Most RTS systems can add a compatible remote by putting an existing remote into programming mode, then briefly pressing PROG on the new remote. io-homecontrol systems use a different, more system-specific process, and Bluetooth-labelled products should be programmed from their exact model manual.
Identify the protocol before pressing PROG or attempting a reset. Pairing an additional remote is not the same as resetting a motor, and an incorrect reset can erase remotes, travel limits, group assignments, or—on some io systems—system-key information.

What “programming” means on a Somfy system
Somfy users use the word programming for several different jobs:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Adding a remote: pairing another transmitter with a motor that already works.
- Replacing a remote: adding a new transmitter after the original is lost or damaged.
- Assigning a channel: choosing which motor or group a multi-channel remote controls.
- Creating a group: assigning several shades, shutters, awnings, or screens to one channel.
- Saving a favorite position: storing an intermediate position, often called MY.
- Changing limits or direction: adjusting where a motor stops or correcting reversed movement.
- Resetting a motor: erasing stored controls or configuration and starting again.
- Adding a hub: connecting compatible equipment to TaHoma or another supported smart-home controller.
The safest first task is to determine which of these you actually need. If an existing remote still operates the shade, do not begin with a factory reset.

Before you start
- Photograph the front and rear of every remote, including labels inside the battery compartment.
- Record which channel operates each shade or group.
- Write down the motor, receiver, and wall-switch model numbers if accessible.
- Install a known-good battery in the new remote.
- Check whether the motor operates from an existing remote or wall control.
- Keep the new remote close to the intended motor during pairing, while avoiding accidental operation of nearby products.
Also note whether you are adding a remote, replacing one, setting a favorite position, or correcting a limit. These tasks do not use interchangeable button sequences.
Identify the Somfy technology first
RTS
Radio Technology Somfy, usually marked RTS, is commonly found in Situo and Telis handheld remotes. Somfy’s US catalog lists Situo 1 RTS, Situo 5 RTS, Telis 1 RTS, Telis 4 RTS, and Telis 16 RTS families. Compatible RTS products can include interior shades, blinds, draperies, awnings, exterior screens, rolling shutters, and LED lighting, but compatibility remains product- and receiver-specific. See Somfy’s official remote catalog and RTS product information.
io-homecontrol
io remotes are marked io or io-homecontrol. Models include Situo io, Telis 1 io, Telis Composio io, Keytis io, and Easy Sun io. io systems may provide two-way feedback and can depend on a system key, so their pairing and reset procedures should not be treated as RTS procedures.
Bluetooth and other variants
Somfy’s current listings include Bluetooth as a technology filter for some products. The available product information does not establish one universal Bluetooth sequence. If the remote says Bluetooth, use the exact model instructions rather than extrapolating from RTS.
Physical clues are useful but not conclusive
Look for the protocol marking, product family, channel count, display, feedback light, MY button, automatic-mode controls, and recessed PROG button. Similar-looking remotes can belong to different technologies, so appearance alone is not enough.

- Insert fresh batteries in the new remote.
- If it is multi-channel, select the channel intended for the motor or group.
- Bring the existing working remote close to the intended motor or receiver.
- Press and hold the existing remote’s PROG button until the shade, shutter, screen, or other motorized product briefly jogs.
- Release the button.
- Briefly press the new remote’s PROG button.
- Wait for a second brief jog, which normally confirms that the transmitter was added.
- Test UP, DOWN, and STOP or MY, if present.
The location of PROG and the exact timing vary by remote family. The instructions for the specific model take priority. A brief jog during this process is usually a programming confirmation, not a fault.
Recommended Free Tools
Important: do not keep repeating PROG presses if the shade begins moving unexpectedly or several shades respond. Stop, identify which controls still work, and verify the model and channel before continuing.
Programming a multi-channel RTS remote
On a five- or sixteen-channel remote, a channel is a stored selection that may represent one motor, one room, or a group. Select the intended channel before pairing or testing.
- Programming a motor to channel 2 does not necessarily remove it from channel 1.
- A whole-house or group channel may move several products at once.
- If the wrong shade moves, the selected channel may already contain that shade or a group assignment.
- For a clean installation, work one shade at a time and document each channel.
Repeat the addition process channel-by-channel when assigning separate motors or groups. Somfy’s remote catalog distinguishes one-, multi-channel, and different Telis/Situo families; availability and model names can change by region.
Favorite positions, MY, STOP, and travel limits
These functions are different:
- UP and DOWN: move the product toward its programmed upper or lower limit.
- STOP: stops movement at the current position.
- MY or favorite: recalls a saved intermediate position when supported.
- Travel limits: define the fully open and fully closed stopping points.
- Group channel: operates several motors through one stored selection.
Many Somfy remotes support a favorite position. Generally, you move the shade to the desired intermediate location and use the model’s documented favorite-position command to save it, then press MY or the equivalent control to recall it. Do not assume every remote uses the same key sequence, and do not confuse a favorite position with a travel limit.
Direction and limit adjustments are more model-dependent. They may be set during commissioning, through a specific remote sequence, with an installer tool, or through a receiver or motor procedure. Use the exact motor manual for a shade that moves in reverse, stops too early, fails to reach a limit, moves only while a button is held, or uses a hardwired receiver. A generic reset sequence can erase working settings or affect multiple shades.

How to add an io-homecontrol remote
Do not use the RTS workflow automatically on an io system. Somfy’s Telis Composio io guide documents the following model-specific pattern:
- On an already-paired Situo io remote, press and hold PROG until the application briefly moves.
- Briefly press and release PROG on the Telis Composio io remote.
- Wait for the movement and indicator or display feedback that confirms the operation.
- If the indicator blinks orange, treat the pairing as unsuccessful and consult the model instructions before retrying.
This example applies to the documented Telis Composio io workflow, not every io remote. The guide also warns that repeating a pairing operation involving an already-paired control can undo the pairing. Use Somfy’s Telis Composio io installation guide for that model.
Why io resets require extra caution
Some io systems use a system key. Somfy’s Set&Go io documentation warns that restoring factory settings on a Telis 1 io can delete motors assigned to the remote and initialize the system key. Do not factory-reset an io installation unless you have confirmed the exact model, documented the motor assignments, and understand what will be erased.

An existing remote still works
Buy a remote with the same compatible technology and use the working remote to add it. This is normally safer than resetting the motor. Match the protocol, product family, channel requirements, and receiver compatibility—not merely the shape of the old remote.
No handheld remote works, but a wall switch does
Identify the motor and receiver, then follow the documented procedure for that equipment. A wall switch may be enough to access programming mode, but the method is model-specific. Avoid guessing with reset sequences.
No control works
First check power, batteries, the wall control, and the motor label. If the motor is hardwired, inaccessible, or unidentified, an installer or service technician may be required.

The remote is obsolete
Determine whether it is RTS, io, Bluetooth, or another legacy technology. A current remote that looks similar is not necessarily a compatible replacement.

TaHoma and app-based control
TaHoma can add app access, remote access, schedules, scenes, and—in supported regions and configurations—voice control. It is not automatically a replacement for every handheld remote and will not repair an incorrectly programmed motor.
Compatibility must be checked by motor, receiver, and protocol. Somfy publishes a TaHoma compatibility list covering RTS and io equipment, including product-specific limitations and cases where control may be manual-only.
Choose a handheld remote when you want simple local control without an app or account, or when you need reliable operation during hub or internet outages. Choose TaHoma when you specifically want scheduling, scenes, remote access, or supported voice integration. A hub is excessive if you only need one replacement remote or own unsupported equipment.
Troubleshooting Somfy programming
| Symptom | Likely causes | First action | Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nothing moves during programming | Dead battery, wrong protocol, wrong remote, insufficient power, incorrect PROG control, or receiver-specific requirements | Replace the battery, test the original remote, confirm the model, and work close to the motor | Factory-resetting before identifying the equipment |
| The wrong shade moves | Wrong channel, group channel, or an existing multi-motor assignment | Select another channel and work one motor at a time | Erasing all programming |
| The new remote works but the old one does not | A replacement or toggle procedure may have been used, or an io pairing was repeated | Stop and document which remotes still operate the motor | Repeated PROG presses or an unverified reset |
| The remote LED does not light | Reversed or flat battery, dirty contacts, failed remote, or damaged button | Install a known-good battery and inspect the contacts | Reprogramming the motor before testing the remote |
| The shade moves only a small amount | A normal programming jog, stop command, favorite position, low battery, obstruction, overload protection, or fault | Distinguish a brief pairing jog from short movement during normal operation | Assuming that every short movement means pairing failed |
If nothing moves, also verify that the motor has power and that the original remote actually controls the intended product. A nearby motor may respond if several products share a channel or are within radio range.
When to call a Somfy installer
Professional help is the safer choice when:
- The motor or receiver model is unknown.
- The installation is hardwired or inaccessible.
- Several shades move unexpectedly together.
- Travel limits or direction need changing.
- The only remote is lost and no documented pairing method is available.
- An io system-key issue is possible.
- Repeated model-specific pairing attempts fail.
- The installation is commercial, multi-unit, or shared by multiple occupants.
Choosing the right replacement
| Need | Likely choice | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| One motor or one group | One-channel RTS remote | That the motor is RTS and the receiver is compatible |
| Several shades or rooms | Five-channel or larger RTS remote | Channel assignments and existing groups |
| Fixed room control | Compatible Smoove wall switch | Protocol, receiver, and installation requirements |
| Portable outdoor control | Compatible Telis or outdoor-oriented multi-channel remote | Exact motor and regional product compatibility |
| App, scheduling, or voice control | TaHoma system | Somfy’s current compatibility list and regional features |
| No working control or unknown equipment | Installer or service visit | Motor label, receiver access, and installation history |
As an August 16, 2026 US-store snapshot, Somfy listings showed examples including a Situo 1 RTS at $89.95, Situo 5 RTS at $110.95, Telis 4 RTS Patio at $153.95, Telis 16 RTS at $275.95, and a TaHoma/Situo bundle at $328.91. Several were marked out of stock, so these are not durable prices or availability guarantees. Confirm the current listing on Somfy’s official catalog before buying.
Third-party and used listings may provide access to discontinued Telis models, but they carry greater risk of incorrect protocol, worn buttons, missing battery covers, counterfeit products, or obsolete stock. Verify the exact product reference before purchase.
The safe operating rule
Match the protocol first, use an existing working remote whenever possible, select the correct channel, and treat reset procedures as a last resort. If the system does not respond, identify the motor and receiver before escalating from battery checks to pairing—and from pairing to professional service.
