The stirrers act as compression struts while the bands carry tension; carefully routed and adjusted, they hold the pieces in a stable, three-dimensional form. This is Glen Whitney’s MoMath project: a frustum of a pentagonal pyramid, not a load-bearing table.
How the tensegrity structure works
Tensegrity combines elements that push with elements that pull. In this build, the paired coffee stirrers resist compression and the rubber bands remain in tension. Their balance supports the sculpture’s shape without the struts simply forming a conventional rigid frame. Glen Whitney describes the combination as “almost magical-seeming”; the effect is striking, but the construction is a mechanics model rather than functional furniture. MoMath’s original tutorial gives the project instructions.
Materials and preparation
- Ten coffee stirrers, paired into five struts
- Small rubber bands
- Tape
Use stirrers that can be paired and leave a narrow gap between the two pieces of each strut. That gap lets a rubber band sit at an end and be adjusted during assembly. The tutorial does not specify a particular brand, size, or load capacity.
Build the pentagonal sculpture
- Make five paired struts. Put two stirrers together and tape them near both ends, leaving the central length and a small slot at each end available. Repeat until you have five pairs.
- Weave the pentagon. Arrange the five paired struts into an interwoven pentagonal layout. Each stick should pass under one neighboring stick and over another, rather than all five pairs lying in a single untangled ring.
- Connect the lower ends to upper ends. At a low end, slip a rubber band into the gap between the paired stirrers. Route it to the next upper end counterclockwise. Repeat the same sequence around the structure, wrapping the struts into a star-like arrangement.
- Join the five upper ends. Pass one final rubber band through the gaps at all five upper ends so they are connected.
- Adjust the tension and shape. Gently pull and reposition the bands through the slots. Work around the structure until it is balanced, looks symmetric, and rises out of the plane into a three-dimensional form.
What to adjust if it will not rise evenly
- Check the weave: confirm each stick passes under one neighbor and over another. A mismatched crossing can prevent the repeated band routing from balancing.
- Check the band path: lower ends should connect to the next upper ends in the same counterclockwise sequence, with the final band joining all five upper ends.
- Rebalance gradually: shift bands through the slots in small increments rather than pulling one side tight at once. Aim for symmetry and an upright shape, not maximum tension.
The MoMath instructions do not report a tested load, failure threshold, or other measured performance figure. Treat the completed object as a visual demonstration of force balance, not something to sit on, place a load on, or rely on as a support.

How this differs from a tensegrity table
A table is a related project, but it is not the same build: it needs a top and a base connected by tension members, with struts in compression. Texas A&M’s physics explanation describes the table strings as tension members and its wooden struts as compression members. For a household-material prototype, the State Library of Queensland’s workshop result suggests matching, symmetrical top and base shapes and aligning the string attachment points; it also cautions that a taller prototype tends to be less stable. These are design considerations, not a tested capacity rating.

Choose the coffee-stirrer sculpture for a quick hands-on illustration of tension and compression. A table-shaped project introduces a different geometry and demands careful alignment; a CAD/3D-printing route additionally requires access to design and fabrication tools.
