Linkage Mechanism Designer and Simulator is a focused, free tool for laying out and animating two-dimensional mechanical linkages before you build them. It can help you test a crank, rocker, slider, gear train, chain, cam, or walking mechanism quickly—without starting in a large professional CAD package.
Its strength is also its boundary: Linkage primarily answers “Will this geometry move as intended?” It does not replace 3D part modeling, manufacturing drawings, load calculations, tolerance analysis, or structural simulation.

What Linkage is—and what it is not
Linkage was created by David Rector and is documented as a program for designing, editing, and simulating two-dimensional planar mechanisms. The original Hackaday coverage from October 2021 described the software as an approachable alternative to high-end CAD for mechanism experimentation.

That makes Linkage useful at the front end of a project, where you are still deciding pivot locations, link lengths, travel, and motion. Mechanical design has several different questions:
- Kinematic design: Does the mechanism move through the required positions?
- Geometric design: Are the links, pivots, guides, and paths arranged correctly?
- Dynamic analysis: What forces, accelerations, impacts, and motor loads occur?
- Mechanical CAD: Can the parts be modeled, toleranced, manufactured, and assembled?
Linkage mainly addresses the first two. A successful animation is not proof that a physical mechanism will be strong, quiet, safe, or manufacturable.
What kinds of mechanisms can you explore?
Linkage is suited to mechanisms whose important motion occurs in a plane. Practical examples include:

Pivot connectors represent revolute joints, while sliding connectors allow translation along a defined guide. Multiple inputs can be used in suitable arrangements. The Linkage 3.16 documentation provides the formal description of the program’s planar mechanism model.
These element types describe geometry and motion relationships. They do not automatically model bearing friction, backlash, flexible links, joint clearance, mass distribution, shaft misalignment, or motor limitations.
Why use it before full CAD?
A general-purpose 3D CAD system is the right place to create real parts, but it can be an inefficient place to discover basic linkage geometry. A focused 2D tool lets you change a pivot or link length and immediately see how the output changes.
Linkage can help answer questions such as:
- Does a four-bar linkage reach the required output angle?
- Does a slider travel far enough?
- Does a cam follower follow the intended path?
- Does a gear train rotate in the expected direction and ratio?
- Does a moving point trace the desired curve?
- Does the mechanism lock, stretch, reverse unexpectedly, or reach an impossible configuration?
The program combines editing and simulation in the same workspace. It also supports dimensions in millimetres or inches, measurements, manual dimension lines, one-to-one printing across one or more pages, saving mechanism files in .linkage2 XML format, still-image export, and HD simulation video export.

A beginner’s first mechanism
Start with a small, measurable project rather than a complex walking machine or multi-stage gear train. A simple four-bar or slider-crank is a good first exercise.
1. Define the motion first
Write down the requirements before drawing:
- Is the input rotary or linear?
- What is the input range or speed?
- What output angle, stroke, or path is required?
- Where are the fixed pivots?
- What physical envelope must the mechanism fit inside?
- What approximate link lengths are available?
- Must the output return to an exact position?
This turns an attractive sketch into a design that can be evaluated.
2. Establish the ground
Create the fixed frame or ground points first. Fixed pivots establish the reference geometry for every moving element and make it easier to understand which parts are actually constrained.
3. Add links and connectors
Use pivot connectors for rotating joints. Use a sliding connector where a part must translate along a known guide. Add only the links needed for the first motion loop.
4. Add one input
Use a rotary input for a crank or gear-driven mechanism. For a slider or actuator concept, use a linear input. The developer lists both rotary and linear inputs among Linkage’s supported features.
5. Simulate immediately
Run the mechanism after each major addition. Testing early makes it much easier to identify the link or constraint that introduced a failure.
6. Trace the useful point
Attach a drawing or tracing element to the output connector or another point of interest. The path can reveal dead-centre positions, nonlinear travel, reversals, unwanted lateral motion, poor dwell behaviour, or movement outside the available workspace.

8. Preserve the design
Save the .linkage2 file, export an image or video for reference, and keep a written record of critical dimensions. This protects the concept if a future operating-system or software change makes the original file difficult to open.
Diagnosing a mechanism that will not work
A mechanism can look plausible while its geometry is mathematically impossible. The developer has documented handling for issues including stretched links, invalid gear configurations, conflicting gear motion, and certain sliding-connector arrangements.
Stretched links or invalid geometry
Common symptoms include a link that appears to stretch, a connector that cannot reach its required location, an animation that refuses to run, or highlighted error geometry.
- Stop the simulation.
- Identify the highlighted or reported element.
- Remove the most recently added link or connector.
- Check whether two elements are imposing incompatible positions or rotations.
- Confirm that every slider has a valid guide.
- Check whether a gear is being controlled by both a fixed relationship and another gear.
- Rebuild the suspect joint in a simpler order.
- Test with fewer elements, then add the removed parts back one at a time.
Overconstrained loops
Typical causes include closing a loop with incorrect link lengths, connecting a link to two fixed points that cannot maintain the required distance, adding redundant gear relationships, or combining sliding constraints without checking their permitted motion. The developer’s notes on sliding connectors and gear conflicts and Windows compatibility describe several edge cases addressed during development.
Recommended Free Tools
The safest recovery is to reduce the mechanism to its ground, one input, and one output. Verify that simple motion, then rebuild the remaining loops incrementally.
Dead-centre positions
A linkage may be geometrically valid but difficult or impossible to drive through a dead-centre position. Near such a position, the output can slow dramatically, reverse, or require very high input torque. Treat a complete simulated cycle as a starting point for checking transmission angle and driveability—not as proof that a motor can pass every position.

Why a simulated mechanism can fail in the real world
Kinematic simulation generally treats links and joints as ideal geometric objects. A physical build adds imperfections and loads that can change the result:
- Insufficient clearance or interference with the frame
- Misaligned shafts and guides
- Link bending or twisting
- Bearing and joint friction
- Fastener looseness and backlash
- Material deformation
- Manufacturing and assembly tolerances
- Excessive acceleration, impact, or torque
- High side loads on sliders
- Poor packaging in the third dimension
A mechanism can complete its cycle while still producing too little useful force, excessive speed in one region, or unacceptable loads near dead centre. After the motion is satisfactory, check clearances, estimate forces and torque, select materials and bearings, and prototype cautiously.
Current availability and platform considerations
The official developer page documents development and testing on Windows 7, 8, and 10, plus an XP-specific installer. It also mentions reports of operation under Wine and Parallels. Those are historical compatibility statements; they should not be read as a guarantee of official support for every current Windows release, Linux distribution, or macOS version.
Linux use is best described as reported operation under Wine rather than a supported native Linux build. A Mac version has had development and early-access updates reported through 2025 and 2026, but it should be treated as development or early access unless the developer’s download page clearly labels a build as stable.
Begin with the developer’s official Linkage page. Download only from official sources, test the program on the operating system you intend to use, and keep installers, sample files, exports, and dimension notes with the project.

Who should use Linkage?
Choose Linkage when the mechanism is fundamentally planar, the immediate question is whether it will move, and you want a fast, focused tool for experimentation. It is particularly useful for makers, students, robotics hobbyists, kinetic-art builders, inventors, and early-stage construction or automation concepts involving moving assemblies.
Choose full 3D CAD when you need complex solid geometry, detailed assembly interference checks, production drawings, CAM, collaboration, revision control, or a manufacturer-ready data package. Choose an engineering analysis tool as well when force, stress, thermal behaviour, fatigue, or safety must be demonstrated.
The most effective workflow is often not Linkage versus CAD, but Linkage followed by CAD: use the lightweight 2D model to eliminate bad ideas quickly, then use a broader engineering workflow to turn the surviving concept into a buildable mechanism.
