On most Samsung top-load washers with a manual detergent drawer, put liquid HE detergent in the liquid cup in the main compartment; put powder directly in that compartment after removing the cup; and put pods in the tub before adding clothes. Exact layouts vary by model, so check your washer’s manual before using the dispenser.
Where each type of detergent goes
Samsung’s US guidance describes the manual top-load detergent drawer as being directly under the lid. Open the lid and pull out the drawer, then use the placement that matches your detergent.

These placements follow Samsung’s US detergent instructions. Follow the manual for your exact model if its dispenser differs.
Choose the right detergent and amount
Samsung says its washers require HE (High Efficiency) detergent. Measure according to the detergent label and the load size, accounting for the product’s concentration. There is no universal dose that applies to every load and detergent.

- Use only the amount needed for the load, and never fill the dispenser past its MAX line.
- If the label’s recommended amount for your load exceeds the MAX line, Samsung advises reducing the load size or using a more concentrated detergent rather than overfilling.
- Samsung says liquid and powder clean comparably. Powder may be harder to dissolve in cold water, while liquid can be used to pretreat heavily soiled stains.
Samsung warns that exceeding the MAX line can stain or damage clothes and may damage the washer, including by causing leaks.
Check whether your washer has a manual or automatic dispenser
Not every Samsung top-loader uses the standard manual drawer. Some models have automatic dispensers, whose compartments and controls work differently. Samsung’s auto-dispenser instructions say those compartments accept liquid detergent. For top-load models with this setup, there is no manual detergent compartment; if auto dispensing is not being used, detergent or softener goes directly in the tub according to the model’s instructions.

Do not rely on a universal left-or-right location for detergent, softener, or bleach: compartment layouts vary. Look up your washer’s exact model in its manual or check the model-specific guidance from Samsung Canada.

Check that the detergent is in the correct compartment and that the liquid cup is installed for liquid or removed for powder. If the drawer still does not work correctly, check that the washer is level where relevant and follow the troubleshooting steps for your model. Samsung notes that a replacement drawer may be needed if the problem persists; any replacement must match the exact washer model. Its guidance on washer leaks and detergent-tray use also stresses using the correct tray configuration and staying within the MAX line.
