Apple Fifth Avenue is not simply a store beneath a famous glass cube. At 767 Fifth Avenue, between East 58th and East 59th Streets, the transparent entrance, landscaped plaza, circular skylenses, spiral stair and expansive underground retail floor operate as one architectural system.
The current store combines the identity of Apple’s 2006 landmark with a substantially rebuilt interior that reopened in 2019. It is simultaneously a working retail and support location, a public urban space and one of New York’s most recognizable examples of branded architecture.

A store divided between the city and the space below it
Apple Fifth Avenue occupies a prominent urban setting beside Central Park, opposite the Plaza Hotel and near Grand Army Plaza. The visible part of the store is modest: a glass cube set within the plaza associated with the General Motors Building. Most of the program, however, is underground.

That contrast explains the store’s architectural power. The cube acts as a beacon on Fifth Avenue, while the plaza announces that a much larger room exists beneath the pavement. Trees, water features, seating, pathways and circular skylights turn the approach into a public threshold rather than a simple entrance forecourt.

The result is best understood as a coordinated above-and-below-ground composition—not a freestanding glass building with a basement hidden underneath.
Three distinct phases of Apple Fifth Avenue

Keeping these phases separate matters. The 2011 project refined the visible entrance. The 2017–2019 project was a much more ambitious intervention below the plaza, replacing the earlier retail environment while retaining the cube’s public identity.
Why the glass cube became a landmark
The cube’s simplicity is deliberate. It is a transparent entrance pavilion, a visual marker on Fifth Avenue and a framed view into the descent below. Its current form uses 15 glass panes, compared with the 90-panel structure associated with the original store. A suspended illuminated Apple logo completes the restrained composition.

It is the ceremonial entrance to a subterranean store. That distinction is central to understanding the design: the cube gives the location an instantly recognizable public face, while the architecture’s real scale is revealed only after visitors descend.
Some historical accounts, including AppleInsider’s account, describe Harry Macklowe proposing the location to Steve Jobs and recount a confidential prototype process near Apple’s Cupertino campus. Those details are part of the store’s often-repeated origin story, but they should be treated as attributed anecdotes rather than assumptions with the same certainty as the opening date, address or documented renovations.

The plaza is part of the building
The redesigned plaza does more than frame the cube. It provides daylight, circulation, seating and visual orientation for the store below.
- Circular lights: The 2019 coverage by 9to5Mac describes 62 circular elements arranged around the cube.
- Skylenses: A subset of those elements functions as clear skylights or light wells, connecting the plaza to the underground ceiling.
- Landscape: Honey locust trees, water channels, stone seating and narrow walkways soften the cube’s hard geometry.
- Side entrances: Additional routes allow visitors to enter or leave without using the central cube sequence.
The circular elements are therefore more than decorative paving details. They are simultaneously lighting infrastructure, sculpture, street furniture and wayfinding. Their repeated pattern makes the underground store legible from the surface, while their reflective caps contribute to the plaza’s public life.

The broader design idea is more durable: planting, water and seating transform a corporate entrance into a civic-feeling urban room.
The descent: architecture meets circulation
Inside the cube, the visitor encounters a prominent spiral staircase leading into the store. Its design includes cantilevered metal treads, a curved glass handrail and a mirrored stainless-steel elevator shaft at the center. The elevator has been compared by observers to the cylindrical form of the 2013 Mac Pro; that is a visual analogy, not an official design designation.
The staircase also illustrates how the reconstruction addressed practical use. The redesigned stair uses textured surfaces for traction and replaced the earlier glass treads, making the route easier to read for people with low vision. It remains a dramatic architectural feature, but it is not the universally best route for every visitor.

Visitors with mobility limitations, vertigo, luggage or a preference for a direct route may reasonably use the elevator or side entrances. The most theatrical route and the most convenient route are not always the same.
Daylight beneath Fifth Avenue
The underground store was rebuilt to be larger and taller, with the excavation extending deeper below the plaza. Its ceiling is not treated as an anonymous basement ceiling. Circular openings align with the plaza’s skylenses, allowing daylight to enter the retail floor and preserving a visual relationship with the trees and sky above.
The ceiling grid and its repeated circular apertures make the structural and lighting strategy visible. Visitors can look upward and understand that the daylight is arriving through the plaza rather than through conventional windows in an exterior wall.
The 2019 reporting also described artificial lighting designed to respond gradually to changing natural daylight. The important architectural effect is perceptual: the underground room is intended to feel connected to the city above, not sealed away from it. The available evidence does not establish specific sensors, software, brightness levels or energy savings, so those details should not be inferred.
A retail floor designed as an experience
Below ground, the store is organized as a large open room with wooden product tables, Apple’s interactive “Avenues,” accessory displays, planted seating and indoor trees. The greater length and volume created by the reconstruction allowed Apple to accommodate retail, service, learning and event functions in a single environment.

The Forum and video wall give the store a role beyond product display. They support demonstrations, talks, creative sessions and other Today at Apple programming. At the 2019 reopening, coverage also reported two Boardrooms for private events and meetings with creators, as well as an Experience Room intended for more controlled demonstrations of Apple products and services. Those features belong to the reopening-era description unless Apple confirms that their current configuration and access remain unchanged.
The current store page specifically advertises Apple Vision Pro experiences and demos. That current service should not automatically be treated as identical to the 2019 Experience Room; the function or fit-out may have evolved even if the broader idea of guided product experience remains.

Apple’s official Fifth Avenue store page currently lists:
- Shopping and Apple Specialist assistance.
- Genius Bar support.
- In-store order pickup.
- Apple Vision Pro demonstrations.
- Today at Apple sessions.
- Accessibility support, including sign-language interpretation through an on-demand video service and arrangements for in-person interpretation in advance.
Apple currently lists the store as Always Open. That does not mean every service operates identically at every hour. Genius Bar appointments, pickup windows, product demonstrations, Today at Apple sessions and inventory can have separate availability. Check the official store page before traveling.

Today at Apple programming changes over time. The live Fifth Avenue calendar is the reliable source for current sessions, which may include photography, video, Apple Pencil, Apple Intelligence, product introductions and family programming.

A practical architectural walkthrough
- Start on Fifth Avenue. View the cube in relation to the Plaza Hotel, Central Park and the surrounding General Motors Building plaza.
- Walk around the plaza. Look at the circular elements from different angles and notice how the trees, water, seating and paths organize the space.
- Use the cube for the full ceremonial sequence. If stairs are comfortable and practical, the central entrance makes the relationship between surface and underground space easiest to experience.
- Look back upward from below. The ceiling openings reveal how the skylenses connect the retail floor to the plaza.
- Explore the store as a working facility. The Forum, Avenues, product tables, planted seating and service areas are part of an active retail and support environment, not a museum exhibit.
- Choose convenience when needed. Use the elevator or side entrances if they better suit mobility, luggage, crowd levels or a time-sensitive pickup.
What the design gets right—and what it costs
The store’s strongest achievement is the integration of visibility and depth. The cube gives Apple a powerful urban symbol without occupying the entire plaza with a large above-ground building. The skylenses then prevent the underground volume from becoming an isolated basement, while the stair and elevator turn the descent into a legible architectural event.
That ambition also creates trade-offs. The landmark entrance can be crowded, especially during product launches and tourist peaks. The open plan is visually generous but can make a busy retail floor harder to read. The dramatic stair is memorable but cannot be the right route for everyone. And the store’s merchandise, demonstrations and event content change much faster than its architectural shell, so photographs from the 2019 reopening should not be read as a guarantee of the exact current display.
It is also important not to confuse historical launch claims with current facts. Apple described the rebuilt location as its largest store at the 2019 reopening; that is not a verified 2026 ranking. Similarly, figures such as 900 employees speaking 36 languages or historical daily revenue belong to the reopening or historical reporting context, not to a current operating profile.
The architectural significance of Apple Fifth Avenue
Apple Fifth Avenue matters because it makes retail architecture operate at several scales at once. From Fifth Avenue, the cube is a minimal object and a brand symbol. In the plaza, the circular skylenses, trees, water and seating create a public landscape. Below ground, the same circles become daylight apertures, while the stair, elevator and open retail floor organize movement through a much larger volume.
The 2019 reconstruction therefore preserved the icon without treating the icon as sufficient. Apple kept the recognizable entrance but replaced the less distinctive underground environment with a deeper, taller and more connected store. The cube is memorable precisely because it is not just an object: it is the visible cap of a carefully engineered public room below the city.
