Black walnut is prized for its rich heartwood, distinctive grain and workable strength. For a woodworking or construction project, the key choices are the grain pattern and the way the lumber was dried: air-dried boards keep a stronger contrast between dark heartwood and cream sapwood, while steam-treated kiln-dried boards have darker sapwood and may have less vivid heartwood.
What does walnut wood look like?
Black walnut heartwood ranges from deep purple-brown to reddish-tan, often set against cream-colored sapwood. That contrast can be a prominent design feature or something to minimize, depending on the project and how boards are selected.
Black walnut trees commonly reach 100 feet or more, with trunks 3 feet in diameter, according to WOOD Magazine’s February 26, 2025 update. Those are descriptive figures from the magazine’s article, not a separate forestry dataset.
What grain patterns can you find in walnut?
Walnut’s figure varies with the part of the tree and the way the board is cut. Compare boards by the visual effect you want:

- ✔️ Wood Name: Black Walnut
- ✍️ Botanical Name: Juglans nigra
- 🔥 Dried: Yes, Kiln Dried
- 💧 Moisture Content: 6-7%
- 🧱 Several blanks are shown to indicate the range of color/grain to expect.
- Burl: Intricate, irregular figure formed around a burl.
- Crotch wood: Strong, branching figure from where the trunk divides into limbs.
- Cathedral pattern: Arched grain shapes that create a repeating cathedral-like effect.
- Quartersawn: A straighter, more linear presentation than the sweeping cathedral figure.
These are different appearances rather than a ranking of quality. Choose boards as a set when the project depends on a consistent grain flow or a deliberate contrast between pieces.
How does drying affect walnut’s color?
Air-dried walnut retains deeper heartwood tones and cream-colored sapwood. Steam pretreatment during kiln drying darkens the sapwood, but can also dull the heartwood color. Neither look is inherently better: the choice depends on whether the project calls for pronounced light-and-dark contrast or a more blended tone.

Is walnut easy to work with?
Walnut is relatively hard, but it can still be hand-worked and holds crisp cut details. WOOD Magazine describes it this way: “Though relatively hard, walnut won’t put undue strain on your machinery or muscles when hand-working it.” It also accepts finishes readily.
Woodworking creates fine dust. Walnut dust can irritate airways, so use effective dust collection and supplement it with a respirator or dust mask. Avoid breathing the dust, particularly during sanding and machining.

How can you make walnut glue lines less visible?
Dark glue can help a glue line blend into walnut rather than stand out as a pale stripe. WOOD Magazine names Titebond II Dark Wood Glue as an option for walnut glue-ups. Check the current product listing and local availability before buying; the recommendation is for reducing the visibility of a joint line, not a guarantee that every joint will disappear.

For a pore-filling finish, WOOD Magazine describes a method using Danish oil and 400-grit wet-dry abrasive. It is one approach, not the only suitable finish for walnut.
