Reconstruction of both eastbound and westbound lanes on Interstate 80 between Ogallala and Roscoe is complete, and traffic has returned to its normal configuration, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation’s October 16, 2026 update. Finishing work continues, temporary lane closures remain possible, an 11-foot width restriction is still in effect, and NDOT anticipates final project completion in December 2026.

What is open on I-80 now

The project covers reference posts 125.64 through 132.89 in Keith County, a distance of approximately 7.24 miles. Both directions have received their reconstructed pavement. Unlike the earlier construction phase, motorists are no longer generally routed into a two-lane, two-way configuration on one side of the interstate.

Drivers should still expect work-zone conditions. Crews are removing temporary pavement and completing grading, culverts, seeding, electrical work, guardrail and sign installation. Those activities may require temporary lane closures even though the permanent travel lanes are open.

Restrictions that still matter

11-foot width limit

An 11-foot width restriction remains in place. Vehicles, trailers and loads wider than 11 feet should verify the current restriction and any required routing before departure. The restriction is especially important for oversized-load operators because a normal traffic configuration does not mean every vehicle dimension is permitted through the work area.

Temporary closures and changing conditions

Finishing operations can move from one location to another. A lane that is open during one trip may be temporarily closed while crews work on pavement removal, drainage, lighting, barriers or signs. Allow extra time, watch advance-warning signs and follow flaggers or other traffic-control devices.

When will the project be finished?

NDOT’s latest forecast calls for anticipated completion in December 2026. This is the expected end of the remaining construction and closeout work, not a promise that every temporary closure will disappear on a particular day. Weather, field conditions and the sequence of finishing activities can affect the schedule.

The December forecast supersedes the earlier schedule announced March 26, 2026, which anticipated completion in November. That March plan expected traffic to shift on April 13 into two-lane, two-way operation on the eastbound lanes while westbound reconstruction proceeded. The October update reports that this major phase is complete and normal traffic has returned.

How traffic was handled during reconstruction

During the main work phase, westbound traffic used median crossovers and temporary ramps served Exit 126 (Ogallala/Grant). The temporary speed limit was 65 mph, and the 11-foot width restriction applied. That arrangement was expected to remain until October 2026, but it has now been replaced by the normal lane configuration while closeout work continues.

Advice for drivers and wide-load operators

For ordinary passenger vehicles

  • Reduce speed near workers, equipment and temporary traffic-control devices.
  • Expect short-notice lane closures during grading, drainage, electrical and roadside work.
  • Stay in the designated lane and avoid entering closed shoulders or work areas.
  • Buckle up and put phones down while driving.

For trucks and oversized loads

  1. Measure the complete vehicle and load width before leaving.
  2. Treat the 11-foot limit as active unless NDOT or current field signs state otherwise.
  3. Check the latest restriction information and confirm whether a permit, escort or alternate route is required.
  4. Allow additional time for a temporary closure or traffic-control change.

NDOT’s safety reminder is direct: motorists should drive cautiously in and near work zones, buckle up and put phones down. Normal traffic flow reduces the need for crossovers, but workers and construction equipment remain present until closeout is finished.

Project purpose and location

NDOT says the project’s purpose is “to preserve the transportation asset, improve the reliability of the transportation system, and perpetuate the mobility of the traveling public.” The work is in Keith County on the Ogallala-to-Roscoe segment, between reference posts 125.64 and 132.89.
