What are neighbourhood health centres?
They are intended to bring more care and support together in local settings, closer to where people live. The first-wave model announced by government brings together GP, urgent treatment and pharmacy services. Broader support, potentially including debt advice, employment and family services, is envisaged over time. NHS England National Medical Director Claire Fuller said the centres should make joined-up care closer to home easier to access, particularly for working-class communities.

The government’s stated ambition is 250 centres by 2035, with the first 120 expected by 2030. In March 2026, the government announced 27 first-wave upgrade centres and said they were expected to be open by 2027. A parliamentary answer said proposals from all regions had been received by the 28 May 2026 deadline and were still being assessed; decisions had not been finalised by 11 September 2026.
