The October 15, 2026 U.S. release reports $2,818.8 billion in total business inventories for August, up 0.4% from July. The latest building-material retail-dealer observation is $89,170 million ($89.170 billion) for July, not seasonally adjusted, while its seasonally adjusted index is 113.2 (October 2024 = 100). October 15 is the publication date—not the reference date for either inventory series.
What the October 15 release covers
The geography is the United States. The Census Bureau’s October 15 release calendar provides broad business-inventory data through August 2026, while the cited building-material dealer series runs through July 2026. Reading the report as an inventory snapshot “on” October 15 would therefore mix a release date with earlier measurement periods.

The broad measure covers retail trade, wholesale trade and manufacturing. The Census Bureau describes Business Inventories as “the only source of monthly data on total business activities of retail trade, wholesale trade, and manufacturers.” It measures goods owned by firms at cost; fixtures, equipment, supplies and goods located outside the United States are excluded.

Headline inventory figures
| Measure | Reference period | Reported value | Adjustment and scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total U.S. business inventories | August 2026 | $2,818.8 billion | Up 0.4% from July 2026; includes retail, wholesale and manufacturing |

| Building-material retail-dealer inventory index | July 2026 | 113.2 | Seasonally adjusted; October 2024 = 100 |
The dealer dollar series and the index describe the same general retail-dealer channel in different ways. The dollar figure is a nominal end-of-month level without seasonal adjustment. The index removes seasonal effects and expresses July’s level against an October 2024 base of 100; a reading of 113.2 is 13.2 index points above that base.

Are inventories rising or falling?
Broad business inventories
Total business inventories rose 0.4% from July to August 2026, according to the Census Bureau figure released October 15. That is a month-to-month change in the combined retail, wholesale and manufacturing measure, not a building-material-only change.
Building-material retail dealers
The July dealer index of 113.2 supplies the seasonally adjusted direction signal. The accompanying $89.170 billion figure is a level for July and is not seasonally adjusted. A single level cannot establish whether stocks rose or fell from the prior month without a comparable earlier observation; the index is the appropriate cited indicator for describing the current seasonally adjusted position.

What the numbers do not show
Dollar inventories are not a direct count of lumber, cement, fixtures or other physical units. Changes in prices, product mix and the cost at which goods are recorded can move the dollar total even when quantities do not change. Physical-volume conclusions require price and mix adjustments that are not supplied by these figures.

For the wholesale lumber and other construction-material measure, the Census Bureau definition reproduced in the FRED series is “the value, at cost, of merchandise on hand and available for sale at the end of the reference month.” That wording establishes three boundaries:

- On hand: the merchandise must be held by the business at month end.
- Available for sale: the measure concerns saleable inventory rather than equipment, fixtures or operating supplies.
- At cost: the reported dollars reflect recorded acquisition cost, not a current resale-price estimate.
Those boundaries matter when comparing a merchant wholesaler with a retail dealer or with the all-business total. Each channel captures a different position in the supply chain.
Why the figures must not be added together
Do not add the $89.170 billion dealer figure to the $2.8188 trillion business-inventory total. The broad total includes multiple industries and uses August 2026 as its reference month; the dealer figure covers a narrower retail channel and uses July 2026. They also differ in seasonal treatment and series construction. Adding them would double-count activity rather than produce a national building-material inventory total.

Use the measures as separate comparison axes:
- Channel: retail dealer, merchant wholesale or all business activity.
- Unit: dollars for inventory levels versus an index for seasonally adjusted direction.
- Adjustment: seasonally adjusted or not seasonally adjusted.
- Reference period: July 2026 for the dealer measures and August 2026 for broad business inventories.
Price context from the same October 15 reporting
Building-material prices increased 0.4% in September 2026 and were up 5.5% year over year, according to National Association of Home Builders data reported October 15. These are price movements, not inventory movements. They help explain why a dollar-valued inventory series can change without an equivalent change in physical stock, but they do not quantify how many units dealers held.
A careful way to use the release
- Label the date correctly: call October 15 the release date and identify July or August as the reference month.
- Choose the matching scope: use the all-business figure for economy-wide inventory, the dealer series for building-material retail, and the wholesale definition for merchant inventory.
- Pair level and direction: read the $89.170 billion dealer level alongside the 113.2 seasonally adjusted index rather than treating either as a physical quantity.
- Keep prices separate: report the 0.4% monthly and 5.5% annual price changes as inflation context, not as evidence that inventories accumulated.
- Compare like with like: for a trend, use the same series, adjustment method and reference-month spacing in both periods.
What this means for construction businesses
For contractors and distributors, the release provides a macro signal rather than a warehouse count. The 0.4% August increase indicates that total business inventories were higher than in July across the three covered sectors. The July dealer readings show the level and seasonally adjusted position of building-material retail inventories, but they do not reveal individual-market availability, product-specific shortages or the stock held by a particular supplier. Those decisions still require company-level reports with matching dates, units and product categories.
