For a U.S. trip, check the official state Department of Transportation (DOT) or 511 service for every state on your route. Review both its live construction and closure map and any separate planned-work listings, then save your route and turn on alerts if the service offers them. For city streets and county roads, check the relevant local public-works source too. Recheck shortly before leaving: schedules and road conditions can change.
Find the road authority for every part of your route
Start by listing the states your trip crosses, then search each state’s DOT or 511 service. These official traveler-information services often combine construction, closures, detours, traffic and incident reports. A route that continues onto local streets may require another source: some state services do not cover county roads or city streets.

Coverage differs by service. For example, Iowa 511 covers interstates, U.S. routes and state highways, but says it does not cover county roads or city streets. Check the coverage notes on the authority’s site rather than assuming every road appears on its map. Iowa 511

Check current conditions and scheduled work separately
On the official map, enable construction, closure and detour layers. Open individual map markers or event listings to check the affected location, direction, timing and detour details. A live map may show what is active now without showing work scheduled for a future date, so look for a separate planned-closure or construction schedule.

California: active closures and planned closures
Caltrans QuickMap includes traffic speeds, construction and maintenance lane or road closures, incidents, changeable message signs, cameras and chain controls. Caltrans says active lane-closure data files update every five minutes; that is a Caltrans-specific interval, not a guarantee for every traffic service. Planned closures are listed separately, so check that resource if you are planning ahead. Caltrans QuickMap
Other state and regional examples
- Bay Area: 511.org offers a live map and traffic alerts with incident and construction information. It says construction data comes from multiple sources, including the Caltrans Lane Closure System. Its WZDx feed describes planned and active work-zone activities, closures and detours for participating jurisdictions; it should not be read as coverage of every road in the region. 511.org
- Arizona: AZ511 provides information for the state highway system, including construction, closures, incidents, alternate routes, cameras and speed information. It supports destination entry, saved routes and alerts. AZ511
- Florida: FL511, Florida’s official real-time traffic and travel information service, provides construction, closures, detours, destination-based routing and travel times through its website and app. FL511
- North Carolina: NCDOT directs travelers to DriveNC.gov for current traffic information, including closures and construction. The state’s 511 phone line also provides road-condition information and urgent interstate-closure messages. NCDOT traffic and travel information
Save your route and choose how to receive updates
If the service supports it, enter your destination or save the route you intend to drive. Turn on route alerts, email or text notices, or app notifications where available. Route-based updates can make it easier to notice a closure affecting your trip rather than scanning a whole-state map.

Services offer different update channels. Iowa 511 describes saved routes, email and text alerts, and hands-free, eyes-free announcements. Florida’s service supports destination routing, while AZ511 offers saved routes and alerts. North Carolina also provides phone information through 511; check the agency page for current operator availability.
Use navigation and crowd reports as a second check
Navigation apps and crowd-sourced reports can add useful context, but they are not a substitute for the responsible road authority’s information. FL511 says some of its data is contributed by Waze, and NYSDOT’s 511NY search results describe Waze-reported information alongside agency reports. The available service descriptions do not establish that any one navigation app includes every planned closure. For a closure that could change your route or departure time, verify it with the relevant DOT or local road authority.

A practical check before you leave
- Identify the jurisdictions: List each state on the trip and any cities or counties whose roads you will use. Find their official DOT, 511 or public-works pages.
- Enter the route or destination: Use route planning or saved-route features if offered, and check that the route matches the roads you expect to take.
- Review event layers and listings: Turn on construction, closure and detour information. Open relevant events for their location, direction, timing and detour details.
- Look for future-work schedules: Check planned-closure listings separately from the live map, especially if your trip is days or weeks away.
- Set available alerts: Enable route notifications, email or text updates, or use phone and hands-free options where offered.
- Recheck close to departure: A planned closure may be changed, delayed or updated. Do not treat a schedule checked well in advance as confirmation of current conditions.
Check safely while traveling
Review the route before setting off. Do not read or operate a phone while driving. If you need an update en route, use a voice-based service or pull over somewhere safe before checking a screen. 511.org advises callers to use voice commands or pull over to check a phone; Iowa DOT likewise recommends checking before departure or from a suitable stopping place. 511.org safety guidance
For trips outside the United States, identify the road authority responsible for the roads on your route and verify its coverage and update channels directly. Service coverage and update schedules vary by jurisdiction.
