To reduce the chance of a construction delay, check your state or regional 511 service and the responsible transportation department’s project notice for your route and travel time. Compare current traffic and restrictions with official detours and alternate routes, then recheck shortly before leaving. No route plan can guarantee delay-free travel: work schedules, closures and traffic conditions can change.
Start with your trip date and departure time
Road work can have different restrictions on different days or at different times. Before checking a map, settle on your travel date and approximate departure window. A project schedule tells you what work is planned; a traffic service helps show what is affecting roads now. Check both rather than treating a project listing as a live traffic report.

Check official traffic and project information
Use the local or state 511 service
Open the 511 website or app for the area you will travel through. Turn on available layers for construction, closures, traffic speeds and incidents, and select map icons for details instead of relying on the map alone. Regional services may also show message signs and camera snapshots. For example, the San Francisco Bay Area’s 511.org describes a map with congestion, incidents, construction, events, road closures, changeable message signs and camera snapshots; its work-zone data through WZDx covers participating Bay Area jurisdictions, not the whole country.
Open the responsible DOT’s project notice
Look up the individual project on the state or local transportation department’s website when possible. Project pages may explain planned and current work, dates, affected directions, lane or full-road closures, detours, target completion information, and email or text alerts. The available details and notification options vary by agency and project.

- Bright, high-resolution 5” glass capacitive touchscreen display lets you easily view your route
- Get more situational awareness with alerts for school zones, speed changes, sharp curves and more
- View food, fuel and rest areas along your active route, and see upcoming cities and milestones
- View Tripadvisor traveler ratings for top-rated restaurants, hotels and attractions to help you make the most of road trips
- Directory of U.S. national parks simplifies navigation to entrances, visitor centers and landmarks within the parks
Indiana’s INDOT, for example, distinguishes project updates from traffic conditions and directs travelers to separate project and traffic map tools. Some projects offer email or SMS alerts. Its construction FAQs explain those Indiana-specific services and detour practices.
Compare routes on more than travel time
Use a route tool’s current estimates as one input, not as a guarantee or automatic instruction. Compare the options against the actual work-zone details and your vehicle’s needs.

- 【Map Updates】 This car GPS comes pre-installed with the complete 2026 North America maps and supports free lifetime updates. If you need maps for Europe or other regions, please contact us to download.
- 【Smart Voice Alerts】 This GPS navigation system provides clear turn-by-turn voice guidance, and also alerts you to speed limits and school zones, helping you drive more safely.
- 【Custom Truck Routing】 Supports multiple modes including Car, Truck, Bus, RV, Bicycle, and Pedestrian. In Truck/RV mode, the system automatically avoids low bridges, weight-restricted roads, and narrow lanes.
- Expected time and distance: Check the estimated time for the planned route and alternatives. A shorter distance may still take longer if it passes through a restriction or congestion.
- Work-zone location and timing: Determine whether the work is on your route, in your direction of travel, and scheduled during your departure window.
- Restriction type: Check whether lanes are narrowed or closed, traffic is shifted, or the road is fully closed. Confirm the dates and any published detour.
- Current conditions: Look for reported congestion, incidents or other closures that may affect either the main route or an alternative.
- Vehicle suitability: Check posted and agency restrictions for your vehicle, dimensions and load. Do not assume a consumer map’s fastest route accounts for every vehicle restriction.
Some services provide alternate routes, travel times and distances. Go511, which serves Southern California, says its directions feature provides a fastest route, alternatives, travel times, distances and turn-by-turn directions. That is a description of Go511, not a feature guarantee for every 511 service. Go511 also states that its traffic information is updated every minute; update intervals elsewhere may differ.
Follow the published detour, not an improvised shortcut
If a project has an official detour, follow the signed directions and the transportation agency’s published instructions. Do not assume a neighborhood street or county road is an appropriate substitute just because a map suggests it. Detour choices can reflect road capacity, vehicle size and local restrictions as well as distance.

INDOT states that, for Indiana construction projects, required detours or alternate routes are directed to other interstate highways, U.S. routes or state roads because of the traffic volumes and vehicle sizes involved. That rule describes Indiana’s approach; consult the responsible agency and follow signs in your own jurisdiction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Recheck before departure and handle updates safely
- Shortly before leaving, revisit the 511 service and project notice for changes to closures, incidents or work timing.
- If available, use the area’s voice 511 service for travel information while driving. The Federal Highway Administration identifies dynamic message signs, Highway Advisory Radio, 511 phone and websites, and social media as traveler-information channels; work-zone information still depends on agencies keeping records current and accurate.
- If you need to use a phone, pull over in a safe place before checking it. 511.org likewise advises checking conditions before departure, calling 511 for voice-activated information, or pulling over to check a smartphone.
- On the road, obey signs, flaggers and traffic control even if an app shows a different route or condition. If a closure or incident changes your plan, reassess only when it is safe to do so.
Official information can help you make a better-informed route choice, but it cannot eliminate uncertainty. The FHWA notes that maintaining work-zone information that is sufficiently current and accurate for travelers is a challenge.
