Ormond Desaru will occupy 9.1 acres of beachfront land in Phase 2 of the Desaru Coast master plan in Johor. Desaru Beachfront Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of ECM Libra Group, owns and is developing the property. Ormond Group will manage and operate it under the Ormond brand.

Why Ormond is targeting the middle of the market
ECM Libra Group chief executive Gareth Lim said Desaru’s current offer is “quite bifurcated,” with high-end resorts at one end and outpost hotels at the other. In his view, a substantial middle segment remains underserved. Ormond Desaru is therefore being positioned to widen access rather than to compete as either a luxury resort or a budget property.

Post Company, HL Design Group and Philippe Villeroux are named as the design team. The report identifies them as the team behind The Chow Kit, an existing Ormond hotel. How the site fits into Desaru Coast
Ormond Desaru is planned next to The Westin Desaru within the wider 4,000-acre Desaru Coast master plan. Desaru Development Holdings, a Destination Resorts and Hotels subsidiary under Khazanah Nasional, manages the master-plan context.

Desaru Coast is presented by Destination Resorts and Hotels as an investment destination intended to accommodate a diverse mix of hospitality and property concepts. Ormond’s own corporate profile similarly describes a portfolio of hospitality brands with distinct positioning and purpose. The new resort would add a branded, family-focused mid-market option to that broader destination mix rather than create a standalone tourism enclave.
What the announcement means for travellers and the local market
For families
If delivered as announced, the combination of a large two-bedroom suite, kids’ club, main pool, beach access and multiple dining venues should allow families to spend more of a stay on-site. The 2029 target is still several years away, so room booking dates and operating details are not available yet.
For Desaru Coast’s hotel supply
A 396-key addition is substantial for a destination whose existing offer is described as concentrated at the high and outpost ends. Ormond’s stated strategy is to fill the gap between those formats. Whether it succeeds will depend on the final daily rate, room mix, transport access, staffing and the facilities delivered at opening.

A 300-person ballroom, meeting rooms and an event lawn could broaden Desaru Coast’s appeal for weddings, corporate retreats and social events. Event planners will need to wait for published floor plans, package terms and capacity details beyond the ballroom.
