Roomba Error 34 is an internal communication error. Press the robot’s CLEAN or start button once to resume the mission. If the error returns, reboot the robot using the instructions for its model. If it still appears after a reboot, contact iRobot Customer Care; a factory reset is not the first step.
What Error 34 means
iRobot describes Error 34 as an internal communication error. Depending on the Roomba generation, you may see an app notification, hear a spoken prompt, or see a changed status light. The wording and buttons vary, so use the reboot instructions for your specific model rather than assuming every Roomba uses the same button combination. Error 34 does not, by itself, identify a failed component. iRobot’s guidance does not describe it as a brush, wheel, bin, or charging-contact error, so cleaning those parts is not the prescribed fix for this code.
Try these steps first
- Press CLEAN or the model’s start button once. Give the robot time to try restarting its cleaning mission.
- If Error 34 returns, identify the model and reboot it. Use the model-specific instructions below. Remove the robot from its dock where the instructions call for it.
- Wait for the reboot to finish. Look for the robot’s normal light activity, startup sound, or voice indication; allow up to about 90 seconds where applicable.
- Test the robot. Put it back on its Home Base or Clean Base if appropriate, then start a short cleaning mission on a clear, level floor.
- If the error persists, contact iRobot Customer Care. Do not keep repeating factory resets or open the robot to work on its electronics.
These are iRobot’s recommended first steps for the documented Error 34 models: restart the mission, reboot if needed, and contact support if the error remains (i Series instructions; j Series and Combo 10 Max instructions).

Reboot instructions by Roomba model
Check the model name in the iRobot app or on the robot before holding buttons. The reboot procedure differs across generations. iRobot’s full instructions are in its reboot guide.

Special procedure for certain 600 Series robots
Check for a green dot under the bin. If it is present, remove the battery, leave it out for about 30 seconds, reinstall it, and test the robot. If there is no green dot, use the HOME-and-SPOT reboot for about 10 seconds. Do not remove the battery on other models unless iRobot directs you to do so.

Rebooting is not the same as a factory reset
A normal reboot is the appropriate next step after Error 34 returns, and iRobot says rebooting does not delete maps, schedules, or other preferences (reboot guidance).

Treat a factory reset as a last resort, and use it only after recording your model and understanding what will be erased—preferably following iRobot’s instructions (factory reset guidance).

If Error 34 comes back after rebooting
Stop treating a recurring Error 34 as a routine cleaning or maintenance issue. iRobot directs owners to Customer Care if the error continues after rebooting. Have this information ready:
- The Roomba and its exact model or series.
- The serial number, and proof of purchase if you are asking about warranty service.
- The exact wording or number shown in the app or on the robot.
- When the error occurs: immediately at startup, after leaving the dock, or during cleaning.
- Any recent drop, liquid exposure, battery replacement, software update, or repair. These details may help support assess the situation; they do not establish a cause.
Repair options, warranty eligibility, and any service fees depend on the country, model, and warranty status. Contact iRobot to ask what applies to your robot.

Check the number if the message seems different
Roomba error codes are not interchangeable. For example, Error 14 or 1-4 concerns bin detection (iRobot’s bin-error guidance); charging errors 4 and 5 concern charging current (charging-error guidance). Copy the exact number and wording from the app or robot before following a troubleshooting procedure.

If the robot also will not charge or has no lights, that may require separate power troubleshooting rather than an Error 34 fix. Use the relevant iRobot instructions for charging and power problems, charging errors 4 and 5, or charging error 1.

When an update or battery change happened recently
A recent software update is useful context to report, but iRobot’s Error 34 remedy is still to restart the mission, reboot, and contact support if the code persists. Wi-Fi-connected robots generally receive updates while online and on the Home Base; iRobot says an update can take up to 24 hours to arrive and about 10 minutes to install (software update guidance).
If you recently installed a replacement battery, tell Customer Care. iRobot warns that aftermarket batteries can be associated with unknown charging errors, but that does not establish an aftermarket battery as the cause of Error 34 (charging-error guidance). Do not buy a battery or replace the robot just to address Error 34 unless support or a separate diagnosis indicates that it is appropriate.
