The Martadi–Kolti road reopened after a three-month monsoon blockage, but reopening did not finish its long-delayed upgrade. The October 2, 2026 update reported that vehicles could again carry apples toward Bajura’s district headquarters; the 41-kilometre route remains incompletely upgraded, and its 26-kilometre blacktopping contract was only about 50 percent complete in July 2026.
Why the road matters—and why a reopening is not completion
The road links Martadi, the district headquarters of Bajura, with Kolti in the district’s northeast. The Himalayan Times reported that construction began in 1999 and that the route is 41 kilometres long. The continuing project concerns a 26-kilometre blacktopping section, not the full route. In July 2026, The Himalayan Times put physical progress on that contract at about 50 percent, after repeated deadline extensions. The Himalayan Times

The distinction matters for travellers and residents: vehicles returning to the road after a blockage signals restored access at that time, not a completed blacktopping project or dependable year-round passage. Landslides, rising streams and incomplete bridges can disrupt travel independently of the contract’s paving progress.
What has happened to the construction contract?
The Himalayan Times reported that PS Baniya Construction Service received the 26-kilometre blacktopping contract in June 2020 for Rs 501.7 million, with an original three-year completion period. Dinesh Khabar’s late-August 2026 account gave the same contract value and scope, describing the award as Ashar 2077 BS and reporting overall progress at 50 percent. It noted substantial progress on the first nine kilometres from Martadi, with sections elsewhere still unfinished. Dinesh Khabar

The office had also issued a 15-day notice asking the company to make contact; Radio Nepal said termination procedures were advancing after the company did not respond. Those were reported enforcement steps, not confirmation that the contract was ultimately terminated. Radio Nepal
Allocated money did not translate into completed work
The Himalayan Times, citing the Infrastructure Development Office, Achham, reported that the full Rs 200 million allocated to Martadi–Kolti for fiscal year 2025/26 lapsed. It also reported that more than Rs 135 million of the Rs 150 million allocation in the preceding fiscal year went unspent. These figures describe the reported allocations and lapses for those fiscal years; they are not measures of work completed or a current funding balance. The Himalayan Times

The Bauli Khola crossing
In April 2026, INSEC reported that work on the Bauli Khola bridge had been abandoned for five years and stood at 21 percent progress. During the monsoon, the river can rise enough to halt transport. INSEC described vehicles stopping at the bank, after which passengers may have to continue on foot, sometimes for hours. A monitoring team that included Chief District Officer Dorendra Niraula and District Coordination Committee chief Tulsiram Rokaya directed the contractor to make progress within three months; that reported instruction does not establish that the bridge was subsequently completed. Reported effects on health, mobility and schooling
INSEC reported that the crossing creates difficulties for patients, pregnant women, new mothers and people with disabilities trying to reach health care in time. It also described students crossing on foot and risks for residents of Badimalika Municipality wards 7 and 8, four local units in eastern and northern Bajura, and people from Humla, Mugu and Kalikot. Farmers can lose income when produce cannot reach markets. These are reported examples of hardship, not a representative survey of all affected residents. INSEC
Transport costs and apple sales during the 2026 closure
A September 2026 Dinesh Khabar report attributed a three-month closure to rain-triggered landslides and rising water in streams. One local resident described making as many as three vehicle changes and paying up to Rs 2,000 to travel from Martadi to Kolti while the road was blocked. That is an individual account, not a standard fare. Dinesh Khabar

The October 2, 2026 reopening report said farmers in eastern and northern Bajura could again use vehicles to carry apples toward the district headquarters. During the closure, some farmers had carried fruit on their backs or sent it via the Karnali Corridor to Nepalgunj or Dhangadhi. The report describes the practical value of restored access, but does not establish that the route will remain open through future weather events. Dinesh Khabar
