NuBau Labs is a Horizon Europe-funded research and demonstration project conceived by Arup and Queen’s University Belfast. Its European consortium plans a pilot factory in East London to test, remanufacture and certify structural components salvaged from buildings that must be demolished. The project is planned, not yet a proven factory operating at commercial scale.
What NuBau Labs plans to do
The project proposes a route for recovering structural components and preparing them for use in new buildings. Its stated sequence matters: first consider retaining, retrofitting or directly reusing a building; salvage for the factory is intended only after those options have been exhausted and demolition is necessary. The aim is to retain more value in usable components than would be retained by reducing them to aggregate. That is the project’s framing, not a claim that aggregate recycling is never appropriate.

At the planned factory, components would be tested, remanufactured and certified for reuse. These steps are central to the proposal: reclaimed structural elements need evidence that they are suitable for their next application. The report does not specify the testing protocols, acceptance criteria or certification standards the project will use.

The first pilot factory is planned for the River Thames area of East London. The reported project budget is €4 million in Horizon Europe funding. Construction Management reports that Arup and Queen’s University Belfast conceived the project. Named participants include GXN, Politecnico di Torino, Banagher Precast Concrete, The Stonemasonry Company, Pilbrow & Partners, Wrocław University of Science and Technology, North Adriatic Sea Port Authority – Ports of Venice, Keltbray, Gardiner & Theobald, and the Engineers Reuse Collective.

- Valued Carpenter Pencil Set: You will get 2 pcs solid carpenter pencils with 26 piece 2.8 mm refills, 1 replaceable sharpener, 1 plastic storage box.The complete carpenter pencils combination allows you to finish your work faster and more easily
- Deep Hole Marker Pencil: The deep-hole construction pencils adopts 45mm elongated tip design, which is more convenient to mark in the small hole or in other tight areas that other carpenter markers cannot reach
- Carpenter Pencils with Sharpener: The sharpener is screwed into the top of the work pencil, which won't get lost either. Built-in pencil sharpener that keep the lead with pointed and smooth to Improves line of sight in fine work
- Stronger Solid Lead: This work pencil is matched with a 2.8 mm thick lead , which is much thicker and stronger during the drawing process of construction work, it will not break or damage easily
- Marks on Various Surfaces: 3 colors solid construction pencil can marks on various surfaces, such as metal, plastic, wood, paper etc. Ideals for woodworkers, contractors, craftsmen, builders, merchants and masons
The Institution of Structural Engineers identifies Arup director Kerry Greeves as leading NuBau Labs and describes its focus as material reuse, remanufacturing and low-carbon logistics. A Wrocław University of Science and Technology team member’s public post describes the effort as a three-year project launched on 1 September 2026. That schedule is attributed to the participant; it is not independently confirmed by the project report.
ReVault: an early planned demonstration
One of the first systems planned for demonstration is ReVault, an Arup-developed floor system that uses reclaimed concrete to create new floors. Construction Management reports that ReVault has 70% lower embodied carbon than conventional floor systems. That is a project comparison reported by the publication, not a verified result that can be applied to all reclaimed concrete or building projects.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
The report does not provide the comparison’s baseline floor system, assessment boundary, calculation method or independent verification. Those details are necessary to understand what the 70% figure includes and how comparable the systems are. Until they are available, the figure should be treated as an indicative reported claim about ReVault, not a general measure of the carbon benefit of concrete reuse.

NuBau Labs brings together recovery, engineering, remanufacturing and logistics in a proposed process that could make structural reuse easier to assess and deliver. Its practical test is whether recovered components can be identified, transported, verified and prepared for safe use in new construction while retaining enough value to justify the effort. Certification and low-carbon logistics are therefore as important to the model as the salvaged material itself.

The available project reporting does not state the factory operator, opening date, processing capacity, detailed milestones, component acceptance rules or technical testing methods. It also does not establish how the demonstration would be replicated in other cities. These are significant unknowns: a pilot can show whether a process works in a particular setting, but it does not by itself prove that the same economics, supply of components or logistics will work at scale elsewhere.
