the first game, concert or civic program.
Who paid for it, and what did it cost?
GEMO identifies the City of Jihlava as investor, with support from the Vysočina Region and the National Sports Agency. GEMO also reports that the project was delivered within a stated budget of 1.9 billion CZK. That is the contractor’s report, not an independently audited final-cost finding.

GEMO says heat recovered from ice cooling is reused for hot water, underfloor heating and cooling through ventilation. The contractor also describes LED displays and an LED perimeter around the ice. These are project-specific technical features reported by the contractor; the available material does not establish broader energy savings, operating performance or an independently verified sustainability rating.
Why the campus approach matters
Traditional arenas often become inactive outside event hours. Jihlava’s scheme addresses that risk spatially: public circulation, a gym, hotel, food venues, outdoor seating and a rooftop track occupy the same campus as the main hall. The park and university connections make the building part of a larger pedestrian network, while the transparent base exposes activity instead of presenting a blank event box.

That strategy explains why the project is best understood as civic infrastructure as well as sports architecture. Hockey provides a major anchor, but the intended audience includes residents using the gym, runners on the roof, hotel guests, concertgoers, students and people simply moving between the historic center and Smetana Gardens.
