The short version: Matter camera support is no longer just a proposal. Matter 1.5 introduced cameras and doorbells in November 2025, followed by camera-focused improvements in Matter 1.5.1 and broader changes in Matter 1.6. But that does not mean every Matter camera works with Apple Home or HomeKit Secure Video. Apple’s own camera lineup remains unconfirmed in the available evidence, while several Philips Hue products first reported as leaks—including Hue Bridge Pro, Hue Secure cameras and a video doorbell—were officially announced by Signify in September 2025.
The original story combined three developments that have since taken separate paths: a Matter standards update, reports of possible Apple camera products and leaked Hue hardware. Here is what changed, what is confirmed and what Apple Home users should actually check before buying.

Why Matter 1.4.2 mattered
Matter is a device-interoperability standard, not a complete smart-home platform. It defines how compatible devices can identify themselves, communicate and expose capabilities to ecosystems such as Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings.
Matter 1.4.2’s Wi-Fi-only commissioning change could allow some devices to be commissioned without including Bluetooth solely for initial setup. That may reduce hardware complexity and cost, although the result depends on how manufacturers build and certify their products.
The release also addressed security and certification processes. Those improvements are valuable, but a secure smart-home product still depends on the manufacturer’s firmware, account system, update policy, cloud services and platform integration.
It is important to distinguish four different things:
- The Matter specification: the technical standard and its supported device types.
- Manufacturer firmware: the software that makes a particular product implement the standard.
- Platform support: whether Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or another ecosystem supports that device type and feature set.
- Consumer availability: whether the product has actually shipped in the buyer’s country and is supported by current firmware.
A specification update does not automatically update an existing device, and certification does not guarantee identical features in every smart-home app.
Matter cameras are now real—but that does not make them Apple cameras
When the original discussion took place, camera support was prospective. Matter 1.5 subsequently made cameras and doorbells part of the standard. Matter 1.5.1 then added camera-focused refinements.
That gives manufacturers a common interoperability layer, but Matter camera support does not automatically guarantee:

Apple’s developer documentation describes how Matter accessories can work with Apple Home, but Apple’s consumer documentation separately describes HomeKit Secure Video-compatible cameras. Those are related technologies, not interchangeable labels. A product advertised as a “Matter camera” should not be assumed to be a HomeKit Secure Video camera.
What is actually known about Apple smart-home cameras?
Confirmed: Apple Home supports compatible third-party products
Apple Home supports Matter accessories and compatible third-party cameras. Apple says Matter accessories require a home hub such as a HomePod or Apple TV 4K for Apple Home features such as remote access and automations. Thread accessories also need a Thread-capable home hub or border router. Apple’s current Home documentation is available in its Home user guide.
Apple’s developer documentation also states that Apple platforms support Matter, including on iOS 16.1 and later: Apple Home and Matter.
Reported: Apple may be developing cameras and a doorbell
The original AppleInsider report attributed claims to Bloomberg and described possible Apple work on a video doorbell and a broader smart-camera lineup intended to compete with Ring. That is industry reporting, not an Apple product announcement. The original report is available here.
Not established: specifications, timing or pricing
The supplied evidence does not establish an Apple camera or doorbell release date, product name, resolution, pricing or regional availability. It also does not establish whether a future product would use Matter, HomeKit Secure Video, a proprietary Apple system or a combination of technologies.
Claims about Face ID-style recognition, Apple Intelligence, a built-in display, HomePod integration, iCloud+ requirements or a complete camera range remain speculation unless Apple announces them. Buyers who need a camera now should choose from products with documented compatibility rather than purchasing around an unconfirmed future product.
Philips Hue: leaks became official products
The Hue portion of the original story concerned reports from HueBlog about several upcoming products. The reported list included:

Several products reported as leaks therefore became real products. That does not mean every leaked specification or launch detail was independently confirmed.
What Hue Bridge Pro changes
Signify positions Hue Bridge Pro as more than a cosmetic replacement for the existing Bridge. Its stated capacity is up to 150 lights, 50 accessories and more than 500 custom scenes. Signify also says its processor is five times more powerful and its memory is 15 times larger than the previous Bridge.
Those performance figures are Signify’s product claims, not independent measurements. The Bridge Pro supports migration of existing Bridge settings, which should make upgrading easier, but integrations and automations should still be checked after migration.

MotionAware is exclusive to Bridge Pro according to Signify. The feature uses compatible Hue lighting equipment as part of a motion-detection system. That may reduce the need for some additional sensors, but it should not automatically be treated as equivalent to a dedicated PIR or mmWave sensor in every room or installation.
Signify announced a U.S. launch price of $98.99 in September 2025. Regional availability and current pricing may differ.
The Hue Bridge’s Matter certification record lists firmware version 1.3.0, Matter specification version 1.3 and a certification date of August 28, 2025. The record is available in the Connectivity Standards Alliance product database.
What Matter means for existing Hue owners
Hue owners generally have two integration paths.
Hue-native integration
The Hue app and native Hue integration are the better choice when the household relies on Hue-specific scenes, entertainment features, proprietary accessories, security functions or detailed lighting configuration. Native integration is also the route most likely to expose the manufacturer’s full feature set.

Matter can make Hue lighting available across multiple ecosystems through a standards-based bridge. Signify says Hue products are compatible with Matter through the Hue Bridge and that settings remain after the Bridge Matter update. Matter may be useful in a multi-platform household, but feature parity is not guaranteed.

Some Hue-specific scenes, names, effects, accessories or security events may appear differently in Apple Home. Changing integration methods may require re-pairing, reauthorization or rebuilding automations. Keep the Hue app available even if Apple Home is your primary interface.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are Hue cameras Apple Home cameras?
There are four separate questions:
- Do the cameras work in the Hue app? Signify’s product announcements establish Hue Secure support in the Hue ecosystem.
- Is the Hue Bridge Matter-certified? Yes, the cited certification record covers the Hue Bridge Matter platform.
- Does a specific Hue camera or doorbell appear in Apple Home? This must be verified for the exact product, region and firmware.
- Does it support HomeKit Secure Video? Matter certification and Hue-app support do not prove this Apple feature.
Do not buy a Hue camera on the assumption that Matter automatically provides Apple Home or HomeKit Secure Video support. If Apple integration is essential, look for explicit product documentation from both Apple and Signify.
Product and compatibility checklist
| Product or route | What is documented | Apple Home conclusion | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hue Bridge Pro | Hue Bridge platform; stated capacity of 150 lights, 50 accessories and 500-plus scenes; MotionAware support | Can provide a Matter bridge route, subject to platform support | Not every Hue feature necessarily appears in Apple Home |
| Hue Secure 2K wired camera | Hue Secure product with 2K resolution, Starlight technology and Wi-Fi setup | Verify specific Apple Home support before buying | Matter and Hue-app support do not equal HomeKit Secure Video |
| Hue Secure wired 2K doorbell | Hue Secure doorbell announced by Signify | Verify exact Apple Home and recording support | Advanced alerts or recording may depend on Hue services or subscriptions |
| Third-party HomeKit Secure Video camera | Apple-specific camera compatibility documented by the manufacturer | Best fit for an Apple-first camera requirement | Check iCloud+, hub, storage and feature requirements |
| Generic Matter camera | Matter camera support for the certified device and firmware | Do not assume Apple Home or HomeKit Secure Video | Platform support and advanced features vary by product |
Who should buy what?
Existing Hue owner with a small installation
Keep the current Bridge unless you need MotionAware, additional capacity, more scene storage or another Bridge Pro-specific feature. The upgrade may not justify its cost for a modest lighting setup.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Large Hue installation
Bridge Pro is the more relevant option if the home is approaching the stated limits of the original Bridge or needs more scenes and accessories. Confirm that your existing integrations and automations survive migration as expected.
Apple Home user who needs a camera now
Prioritize explicit HomeKit Secure Video or Apple Home documentation. Do not use Matter branding alone as a substitute for confirmation of Apple notifications, remote access, recording, activity zones and recognition features.
Multi-platform household
Matter-certified products may simplify cross-platform control, but check the exact device type, transport—Wi-Fi, Thread or Ethernet—firmware-update process and feature limitations in each ecosystem.
Buyer waiting for Apple hardware
Wait only if you are comfortable with an unannounced product, unknown timing and unknown pricing. Apple camera reports remain a reason to watch the market, not a specification sheet on which to base a purchase.
Common compatibility problems
- The device appears in one platform but not another: check the exact Matter device type, certification, firmware and platform support.
- The camera works in the vendor app but not Apple Home: vendor-app compatibility does not establish Apple Home compatibility.
- Apple Home shows the device but omits controls: Matter may expose only the features standardized and supported by that platform.
- Remote access fails: verify that a HomePod or Apple TV home hub is configured and online.
- Thread accessories disappear: check the Thread-capable hub or border router and network status.
- Hue scenes or names do not synchronize: use the Hue app for Hue-native configuration and recheck Apple Home automations after changes.
- A firmware update changes controls: manufacturers can alter exposed device categories and features through firmware.
- Recording or recognition requires payment: check subscription terms separately from live-view compatibility.
Apple’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking Bluetooth where relevant, restarting accessories, installing manufacturer firmware, restarting third-party bridges and Apple home hubs, and resetting devices only when necessary. See Apple’s Matter accessory troubleshooting guide.
The practical verdict
Matter has moved substantially beyond the 1.4.2 update discussed in the original 2025 roundup. Cameras and doorbells are now part of the standard, with follow-up improvements in Matter 1.5.1 and Matter 1.6. That progress improves the prospects for cross-platform smart homes, but it does not erase the difference between Matter support, Apple Home support and HomeKit Secure Video.
Apple camera products remain a reported possibility rather than a confirmed product range in the supplied evidence. Philips Hue is different: its Bridge Pro, Hue Secure cameras, doorbell, Smart Chime and MotionAware were subsequently announced officially. Choose Hue hardware for its documented Hue capabilities, choose an explicitly Apple-compatible camera when Apple Home is the priority, and treat unannounced Apple hardware as speculation until Apple provides specifications and availability.
