Mary Gardens: Flowers and Herbs for Peace and Devotion

A Mary Garden can be a garden bed or a single pot: a flexible devotional space where flowers and herbs offer prompts for prayer and reflection.

A Mary Garden is a devotional space that brings prayer and reflection into the care of plants associated with Mary. It can be a backyard bed, a small pot indoors, or any locally suitable place for flowers and herbs. A statue is a common focal point, but neither a statue nor a prescribed plant list is required.

What makes a Mary Garden?

Mary Gardens connect cultivation with devotion to the Virgin Mary. Flowers and herbs may carry Marian names or symbolic meanings, and tending them can offer a quiet prompt for prayer or reflection. The Diocese of East Anglia describes an outdoor garden with a statue as a typical form, while the Diocese of Corpus Christi notes that an indoor pot can serve when there is no outdoor plot. East Anglia also welcomes any flowers as part of a beautiful, prayerful space.

The tradition is not governed by one universal list. The University of Dayton’s Mary’s Gardens archive describes a movement that shared Catholic and Marian plant symbolism through lists, layout plans, herb guides, and instructions for indoor dish gardens. Its materials show how the idea can be adapted to different spaces and purposes.

How the tradition developed

The Diocese of East Anglia places the broader practice in medieval Europe, where monasteries and churches cultivated flowers associated with Mary. The Diocese of Corpus Christi reports an earlier example associated with St. Fiacre in seventh-century France: a garden connected to an oratory at a hospice. That is a reported early example, not a settled, universally established origin.

Corpus Christi also reports that “seint mary gouldes,” identified with the marigold, appears in a record from 1373. In the United States, the University of Dayton’s Mary’s Gardens material identifies a public garden established by Frances Crane Lillie at St. Joseph’s Parish in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, in 1932. Lillie’s garden inspired Edward McTague and John S. Stokes Jr. to found Mary’s Gardens in Philadelphia in 1951, according to Corpus Christi; the University of Dayton archive also records the organization’s founding in 1951.

Flowers and herbs with Marian associations

These examples come from distinct diocesan and archival sources. Meanings vary across folk tradition and devotional guides; they are invitations to reflection, not a required code for planting.

Corpus Christi describes a symbolic scheme in which fragrant plants suggest spiritual sweetness, soothing herbs suggest heavenly mercy, and bitter or sour herbs recall Mary’s sorrows. That is one source’s interpretive framework, not a universal rule.

The University of Dayton’s MARIANA 1 is a historical botanical compilation, published in 1965 and revised in 1996, that records over 600 plants with names or symbolism referring to God, Mary, angels, or saints in popular Christian tradition. Its entries draw on dictionaries, horticultural lists, and books about legends and customs; the compilation is an archival record of associations, not a current botanical or doctrinal standard.

Choosing a space and plants

Start with the site you have and what you want the garden to offer. The archive includes plans for sunny gardens, culinary and fragrant herb lists, and indoor dish-garden instructions. Those historic resources can suggest arrangements, but they do not establish what will thrive in every present-day climate.

  • Outdoor bed: Choose plants suited to the light, soil, and conditions in your location. A statue can serve as a focal point if you want one.
  • Small indoor pot: Corpus Christi describes an indoor pot as an option when outdoor space is unavailable. Follow plant-specific care needs for the light and conditions your home provides.
  • Flower-focused space: Use flowers whose attributed meanings invite the reflections you value, such as humility, purity, or sorrow.
  • Herb-focused space: Fragrant or culinary herbs can combine practical cultivation with devotional symbolism, a pairing also found in accounts of older gardens.

Plant suitability depends on local soil and region, so these symbolic lists should not be treated as a planting calendar or guarantee of growth.

Making cultivation part of devotion

A garden can give prayer a recurring, physical rhythm: watering, pruning, or noticing a flower becomes an occasion to pause and reflect. The University of Dayton guide presents flowers as prompts for contemplation and the garden as a public expression of devotion. The Corpus Christi account mentions practices such as Mass, the rosary, and almsgiving alongside gardening; these are possibilities for readers, not required steps.

In Marialis Cultus (1974), Pope Paul VI situated Marian devotion within Christian worship: “This devotion fits—as we have indicated above—into the only worship that is rightly called ‘Christian,’ because it takes its origin and effectiveness from Christ, finds its complete expression in Christ, and leads through Christ in the Spirit to the Father.” The statement concerns Marian devotion generally, not garden design.
