Nest Hello Doorbell Reboots or Goes Offline When Pressed: Causes and Fixes

A Nest Hello that reboots only when its button is pressed usually has a chime-related power problem. Learn how to test the chime, transformer, wiring, and internal battery safely.

If a first-generation Nest Hello works normally until someone presses its button, the problem is usually a power transition, not ordinary Wi-Fi. Pressing the button activates the indoor chime and changes the doorbell’s power path. On an older Hello, a failing internal backup battery is a leading possibility—but an undersized transformer, incorrect chime connector, loose wiring, or faulty mechanical chime can produce the same symptom.

The fastest safe test is to search the doorbell’s settings in the Nest app for Indoor chime and turn it off temporarily. If the Hello stays online when the mechanical chime is disabled, the chime-related power event is implicated. On an aging first-generation Hello, that strongly supports internal battery or power-buffer degradation.

What the failure looks like

The characteristic sequence is:

  1. The camera is online and live video works normally.
  2. Someone presses the physical doorbell button.
  3. The indoor mechanical chime rings weakly, attempts to ring, or behaves abnormally.
  4. The Hello’s status light goes out or changes as the unit restarts.
  5. Live video stops and the Nest app reports the doorbell offline.
  6. The doorbell reconnects automatically after several seconds or, in some cases, up to about a minute.

The outage duration is not fixed. It depends on the transformer, chime, wiring, battery condition, Wi-Fi, and whether the Hello completes a full restart.

A failure synchronized precisely with pressing the button is more suggestive of a power problem than a router problem. Rebooting the router is useful later if other Nest devices are offline or the doorbell cannot reconnect after a normal restart.

Why pressing the button can reboot the camera

In a mechanical-chime installation, the button does more than send a visitor notification. Pressing it changes the circuit so the indoor chime can activate. A wired Nest doorbell uses a chime connector to help provide continuous power and protect the chime from damage. The doorbell also needs to remain powered during that transition.

Google identifies insufficient power, incompatible transformers, loose wiring, missing or incorrectly installed chime connectors, and chime faults as possible causes of wired doorbell instability. See Google’s doorbell compatibility guidance and chime troubleshooting guidance.

Repeated owner reports describe the first-generation Nest Hello’s internal battery as a backup power source during chime activation. Those reports also describe the battery eventually failing, with the Hello rebooting whenever the button is pressed. This is a common community-reported cause, not an official Google admission of a widespread defect. See the Google Nest Community discussion and the long-running owner thread.

The fastest diagnostic test: disable Indoor chime

This is the most useful non-invasive test because it is reversible and directly removes the event that appears to trigger the reboot.

  1. Open the Nest app.
  2. Open the Nest Hello’s settings.
  3. Find Indoor chime and turn it off. The exact menu location or wording may vary by app version.
  4. Press the physical doorbell button several times, allowing the camera time to reconnect between tests.

How to interpret the result

  • The Hello stays online: the chime-related power transition is probably involved. On an older Hello with an otherwise stable transformer and wiring, a weak internal battery becomes the leading diagnosis.
  • The Hello still reboots: check transformer output, loose terminals, chime-connector installation, heat, moisture, and possible hardware failure.
  • The chime buzzes, rings continuously, or does not complete its stroke: suspect the chime circuit or connector before blaming the battery.

Disabling the chime does not repair the underlying fault. It is a practical workaround: the existing mechanical chime will not sound, so use phone notifications or visitor announcements on compatible Nest speakers and displays.

Check the transformer, chime connector, and wiring

Transformer requirements

For North American installations, Google lists 16–24 V AC for the original wired Nest Doorbell and for newer wired models. The wired 2nd- and 3rd-generation models additionally require a transformer rated at 10–40 VA. Confirm the requirements for the exact model and region in Google’s compatibility guide.

Find the transformer near the indoor chime, breaker box, basement, crawl space, or utility area. A label showing the correct nominal voltage does not prove that the transformer can maintain stable power under load. It may be old, overloaded, damaged, poorly connected, or shared with other equipment.

A voltage reading with the doorbell disconnected is also not conclusive. The important question is whether power remains stable when the chime activates. Have an electrician perform an operating-condition measurement if you are not qualified to test low-voltage doorbell circuits.

Chime connector checks

Turn off power at the breaker before opening the chime box or changing wiring. Check that:

  • The connector is the correct generation for the doorbell.
  • Every wire is firmly secured.
  • Exposed copper is not touching another terminal.
  • The connector is not touching the chime’s moving parts.
  • The chime is not buzzing, sticking, ringing continuously, or failing to complete its movement.

The first-generation Nest Hello chime connector is not compatible with the wired 2nd- or 3rd-generation models. Do not casually remove or bypass the connector: incorrect wiring can cause buzzing, unexpected chimes, equipment damage, or unsafe behavior. Google’s chime troubleshooting page covers these warnings.

Confirm which Nest doorbell you have

The advice is most strongly associated with the Nest Hello / Nest Doorbell (wired), first generation. Do not assume every Nest doorbell uses the same battery, connector, app, or power design.

  • First-generation Nest Hello: the older model associated with repeated owner reports of button-triggered reboots and internal-battery degradation.
  • Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd generation): different hardware and a different chime-connector requirement.
  • Nest Doorbell (battery): can operate on its battery or connect to wiring for charging; it is not equivalent to the original always-wired Hello.
  • Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd generation): Google’s current wired model in the U.S. and managed through Google Home rather than the Nest app.

The current wired model requires a compatible 16–24 V AC, 10–40 VA transformer and chime. Google’s product page states that it uses Google Home, not the Nest app or Nest website.

Use the status light as supporting evidence

The light cannot identify the failed component by itself, but it can help confirm what happened. Google’s status-light guide describes a restart as the light turning off and then returning to solid white. A pulsing blue light generally indicates the device is ready to connect when it is not connected to the app or Wi-Fi. A yellow warning light on a wired Nest doorbell indicates insufficient power; see Google’s low-power guidance.

Observation What it suggests
Reboots only when pressed Power transition, chime circuit, or internal battery
Stays online with Indoor chime disabled Chime-related power demand; likely battery degradation on an old Hello
Yellow light or low-power warning Insufficient power, wiring, or transformer issue
Offline at random times too Broader power, Wi-Fi, heat, moisture, or hardware problem
All Nest devices are offline Router, internet, or household power issue
Chime buzzes or rings continuously Wiring or chime-connector problem

Restart safely, but do not factory-reset first

A restart is reasonable after checking the symptom. For the original wired Nest Doorbell:

  1. Remove the doorbell from its base with the release tool, a paper clip, or a thumbtack.
  2. Leave its wires connected.
  3. Press and hold the restart button near the top of the back for approximately 10 seconds.
  4. Release it when the light turns off and allow the doorbell to restart.

Do not confuse the rear restart button with the front visitor button, and do not hold the button longer than necessary. Google’s restart and factory-reset instructions explain the distinction. A factory reset erases personalized settings and video history and requires setup again. It cannot repair a weak battery, inadequate transformer, loose wire, or defective chime circuit.

When the internal Hello battery is probably failing

The battery diagnosis is strongest when all of these are true:

  • The Hello is stable during ordinary live viewing and recording.
  • It reboots reliably when the button is pressed.
  • Disabling Indoor chime stops the reboot.
  • The transformer is within the specified range and appears capable of supplying the installation.
  • The chime connector is correct, secure, and clear of moving parts.
  • The issue developed after years of otherwise normal operation.

That pattern points to a weakened internal battery or related power-buffering circuitry in the first-generation Hello. It remains a diagnosis based primarily on owner reports and elimination of external causes—not a guaranteed component-level finding.

Choose the least-invasive fix that fits

1. Leave Indoor chime disabled

This is the safest immediate workaround. The Hello may remain online because it no longer has to support the mechanical-chime event. You lose the traditional indoor chime, but phone alerts and compatible Nest speakers or displays can provide announcements.

2. Correct the installation

Replace or repair the transformer when it is outside specification, old, overloaded, or unstable. Correct loose terminals, damaged cable, an incorrect connector, or a failing mechanical chime. A new transformer can fix inadequate supply, but it will not revive a failed Hello battery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Attempt an internal battery repair

iFixit documents a Nest Hello battery-replacement procedure. This is an invasive repair, not routine maintenance. Opening the sealed unit can damage the front panel, adhesive, seals, connectors, or electronics and may reduce weather resistance. A replacement cell also will not solve a faulty transformer, chime, or power circuit.

4. Replace the doorbell

A current wired model is the cleaner long-term option when the first-generation Hello is aging or the repair risk is not worthwhile. Verify the transformer, chime, connector, and app requirements before buying; installing a new doorbell on inadequate wiring can reproduce the failure.

The battery model may suit a home with incompatible wiring, but it requires charging and has different battery and cold-weather behavior. It should not be treated as a guaranteed equivalent to a continuously powered mechanical-chime installation.

When to call an electrician or support

Use a qualified electrician when the transformer is unidentified, wiring is nonstandard or shared with multiple devices, you cannot safely isolate power, or voltage is outside the specified range. Stop and seek help if you see overheating, arcing, melted insulation, corrosion, or water intrusion.

Also consider temperature and moisture. Google says extreme cold can shut down chime, video, or Wi-Fi functions on wired 2nd- and 3rd-generation models below −4°F / −20°C; extreme heat and direct sunlight can also cause shutdowns. A problem limited to freezing weather or hot afternoon sun is less conclusive evidence of a failed Hello battery. For broader connectivity symptoms, consult Google’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.
