WOOD Magazine’s 2016 tip recommends using several cotton balls for holes larger than 1 inch in diameter, then removing them when the task is finished. It does not specify which surfaces or tasks the method suits.
How to mask a hole with a cotton ball
- Insert a cotton ball into the hole.
- Use the eraser end of a pencil to tamp the cotton into place.
- For a hole larger than 1 inch in diameter, insert several cotton balls.
- When finished, remove the cotton with a small straight-bladed screwdriver, tweezers, or needle-nose pliers.
These steps follow WOOD Magazine’s May 16, 2016 tip. It gives no upper size limit, surface guidance, or test results, so treat the method as a temporary option rather than assuming it suits every material or job.
Masking is not hole repair
The cotton is removed after the task; it is not a permanent filler. If you need to repair a hole in a wall, use a suitable spackling or patching compound instead. Sherwin-Williams recommends working compound into the hole with a flexible putty knife, removing excess promptly, letting it dry for a few hours, and smoothing it with a fine-grit sanding sponge.
Product directions and stated drying times differ. PPG says its HOMAX Nail Hole Patch is a squeeze-tube spackling product for interior drywall, plaster, paneling, trim, and similar surfaces, and that it dries in one hour. 3M says its Wall Repair Quick Patch Small Hole Spackling is for dents, dings, nail holes, gouges, and wall damage on drywall, plaster, and wood; it states that a 1/2-inch-diameter by 1/8-inch-deep hole may be ready to paint in 15 minutes, with drying time varying. Follow the chosen product’s instructions for the actual surface and hole.
