First identify whether your nail gun is pneumatic, cordless, gas-powered or powder-actuated, then follow the safety and troubleshooting instructions for its exact model. A jam, incorrect fasteners, feed trouble or worn parts can stop nails from driving; pneumatic tools may also be affected by pressure, hose size or lubrication. Disconnect or isolate the tool as its manual directs before inspecting it, and leave persistent faults or internal repairs to an authorized service center.
Before troubleshooting, identify and isolate the tool
Nail guns do not all use the same power source or maintenance procedure. Pneumatic pressure, air hoses and oil advice apply only to the relevant pneumatic models; they are not cordless-tool troubleshooting steps. Find the model number and consult its manual before adjusting, clearing or servicing the tool.
- Use the exact manual’s isolation procedure before inspection or jam clearing.
- For the Metabo HPT NT50A5, the manual directs users to disconnect the air hose and remove all nails before maintenance or jam clearing.
- Do not exceed the pressure limit stated for your tool, and do not open or repair internal components unless the manufacturer authorizes it for that model.
If the nail gun cycles but does not drive a nail
Start with checks the manual permits: look for a jam, confirm that the magazine contains the specified nail type and dimensions, and inspect the feeder as directed. The Metabo HPT NT50A5 and NT65A5 manuals list a damaged feeder or weakened feed spring as possible causes. If the tool is pneumatic, compare supply pressure with the model’s stated range. The NT50A5 manual also lists depth adjustment, lubrication, driver-blade wear and piston O-ring condition among possible causes of weak or slow driving. These are model-specific possibilities, not a diagnosis for every nailer.
If driving is weak, slow or inconsistent
Check pneumatic pressure against the model specification
Check the regulator and air supply against the exact nailer manual; do not increase pressure beyond its limit. For the Metabo HPT NT50A5, the manual specifies 70–120 psi and says not to exceed 120 psi. That range applies to the NT50A5, not to nail guns generally.

#1 Best Overall
- Long life maintenance-free motor to keep from staining the work surface
- Tool-free depth-of-drive adjustment with detents for proper setting of nail heads
- Tool-free jam release mechanism for easy nail removal
- Rear exhaust to keep contaminates away from work
- Drives 18 gauge nails from 5/8 in. to 2 in. length
Follow the model’s lubrication instructions
Lubrication requirements differ. The NT50A5 manual specifies metabo HPT pneumatic tool lubricant. By contrast, DEWALT warns that oil buildup in oil-free systems can restrict air volume and flow, leading to reduced power, slow cycling or skipped fasteners. Do not add oil to an oil-free tool unless its model-specific instructions call for it.
Consider the hose if the problem appears at higher speed
If a pneumatic nailer works at ordinary speed but struggles when nailing faster, the Metabo HPT NT65A5 manual advises checking the air hose’s inside diameter and using a larger hose where appropriate. Follow that tool’s specifications rather than assuming the same remedy applies to other models.

Backed by NEU MASTER's 2-year warranty: we send new replacements, not repair service. NOTE: Air compressor NOT included.
If nails skip, bend or jam
Check that the nails match the exact type and dimensions listed in the manual; similar-looking collated nails are not necessarily interchangeable. Inspect the magazine and feed mechanism only as the manual permits. Metabo HPT’s NT65A5 troubleshooting guidance includes the nail feeder, ribbon spring, O-ring and driver blade among possible checks for intermittent feeding or jams. Damaged internal parts and recurring jams need service rather than repeated clearing attempts.
NT50A5 jam-clearing procedure
This sequence is specific to the Metabo HPT NT50A5; do not assume another model uses the same mechanism.
Rank #3
- NAILER: 21 degree plastic collated framing nailer
- APPLICATIONS: Great for flooring and framing, truss build-up, window build-up, sub flooring, roof decking, wall sheathing and housing construction
- LIGHTWEIGHT: At only 7. 5 lbs and well-balanced allowing for ease of maneuverability and less user fatigue
- SELECTIVE ACTUATION: Allows for quick changes between sequential and contact nailing with the flip of a switch
- TOOL-LESS DEPTH ADJUSTMENT: Depth adjustment to countersink or flush drive into a variety of materials
- Disconnect the air hose and remove all nails.
- Release the lock lever and open the guide plate.
- Remove the jammed nail with a slotted-head screwdriver.
- Close the guide plate and latch it.
The NT50A5 manual recommends contacting an authorized service center if jams happen frequently.
If the pneumatic nailer leaks air
Where the air escapes can help narrow down the fault, but the following examples come from the DEWALT DW325PL troubleshooting chart and are not universal diagnoses:
Rank #4
- AWARD: Rated the Pro Preferred Nailer for 12 years running (2014 - 2025) by Builder and Developer Magazine
- FASTENERS: 16-gauge finish nails in lengths ranging from 1-in up to 2-1/2-in
- TRIGGER: Selective actuation switch lets the user easily select bump fire or sequential fire modes
- LIGHTWEIGHT: Only 3.7 lbs and well-balanced for minimal fatigue and increased maneuverability
- DEPTH ADJUSTMENT: Tool-free depth of drive adjustment helps to provide a professional finish when fastening into varying materials
- Top cap: The chart lists loose cap screws or a worn gasket or O-ring.
- Exhaust: It lists seal damage or debris.
- Around the nose while at rest: It lists worn O-rings.
- Nose leak when actuated: It lists a damaged bumper.
The DW325PL chart names repair kits for that tool family. Match any replacement parts to the exact model, and use authorized service for persistent leaks or repairs requiring internal disassembly.

Do not apply pneumatic pressure, hose or oil checks to a cordless tool. For the DCN690, DEWALT’s UK support page, updated November 25, 2025, directs owners to consult the model’s troubleshooting guide and contact a local service center if the problem remains unresolved. For other cordless models, use the equivalent manufacturer support page and manual.

When to stop and get service
Stop troubleshooting when the manual directs service, the fault persists after its permitted checks, or internal parts appear damaged or worn. Metabo HPT says repairs to the NT50A5 should be performed by trained service personnel using supplied or recommended parts. The manufacturer also recommends authorized service for recurring jams or persistent problems. DEWALT directs owners to a local service center for DCN690 problems that its troubleshooting guidance does not resolve.
