To make a clean wooden picture frame, cut two matching pairs of rails with accurate 45-degree miters, dry-fit all four corners, then glue and clamp the assembly before installing the picture package. The essentials are repeatable lengths, supported cuts and checking the fit before glue makes adjustments difficult.
Plan the frame and calculate the stock
Choose purchased frame molding for a ready-made profile, or mill a custom profile with router bits by varying the cutting depth and wood species. Before cutting, establish the outside dimensions of the picture or mat, the rabbet width that will hold the glazing and backing, and the visible frame width.

Jim Heavey’s worked example in WOOD Magazine’s “Making the Perfect Frame,” updated December 18, 2024, uses an 8 × 10-inch picture, 2⅜-inch-wide stock and a ⅜-inch rabbet. That leaves 2 inches of frame width for the calculation. The calculated stock length is 52¼ inches; Heavey allows additional material for saw kerfs and possible recutting, bringing the example’s working stock to 73¼ inches. Those figures belong to that example, not every frame: calculate for your own dimensions and leave an allowance suited to your setup and the chance of a recut.

Set up and check the miter saw before making the finished cuts. Heavey identifies the key to tight corners as “having a well-tuned saw, [and] clean cuts and assuring that opposite sides of the frame are exactly the same length.” A stop block helps make the opposite rails repeatable; a hardboard or MDF backer at the saw fence supports the molding and helps reduce tear-out.

- Rough-cut each rail about ¼ inch longer than its intended finished length, leaving room to tune the final cut.
- Cut the first rail, then use a stop block to cut its opposite rail to the same length.
- Reset the stop block for the other dimension and cut the second matching pair.
For a rectangular frame, the two longer rails must match each other, as must the shorter pair. Make clean cuts and keep the molding registered consistently against the saw and backer.
Dry-fit and inspect every corner
Bring the four rails together without glue and clamp them in position. A picture-frame band clamp applies pressure around the assembly. Check both the inside and outside edges of every miter; a corner can appear closed on one edge while showing a gap on the other. Also check that the rails remain aligned as pressure comes on, since pieces can shift when the clamp tightens. Correct fit and alignment now, before gluing.

Glue and clamp the frame
For a well-fitted miter, Heavey recommends PVA wood glue and moderate clamping pressure. Excessive pressure is not a substitute for a good fit and can make the pieces shift. Apply glue to the mating faces, assemble and clamp the frame evenly, then let it cure overnight before adding glass and the picture.

Fixing miter gaps
- Nearly imperceptible gap: It may be best left alone rather than risk damaging the corner with an unnecessary repair.
- Tiny visible gap: Heavey describes using a little glue with fine sanding dust to blend a small defect.
- Pronounced or repeated gaps: Recheck saw alignment and recut; filler will not correct a systematic angle or length error.
- Small heel-toe mismatch: A controlled shim at the fence can make a fine adjustment without changing the saw angle.
When to reinforce the corners
A standard glued miter joins end grain. Heavey considers a well-fitted, correctly glued and clamped PVA miter suitable for ordinary frames. For a large or very heavy frame, consider splines or pin nails for reinforcement, or use a half-lap or bridle joint. A mitered half-lap is an option when you want added joint structure while keeping the mitered appearance. These are choices based on frame size, load and desired look, not a ranking established by comparative tests.

- These are a 'must have' for any woodwork enthusiast.
- Ideal for use with square, round and irregular shaped work pieces , such as Box, Picture Frame, Barrel etc.
- They are designed for assembling picture frames, drawers, chair frames or other articles of various sizes and configurations prior to glueing or fixing.
- Tension is maintained by means of a handle which tightens the 4 metre long woven canvas strap linked to the tensioning unit.
- The corner braces can be removed if you want to use these on irregular shaped objects.
Install the picture package
Joining the frame corners and retaining the glass, picture and backing are separate tasks. After the glue has cured overnight, install the picture package and secure it with suitable frame-retention hardware. Heavey mentions a point driver and turn buttons for this job; they hold the contents in place rather than strengthen the miters. His article names Logan Dual Driver Elite and Rockler item 22890 as examples, but does not establish current availability or pricing.
